 June 23, 2011 - An enormous victory for free speech was won in the Netherlands (Holland) on June 22, 2011. Dutch politician Geert Wilders has been fighting charges of "inciting hatred" by speaking out against sharia law and other Islamic practices. Wilders' Freedom Party is the Netherlands' third largest political party in the nation's parliament. "The acquittal yesterday of Dutch anti-Islamic politician Geert Wilders on charges of inciting hatred," reports The Independent (UK), "has split the Netherlands down the middle as effectively as the populist MP's right-wing rhetoric." The report about the acquittal of Geert Wilders noted that the judge "ruled that some of Mr Wilders' comments may have been "crude and denigrating" but they did not amount to inciting hatred against Muslims and remained within the boundaries of free speech." “I am delighted with this ruling,” wrote Geert Wilders on his own website today. “It is a victory, not only for me but for all the Dutch people. Today is a victory for freedom of speech. The Dutch are still allowed to speak critically about islam, and resistance against islamisation is not a crime. I have spoken, I speak and I shall continue to speak.” Wilders's final remarks in his Amsterdam trial were powerful.  It would be reassuring if Muslim organizations were more unequivocal in their condemnation of acts of violence done in the name of Islam. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) includes in its statement condemning the killings at Fort Hood, the following warning: “Unfortunately, based on past experience, we also urge American Muslims, and those who may be perceived to be Muslim, to take appropriate precautions to protect themselves, their families and their religious institutions from possible backlash.” This statement is designed to create and establish among Muslims the feeling they are victims within America. It also is meant to provide the basis for understanding why some lunatic who is Muslim might have reason to “snap.” This is not much different than the view, still held by a large minority of Americans (Reverend Wright anyone?) that 9/11 was simply America’s chickens coming home to roost. This warning by CAIR is an irritant and does not belong in this press release. Hate crimes in America are virtually non-existent, relative to its size. The last year for which the FBI has detailed data is 2007. There were a total of 1477 hate crimes against religion, 1010 of which were “Anti-Jewish.” “Anti-Catholic” and Anti-Protestantant crimes totaled 129, “Anti-Muslim” crimes totaled 133, and all other religions combined totaled 241.
No deaths were attributed to the victim’s religion. There were 16,000 murders in America in 2008. Bias crimes exist, but they are a sideshow. To include them in a statement condemning the murders at Fort Hood is political propaganda. It would also be reassuring if CAIR’s statement were more specific in its condemnation. They state that “no political or religious ideology could ever justify or excuse such wanton and indiscriminate violence.” That’s not true. Not only can political and religious ideologies justify such violence, they do it all the time. Plus, why the generic “political or religious” passive sentence construction? Why not simply Islam itself condemns such violence? CAIR instead says the “American Muslim community condemns this cowardly attack.” [Emphasis added.] In today’s world, there are no accidents of language by sophisticated and well-funded organizations of any kind. Yes, paranoia can strike deep. But carefully constructed statements as obvious in what they exclude as what they include, do not help matters either.  A MAN accused of killing a pregnant Egyptian woman in a frenzied anti-Islamic attack goes on trial in Germany today in a case that inflamed tempers throughout the Muslim world. Prosecutors say the defendant, identified according to German legal practice only as Alex W, stabbed Marwa al-Sherbini at least 16 times in three minutes on July 1, in the same courthouse where his three-week trial will be held. Some 200 police officers will guard the proceedings this time in the eastern city of Dresden, as German media reported Internet death threats against the defendant, who will appear in court behind bulletproof glass. The 28-year-old Russian-born German allegedly plunged an 18cm kitchen knife into the chest, back and arm of Sherbini, 31, who was three months pregnant at the time with her second child. She bled to death at the scene in the presence of her three-year-old son Mustafa, in what prosecutors say in the charge sheet was a killing motivated by "a pronounced hatred of non-Europeans and Muslims''. Egyptian media quickly dubbed her "the veil martyr''. The accused is also charged with attempting to kill her husband, Elwy Okaz, who tried to come to her aid. Court psychiatric experts say they found no evidence of diminished responsibility. The Egyptian Government yesterday demanded the maximum sentence for Alex W, which is life in prison under German law - the penalty prosecutors are seeking. Sherbini's family will appear in Dresden as co-plaintiffs, represented by lawyers hired by Cairo, the foreign ministry said, adding that it was "confident in the German justice system's impartiality''. The shocking attack, and a slow reaction by the German media and political class, left the country open to accusations of neglectful handling of hate crimes