In an interview with the New York Times this week (March 7), President Barack Obama said he “hopes U.S. troops can identify moderate elements of the Taliban and move them toward reconciliation.” The proposition came as a conclusion to a larger picture: the battlefield situation in Afghanistan. According to the New York Times he said the United States “was not winning the war in that country” and thus the door must be opened to a “reconciliation process in which the American military would reach out to moderate elements of the Taliban much as it did with Sunni militias in Iraq.” Read more ...
