Report: Hezbollah plans attacks on Israeli targets in Turkey

Intelligence agencies warn against terror attacks planned by Hezbollah against Israeli and American targets in Turkey, according to a report published on the Turkish news website "Haberturk".

According to the report, Hezbollah is looking to attack Israeli tourists, Israeli vessels and airplanes, as well as synagogues in Turkey.

Citizens are asked to take the necessary precautions. In addition, Turkish police warned its units in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir, saying Hezbollah might have already gathered intelligence ahead of a possible attack on Israeli and American institutions in the three major cities.

According to the website, the attacks are planned in retaliation for the assassination of Hezbollah commander Imad Mugniyah in February 2008, and are masterminded by a man identified as Abbas Hossein Zakr on behalf of Hezbollah.

Israeli security and diplomatic sources were briefed on the threats following a request made by Ynet, and have yet to comment on the reports.

A Hidden Grain of Truth that Should Resonate

The Los Angeles Times has an interesting feature on the late Hezbollah leader Imad Mughniyah and his rather mysterious death on Feb. 12 in Damascus.

Mughniyah, of course, was one of the true pioneers in the use of terrorist tactics by radical Islamists against the West. Among the interesting details the report has is that, on the night his car blew up, incinerating him inside, Mughniyah was on his way to meet Syrian president Bashar Assad.

But there was one Mughniyah quote buried deep in the story that I thought was perhaps the most important in looking at what Hezbollah, Iran and Syria are up to. This should particularly resonate for those looking at Hezbollah in Latin America.

In an interview that he gave just before his death, and which was published afterward, Mughniyah was quoted as saying the following:

"The Americans are making up stories about me and hold me responsible for a lot of attacks against them that happened around the world," he told Ibrahim al-Amine of Lebanon’s Al-Akhbar. "Sometimes they think of me as if I have the key to the universe. It is difficult for them to understand that I am part of an institution that patiently plans and designs its moves." Read more ...

Terror group claims Jerusalem attack (updated)

A LITTLE-KNOWN group calling itself the Imad Mughnieh unit of the Brigades of the Liberators of the Galilee claimed responsibility for a deadly attack in Jerusalem today in a phone call to AFP.

The same group claimed an attack in March on a Jewish seminary in Jerusalem that killed eight people, which they said was revenge for the killing of senior Lebanese Hezbollah commander Imad Mughnieh in Damascus.

The militia blamed Mughnieh's death on Israel and has vowed revenge.

Israel welcomed Mughnieh's death but denied any responsibility.

In today's attack a Palestinian man from east Jerusalem ploughed an earthmover into a bus and cars in central Jerusalem, killing three people and wounding dozens of others before he was shot dead by Israeli police.

Zahra Maladan represents a dramatic shift in the way we must fight to protect our citizens against enemies who are sworn to kill them by killing themselves. The traditional paradigm was that mothers who love their children want them to live in peace, marry and produce grandchildren. Women in general, and mothers in particular, were seen as a counterweight to male belligerence. Глава американской разведки Майк Макконнел также выразил предположение, что к убийству Имада Мугние может быть причастна "Хизбалла" или Сирия.

Вдова убитого считает, что ее мужа убили из-за слухов о том, что он якобы пытался отобрать контроль над группировкой "Хизбалла" у шейха Хасана Насраллы.

Руководство "Хизбаллы" настаивает на том, что к убийству Мугние причастен Израиль.

Советник по военным вопросам духовного лидера страны Хаминеи, генерал Яхия Рахим Сафави, на днях вновь обвинил "сионистов" в устранении Мугнийе, однако подчеркнул, что в операции в Дамаске "совместно действовали террористические силы Пентагона и разведслужбы одной из арабских стран". Назвать страну-предателя генерал отказался.

Напомним, что санкции на арест генерала "Хизбаллы" были поданы 42 странами мира, в том числе Кувейтом, Иорданией, Саудовской Аравией и Мавританией.

Ранее Сирия, которая расследует обстоятельства покушения, также заявляла о причастности к убийству Мугнийе одного из соседних государств, но ничем не подкрепила данный вывод. Стоит сказать, что Дамаск в тоже время воздержался и от голословных обвинений в адрес Израиля, сведя к минимуму комментарии чиновников вплоть до окончания расследования.

7 Die in Shooting at Jerusalem Seminary

JERUSALEM - A gunman infiltrated a Jewish seminary in Jerusalem and opened fire in a library Thursday night, killing at least seven people, officials said.

Rescue workers said at least 10 people were wounded. Government spokesman Daniel Seaman and police said there was only one gunman though initial reports said there were two.

In Gaza, the Islamic militant Hamas praised the attack but stopped short of claiming responsibility. Thousands poured into the streets to celebrate, firing rifles in the air. Read more ...

Turning a terrorist into a cult hero

In what the Jerusalem Post refers to as "an uncommon act of journalistic contrition," the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has issued a public apology "to anyone who was offended" by its reference of recently-killed terrorist mastermind Imad Mughniyeh as a "great national leader."

For once, a major Western media outlet did the right thing by admitting its complicity – perhaps unwitting collusion – in what is becoming a trend toward soft-soaping terrorists and their activities. But how could the BBC have come to this is in the first place? Read more ...

Muqtada Al-Sadr Declares Three Days Of Mourning For Mughniya; Source: Mughniya Trained Mahdi Army, Assassination Squads

The Sadrist Shi'ites in Iraq, led by Muqtada Al-Sadr, have declared a three-day mourning period for Imad Mughniya.

An Iraqi security source said that Mughniya had entered Iraq via Iran, and had trained some 500 members of the Mahdi Army, which belongs to the Sadrists.

He added that he had also trained a number of squads in planning and carrying out assassinations within Iraq.

The Targeted Killing of Imad Mugniyeh

If Imad Mugniyeh - the Hezbollah terrorist mastermind who was responsible for hundreds if not thousands of murders - was indeed successfully targeted for assassination, his untimely death should be cause for celebration. I say untimely, because if he had been killed years ago, many innocent lives would have been saved.

At the time of this writing, no one can be sure whether Imad Mugniyeh is really dead, whether if he is dead he was killed by a car bomb, and who is responsible for his killing. But his targeting makes the strongest case for the appropriateness of targeted killing of terrorists who are being harbored by states that support terrorism.

Mugniyeh has been indicted by the FBI for the murder of hundreds of Americans. Syria, where he made his home, was unwilling to turn him over to the United States for justice. He continued to engage in terrorism. Read more ...