against Muslims. Berlin moved to deflect criticism, with Chancellor Angela Merkel expressing her condolences to Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on the sidelines of the Group of Eight summit later that month. Thousands rallied in Dresden in Sherbini's memory. "Many people in and outside Germany are looking to Dresden and hoping to see this murder punished,'' said Nabil Yacoub of the Dresden Immigrants Council. The case triggered anti-German protests in Egypt and Iran and sparked fears of an escalation on the scale of the bloody riots touched off by the publication in Europe of caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed in 2005. Sherbini and Alex W met in August 2008, when she asked him to clear a playground swing where he sat smoking a cigarette so Mustafa could use it. He refused, calling Sherbini an "Islamist'', a "terrorist'' and a "whore''. She pressed charges for defamation and he was fined $US780 ($846). His appeal against the conviction brought them together again in July. After Sherbini testified and left the witness stand, he allegedly pulled the knife he had smuggled into the courtroom and stabbed her and then Okaz, who was shot in the leg by a confused guard who apparently took him for the attacker. Sherbini worked as a pharmacist while her husband was a geneticist working on his doctorate in Dresden. Alex W, who arrived in Germany from Perm in the Urals in 2003, was on the dole and reportedly struggled with bouts of depression. Yesterday, the Dresden Culture and Educational Centre, which now bears Sherbini's name, held a memorial in her honour calling for "respectful treatment of differing social groups''. Married girl’s murder in cold blood: Family shuttles between offices of RPO, CPO for justice * Victim’s mother appeals to CJP, Punjab CM for justice * Says they are called to police station in the dead of night and pressurized to reconcile with the accused By Imran Asghar RAWALPINDI: The family of a young girl killed in cold blood by her husband and mother-in-law has been shuttling between the offices of Regional Police Officer (RPO) Nasir Khan Durrani and City Police Officer (CPO) Rao Muhammad Iqbal for justice for over two months but of no avail.Blinking back his tears, Usman Ali, the brother of ill-fated Saba Sehar, 22, told Daily Times in a choked voice that his sister was married to Azhar Aziz, a resident of Adiala Road, last year. He said in February this year Azhar in assistance with his mother, Azizun Nisa, beat his sister in revenge for not giving the hand of their youngest sister to his younger brother. They beat Saba black and blue, and when she collapsed on the floor from torture and demanded water, Azhar poured acid in her mouth.Usman said that his family shifted Saba to Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Hospital (BBSH) where she succumbed to injuries on March 13. Suspended between life and death, the victim narrated the entire episode to the investigation officer of Saddar Bairooni police. The police registered a case under Section 302/34 against Azhar and his mother and sent the former to Adiala Jail on judicial remand. However, his mother being co-accused was not arrested despite registration of an FIR. In her death statement registered by the police, Saba said, “My mother-in-law grabbed me by hair, while my husband punched and kicked me, making me almost unconscious. When I fell down on the ground and was in a daze, I called for water. But my husband poured a glassful of acid in my mouth.”Usman said that the accused were politically influential and pressurizing his family through different tactics to make a compromise with them. Appeal to CJP: Saba’s octogenarian mother Razia Begum told Daily Times that they were often called to the police station in the dead of the night and pressurized to patch things up with the accused. With tears rolling down her cheeks, she passionately appealed to Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif to come to her rescue, as she was too old to shuttle between the offices of RPO and CPO and tolerate the pressuring tactics of police officials.“I just want that all those who tortured my beloved daughter to death be brought to justice.” She said a lot of their hard-earned money had gone down the drain visiting the offices of RPO and CPO but they won’t move beyond their verbal assurances of delivering them justice. “What if I died nursing a wish that my daughter’s killers were brought to justice?” Razia begum said that she could meet Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Operations, Yasin Farooq on one occasion only. “SSP Yasin marked our application and directed the investigation officer (IO) to arrest the accused but the IO is treating them as criminals,” she said. Police cliché: A police spokesperson told Daily Times that the police would ‘mobilize all their resources’ to arrest the co-accused. He said the CPO was busy in meetings that’s way the applicants could not be produced before him.He suggested that the applicants lodge their complaint with the CPO in an open court, which, he said, would be ‘fruitful’. John Searle, president of the Jewish Community Council of Victoria, the peak body of Victorian Jewry, said today: “Yesterday unknown persons desecrated a memorial in Caulfield Park with pro-Palestine graffiti. This memorial is dedicated to the citizens of Caulfield who died serving Australia in both World Wars.
