 SOMALI pirates late yesterday attempted to storm the French navy's 18,000-tonne Indian Ocean fleet flagship after mistaking it for a cargo vessel. The crew of La Somme, a 160m command vessel and fuel tanker, easily saw off the brazen night-time assault by lightly armed fighters in two open-topped motorboats, and captured five of the pirates. "The pirates, who because of the darkness took the French warship for a commercial vessel, were on board two boats and opened fire with Kalashnikovs," Admiral Christophe Prazuck said last night. La Somme is the French command vessel in the Indian Ocean, overseeing French air, sea and land forces fighting Somali pirates and hunting terrorists under the banner of the US-led Operation Enduring Freedom. Officers on the ship have directed commando operations to free French hostages held by Somali pirates. The pirates tried to flee when they realised their mistake but were pursued by French forces, who caught one of the skiffs after an hour-long chase. On it they found five men but no weapons, water or food as the pirates had reportedly thrown all the boat's contents overboard. The world's naval powers have deployed dozens of warships to the lawless waters off Somalia over the past year to curb attacks by pirates in the busy maritime trade route. La Somme was operating 460km off the Somali coast, on its way to resupply fuel to frigates patrolling shipping lanes as part of the EU's Operation Atalanta anti-piracy mission. This was not the first time Somali pirates have mistakenly attacked a French naval vessel. Several pirates were captured in May when they tried to board a frigate in the area. Somalia has had no proper government since it plunged into lawlessness after Mohamed Siad Barre was overthrown in 1991.

Authorities say four militants were found dead after an explosion in the violence-plagued Ingushetia province in southern Russia.
The regional interior ministry said a makeshift bomb exploded early Sunday in a car in the Nazran district, killing the four passengers, including a member of a militant group previously convicted for illegal arms possession.
Ingushetia, which borders Chechnya to the west, has been roiled by shootings, bombings and other attacks targeting police and government officials.

GAZA, July 24 (KUNA) -- Two Hamas militants were Friday killed apparently while preparing for an attack against the Israelis but died when the explosive device they were handling exploded, the Palestinian movement's military wing said.
Izzuddin Al-Qassam Brigades said in a statement 23-year-old Osma Kamal Nabahin and 22-year-old Bakr Jamal Nabahin were killed while they were performing a "special jihadist" mission. It did not elaborate.
Palestinian security sources said the two were killed in a big explosion that occured east of Buraij camp.

KABUL, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Five suicide bombers were killed in Ghazni province of southern Afghanistan Saturday night as the explosive materials in their jackets went off prematurely, provincial police chief said Sunday.
"The incident took place in Waqhaz district in a house which had been destroyed, five suicide bombers including two Arabian were killed," Khial Baz Shirzai told Xinhua.
He added that the huge explosion did not damage other residential houses in the area.
Shirzai further said that another would-be suicide bomber was also detained by police in the Gilan district on Sunday.

Has it ever occurred to you, Mr. Ahmed, that maybe there are so many Muslims on the Terrorist Watch List because, uh, so many Muslims are terrorists?
And in any case, the Terrorist Watch List is not a matter of "victimization." I myself am on it -- or rather, Robert Spencer is on it. Every time I fly, which is just about every week, I have to go through delays while they check to see if I am that Robert Spencer. It would be annoying if I missed a flight because of it, but I know it this delay is going to happen, and factor it into my schedule. Protest? Whine? Nope. I am not going to do that, and Parvez Ahmed shouldn't either. Any American who doesn't want to see another 9/11 on American soil should be willing to put up with some inconvenience to that end.  GAZA CITY - The Hamas regime acquired U.S.-origin air defense systems but was unable to use them in combat.
Hamas sources said the Islamic military has acquired the Stinger man-portable air defense system. The sources said the Stingers were acquired from smugglers in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula in 2008 and deployed in the 22-day war against Israel in January 2009.
"We were disappointed by them, and they were found to have been useless," a Hamas source said.
The source said Hamas smuggled four Stinger systems in 2008. The source said the Hamas military deployed the Stingers against Israel Air Force AH-64 Apache attack helicopters during strike missions in the northern Gaza Strip.
"Our gunners couldn't fire the weapon," the source recalled. "A notice came up on the display saying 'friendly aircraft.'"
Industry sources said Raytheon, producer of Stinger, installed identification friend/foe capabilities more than a decade ago. The sources said this would prevent Stinger from being fired against any aircraft used by the U.S. military.
Another Hamas source said gunners deployed Stinger along with heavy machine guns in attacks on Israeli helicopters during the war in the Gaza Strip. The source said one Stinger surface-to-air missile was launched, but the projectile veered off course and struck a Hamas gunner squad.
"The Stinger was drawn by the heat of our guns rather than the engines of the Israeli helicopters," the source said. "At that point, we stopped using this weapon."
The sources said Hamas has abandoned plans to acquire additional Stingers. Instead, the Islamic army has been ordering the Russian-origin SA-16, or Igla-1, surface-to-air missile system, with a range of five kilometers. They have asked for $375,000 (U.S.) for her release. “The matter will be settled, but secretly,” Mr. Jan said. When contacted, one of the elders involved in negotiations asked that their identity not be revealed, and said they are not authorized to talk until a deal has been reached.
