Arab group exec quits after online tirade

The Canadian Arab Federation moved to distance itself from one of its own executives who resigned yesterday after he apparently posted "F--- Canada Day" on his Facebook page, called Canada a "genocidal state," and said he "couldn't be more ashamed to be Canadian."

The tirade on Omar Shaban's profile stirred up a firestorm of controversy and put CAF leaders in damage-control mode as they were quick to condemn the posting on the social networking site.

Just after 8:30 last night, Shaban, 23, resigned his post as the CAF's executive vice-president for Western Canada, CAF national president Khaled Mouammar confirmed.

"There was a big outcry from our member organizations and it was felt that he had to correct that," Mouammar said. "He decided that the best thing for him to do was to resign."

'Ashamed'

Shaban didn't return requests from the Sun for interviews and to verify that the comments on his personal Facebook status update were indeed his writings. But his Facebook page spoke volumes.

"It's finally Canada Day ... Couldn't be more ashamed to be Canadian," he wrote, apparently in reference to Canada's treatment of the native population. Read more ...

Palestinians can learn from Jews

During the past few weeks Canadians once more witnessed the mindset driving Arab and Palestinian politics.

The leadership of the Canadian Arab Federation (CAF), in hurling public abuse at senior political leaders in Ottawa dropped its cultivated mask of responsibly serving its community, to display the streak of political ugliness carefully hidden from view.

Then the spectacle of the Israeli Apartheid Week on various university and college campuses across Canada disclosed how greatly infected are the organizers -- Arab-Palestinian students and their supporters -- with anti-Semitism.

In abusing federally elected leaders the CAF leadership inexcusably insulted the people of Canada.

Moreover, the intemperate conduct of the CAF leader -- Khaled Mouammar is a Palestinian-Arab and Orthodox Christian -- was indicative of the problem exacerbating Palestinian suffering, despite receiving much political, diplomatic and financial support from around the world.

Palestinians are an abused people, but they are not the only ones in a world where there has been much abuse of people lacking power to fend for themselves. Jews were an abused people, and the abuse directed at them eventually became the Holocaust. Read more ...

Sympathizer of terror groups was immigration board member

It's well known that Khaled Mouammar wants Ottawa to remove Hamas and Hezbollah from a list of banned organizations and replace them with the Israel Defence Forces.

It's well known that the president of the Canadian Arab Federation recently called Jason Kenney, the Minister of Immigration, a "professional whore" for supporting Israel and criticizing the presence of Hamas and Hezbollah flags at a recent protest, prompting Mr. Kenney to say he would review the CAF's federal funding.

But it is less well known that Mr. Mouammar spent the 11 years prior to February, 2005, sitting as a member of the Immigration and Refugee Board, deciding whether refugee claimants from such North African countries as Morocco, Egypt, Algeria and Somalia should be allowed to stay in Canada.

No details are available on how many refugees Mr. Mouammar waved through the Canadian system, although one immigration lawyer who remembers him from his IRB days says he was known to have a "very high" acceptance rate. Board members typically have sole discretion over whether to admit a refugee claimant. Read more ...

Stop funding fundamentalism

The gloom of 9/11 still hung in the air one December evening in 2001 as I mingled with guests at the Canadian Arab Federation's (CAF) annual heritage day event. That December evening, the CAF honoured me with their highest award in recognition for my services to the Arab cause. The plaque that then-CAF president John Asfour presented to me still hangs prominently in my home.

Today, the CAF, a great Canadian institution built as a meeting place for Canadian Arabs of all political and racial hues, has been turned into a mouthpiece for Hamas and Hezbollah in Canada. The CAF used to support the peace process in the Middle East and held healthy debates on the pros and cons of the Oslo peace accord, but these days any backer of the two-state solution is automatically branded a traitor to the Muslim cause.

One need only listen to the words of the current CAF leadership to understand the abyss of mediocrity this federally and provincially funded organization has sunk into. Earlier this week, the current president of the CAF, Khaled Mouammar, called Immigration Minister Jason Kenney a "professional whore" because Mr. Kenney criticized the display and waving of Hamas and Hezbollah flags at a CAF-backed protest rally.