What makes this act even more reprehensible is that it occurred in a week when a Jewish Australian soldier was killed by the Taliban in Afghanistan.
This young man died in the fight for democratic values and freedom from extremism, just like those whom the memorial honours. These are the very same values that Israel’s citizens embody in their struggle against Hamas, Hezbollah and their Iranian masters.
As the majority of Melbourne’s Jewish population is located in Caulfield, it is fair to assume that this graffiti was aimed at them. It is the latest in a series of intimidatory actions against Victorian Jewry presumably related to the current Middle East conflict. These include acts of physical and verbal aggression to persons and property, not against Israel, but against citizens of Australia.
As local Jews have no influence on Israeli policy – and nor should they – such actions cannot be seen as fair political protest or comment, but as hate crimes against Jews. Even more to the point, these vile acts are not only aimed at Victorian Jews; quite simply, they are a rejection of the ethics of the multicultural society in which we take such pride.
All fair-minded Australians must recognise this and raise their voices in protest. As for those cowards who violated this tribute to brave defenders of Australian values, they should hang their heads in shame.” Source: ICJS

A Molotov cocktail thrown early today against the wall of one of Chicago's oldest synagogues caused minimal physical damage but worried local Jewish officials, who said the incident could be a response to the latest fighting in the Middle East.
"I can't help but think there's a relationship," said Roger Rudich, president of Temple Sholom of Chicago, 3480 N. Lake Shore Drive.
No one was hurt in the arson that police are investigating as a hate crime. Bomb and arson detectives were at the scene Monday afternoon and the investigation was ongoing, said Chicago police officer Daniel O'Brien.
O'Brien said the fire "extinguished itself, nothing ever caught fire." No suspect was in custody as of Monday afternoon, he said.
"The offender drove off and made a derogatory statement" to a witness, and police were working to obtain and review surveillance equipment in the area, said O'Brien.
Rudich said the incident was not "terribly expensive or damaging," but "it's just so unsettling."
Rudich said the temple is always reviewing its security precautions and in light of this incident, "we'll look at everything again."
Local Jewish community officials said they were not aware of any recent incidents of violence in area temples but wondered if the incident was connected to a rise in problems in the Middle East.
Jay Tcath, senior vice president of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago, said it was not clear if the arson had a global cause.
"Though no suspects have been apprehended and it's premature to unequivocally connect what is happening with this incident, it's hard to avoid the likely connection," he said.
Lonnie Nasatir, regional director for the Anti-Defamation League, said the arson is cause for vigilance.
"We are hoping that it's just one incident and that there are not further copycat incidents," Nasatir said. "We don't know if it has any correlation with what is happening in Gaza. In the last year there have been other anti-Semitic acts that weren't attributed to anything except ant-Semitism."

