Ramallah, 17 March (AKI) - Marwan Bargouti, one of the most prominent Palestinian leaders held in an Israeli prison, may run for president of the Palestinian Authority in elections scheduled for 2009.
"When the date for the presidential elections is established, I will make a decision and take an appropriate position," he said in an interview conducted by Adnkronos International (AKI) through his lawyer.
Barghouti, was the leader of the West Bank's Tanzim movement - a militant wing of Fatah - and is considered the new guard within the ruling Fatah movement.
He is very popular among the Palestinian population, as he enjoys a 24.3 percent approval rate, compared to the 23.1 percent rating of current president Mahmoud Abbas, according to a poll conducted in early March by the Palestinan Center for Policy and Survey Research (PSR). Read more ...
