Lawmakers ask IRS to investigate CAIR

A senator and five Congress members are urging the Internal Revenue Service to investigate the Council on American-Islamic Relations to determine whether the controversial Muslim group's lobbying activities on Capitol Hill violate its nonprofit status.

antiterrorism caucus, Reps. Sue Myrick, R-N.C., John Shadegg, R-Ariz., Trent Franks, R-Ariz., Paul Broun, R-Ga., and Patrick McHenry, R-N.C.

The Washington, D.C.-based CAIR – which had its relationship with the FBI cut off this year after being named an unindicted co-conspirator in the largest terror-finance case in U.S. history – has been under increased scrutiny since the release of "Muslim Mafia: Inside the Secret Underworld That's Conspiring to Islamize America," a WND Books publication by former Air Force special agent P. David Gaubatz and "Infiltration" author Paul Sperry.

The authors present firsthand evidence CAIR is acting as a front for a well-funded conspiracy of the Muslim Brotherhood – the parent of al-Qaida and Hamas – to infiltrate the U.S. and help pave the way for Saudi-style Islamic law to rule the nation.

The letter, also addressed to the House clerk, Senate secretary and Senate superintendent of records, points to evidence uncovered in "Muslim Mafia" that CAIR may be in violation of both the anti-excessive-lobbying provision of its 501(c)(3) nonprofit status and the Lobbying Disclosure Act of 1995 by failing to register with Congress as a federal lobbying organization.

As CAIR's own website states, the group's Governmental Affairs Department "conducts and organizes lobbying efforts on issues related to Islam and Muslims."

CAIR says its department is "active in monitoring legislation and government activities and then, responding on behalf of the American Muslim community. CAIR representatives have testified before Congress and have sponsored a number of activities designed to bring Muslim concerns to Capitol Hill."

As WND reported last month, Myrick, Shadegg, Franks and Broun formally asked the House sergeant at arms to investigate evidence from "Muslim Mafia" that CAIR is conspiring to plant "spies" inside Congress targeting sensitive security-related committees.

In another letter, to Attorney General Eric Holder, the House members ask the Justice Department to reveal to Congress members why CAIR was listed as an unindicted co-conspirator in the largest terror-finance case in U.S. history.

"Muslim Mafia" points out CAIR, as a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization, is severely restricted from lobbying and expressly prohibited from political campaigning.

Arizona Politicians Concerned By Minnesota Rep.'s Relationship with CAIR

U.S. Senator Jon Kyl and U.S. Representatives Trent Franks and John Shadegg expressed concern over Rep. Keith Ellison's relationship with the Hamas-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) in a recent letter to the Minnesota Congressman.

The letter was prompted by Rep. Ellison's recent attendance at CAIR-Arizona's 2009 Annual Banquet. In the letter the Arizona politicians said that they were "deeply concerned that any official support of this organization [CAIR] would undermine the legitimate concerns of federal investigators about CAIR's relationship to foreign terrorist organizations."

The "concerns" about CAIR that the Arizona delegation referenced in the letter were highly publicized during the trial of the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development (HLF). CAIR was listed as an unindicted co-conspirator in the case. Among the evidence, CAIR was listed on a memo as part of the Palestine Committee in the U.S. – the memo calls on members of the committee to "increase the financing and moral support for Hamas." As a result the FBI decided to cut off contacts with CAIR – citing questions surrounding CAIR's relationship to Hamas as its reason. Read more ...

Congressman suggests calling a terrorist a terrorist: 'I think it is a disservice to not speak with clarity about the enemies we confront'

An Arizona congressman says it is a problem when U.S. officials fail to speak clearly – for example calling a terrorist a terrorist – when discussing the dangers the nation faces in confronting enemies.

U.S. Rep. John Shadegg, R-Ariz., was interviewed by Greg Corombos of RadioAmerica.org on the issue of new marching orders in the Obama administration that words like "war on terror" and "enemy combatant" no longer be used.

Shadegg said those terms are specifically descriptive so that people can understand what's going on.

"I think it is a disservice to the people to somehow not speak with clarity about the enemies we confront," he said. "Clearly when Al-Qaida and other radical Islamists or Islamic extremists specifically express their desire to kill Americans, or wipe America off the face of the earth, let's be realistic in acknowledging that threat." Congressman Proposes Bill: No Gitmo Detainee May Set Foot on U.S. Soil

Rep. John Shadegg (R-Ariz.) has introduced a bill that would prevent any of the detainees in the soon-to-be-closed Guantanamo Bay prison from being allowed into the United States. Back on Jan. 22, President Barack Obama issued an executive order mandating the closure of the prison, known as Gitmo, within 12 months. Gitmo holds nearly 250 enemy combatants from the war on terrorism.

With the question in mind of where those prisoners will go, Rep. Shadegg introduced HR 1238, which would prevent anyone being held at Gitmo from setting foot on U.S. soil.

“No American family should ever have to worry about their own government placing a terrorist in their community,” Shadegg said in a statement about the bill. “I have introduced legislation that would make this impossible – ensuring that the Islamic extremists at Guantanamo are not given the chance to enter our country and complete their unfinished mission of shedding American blood.” Read more ...

"Beware of CAIR" say Members of Congress to their colleagues

Several members of the U.S. House of Representatives Anti-Terror Caucus have sent a Dear Colleague letter today emblazoned with the warning: "Beware of CAIR". The signatories include: Reps. Sue Myrick (R-NC), Pete Hoekstra (R-MI), John Shadegg (R-AZ), and Paul Broun (R-GA). Rep. Myrick is the author of the Wake Up America Agenda aimed at countering Militant Islamic infiltration of American institutions.

Why the warning message from these concerned Members of Congress about the Council of American Islamic Relations (CAIR)? Because CAIR is about to storm Capitol Hill on February 6th in an intense lobbying blitz to combat its designation as an unindicted co-conspirator in the successful Dallas federal court retrial and conviction of The Holy Land Foundation caught funneling millions in charitable contributions to the Palestinian terrorist group, Hamas. These House Members of the anti-Terror caucus want to get the message out to their colleagues and constituents that meeting with CAIR, given recent actions by the FBI distancing the agency staff, both national and regional from the Muslim Brotherhood Front, would be tantamount to sanctioning CAIR's terrorist commitments to Hamas.