From the way its been reported, one would have easily imagined that the weapons of mass destruction not found in Iraq had somehow made their way to Ohio to be unleashed on the mosque. Sensing a prime opportunity to play the victim card in their never ending campaign of propaganda, some Muslims charged that these “attacks” were the direct result of the explosive new documentary on radical Islam entitled Obsession, which very convincingly likens the jihadist agenda in western countries to Nazism. For the most part second generation immigrants- this crowd demanded to know why the media chose to ignore these outrageous ”hate crimes” against their community and why, for example, they are not accorded the same high profile status usually reserved for synagogue and church attacks. Its almost as if they believed that entire media apparatus should have suspended its round the clock coverage of the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression in order to cover these alleged crimes. The can of pepper spray found four days after someone sprayed a 10-year-old girl in the face at a local mosque was discovered inside the mosque, a Dayton police lieutenant said.
The girl said she was sprayed about 9:40 p.m. Sept. 26 through an open basement window of the Islamic Society of Greater Dayton, Lt. John Huber said.
The girl told police one of two men outside the basement window sprayed her with something from a white can with a red top as she watched children whose parents and relatives had gathered at the mosque to celebrate Ramadan.
A can of pepper spray was found Sept. 30 in another room in the basement inside a red and white-striped bag, Huber said. He said it was initially reported to him that the can was found near the mosque, but he later learned it was inside the mosque.
Police have interviewed a 10-year-old boy about the incident. The boy and his family are members of the mosque. Police are not ruling out that someone inside the mosque sprayed the girl, Huber said.
Chief Richard Biehl has said there is no evidence the girl was the victim of a hate crime.
She and another woman were taken to local hospitals after feeling nauseous, according to police.
A few of the 300 people celebrating the last 10 days of Ramadan with dinner and a prayer session were treated for eye irritation at the scene.
The bag and can are being checked for fingerprints by the FBI, Huber said. The FBI has also taken the girl's clothes to determine if there are any chemicals that match what was in the can. HAZMAT crews found no traces of chemicals in the mosque or on the girl.
The incident happened days after the DVD "Obsession: Radical Islam's War With the West," was circulated in a paid advertisement in the Dayton Daily News and other newspapers across the country.
Islamic Society of Greater Dayton President Dr. Tarek Sabagh said the DVD created an atmosphere of "fear" among Muslims, but said he was not sure it was related to the incident at his mosque.

Safia Z. Jilani A Muslim student who said a masked gunman assaulted her after he wrote anti-Muslim slurs in a women's restroom at Elmhurst College has been arrested for filing a false police report, officials said today. A week after the incident roiled the small college, Elmhurst Police Chief Steve Neubauer said officers had cited Safia Z. Jilani, 19, of Oak Brook, on a single count of filing a false police report. Filing a false police report is a Class 4 felony, punishable by one to three years in prison. The announcement -- made jointly by Elmhurst Police, the college and the DuPage County state's attorneys office -- concluded there was no merit to her complaint. "The totality of all the evidence, and interviews with staff and students at the college ... concluded that this incident never happened," Neubauer said in a phone interview. Jilani's report followed several weeks of tension on campus that began when some students allegedly called anti-Muslim slurs at students protesting the treatment of U.S. captives at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp. Mr. Ali Hussein was arrest and charged with "Aggravated Harassment in the 2nd Degree as a Hate Crime" at the scene and transported to the Hospital where it was determined that he has a fractured leg. He is still in the Hospital "Methodist" probably will be receiving a bedside arraignment. The 2nd person a Mr. Villarini has been identified as one of the people involved and has an outstanding warrant for "Criminal Possession of marijuana" he is "known" to the department. NEW YORK (AP) -- A former Pace University student who twice threw copies of the Koran into a toilet at the school after disputes with Muslims pleaded guilty Monday to disorderly conduct in connection with the incidents. Stanislav Shmulevich, 24, pleaded guilty as part of a deal in which he must do 300 hours of community service. He has completed about 80 hours of the service at a hospital, his lawyer said. Shmulevich, of Brooklyn, admitted he tossed the Muslim holy books into toilets at Pace on Oct. 13, 2006, and Nov. 21, 2006.
