The news this week should horrify anyone: A woman in Iraq, 51-year-old Samira Ahmed Jassim, confessed to arranging for the rape of 80 women so that she could convince them – shame them – into becoming suicide bombers. Linked to the Ansar al-Sunnah radical Islamist group (weakly called an “insurgent” group in the Herald-Sun article linked above), Jassim admitted in a videotape confession to mentally preparing the women for “martyrdom” operations, passing them on to the terrorists who gave them their explosives, and then took the women – now bombers – to their targets.
Take a look at her photo. This woman, who looks much like anyone’s sweet old granny, used Islamic law and tradition as a way to recruit women who, one might guess, wouldn’t dream of “martyring” themselves for her own radical cause. Remind me not to go to her house for milk and cookies.
It’s hard for Westerners to understand why these women would have turned to suicide martyrdom after being raped. But unlike the West, men are not considered to be at fault when a rape occurs. According to the Mufti of Australia, Sheikh Taj al-Din al-Hilali, rape is “90% the woman’s responsibility” because “a woman owns the weapon of seduction.” Al-Hilali backed up his assertions with the writings of another Islamic scholar that place the blame on the woman: “If she had not left the meat uncovered, the cat wouldn’t have snatched it.” Read more ...
