UAE buys four nuclear power plants

The United Arab Emirates will have four operational nuclear power plants by 2010.

In a bold move that will reshape Gulf energy policy for decades, the UAE has brought transparency, disclosure, and marketplace practices to the all-too-sensitive world of nuclear energy in the Middle East.

The UAE signed a series of agreements with South Korea by which the latter will build and maintain four nuclear stations at a cost of $20 billion. The deal was signed during a recent visit of the South Korean president to the UAE.

The Korean Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), one of the world's leading nuclear power organisations, is in charge of the plan. KEPCO already operates 20 nuclear power plants.

To supervise the peaceful nuclear programme, UAE President Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan has created the Emirates Nuclear Energy Commission (ENEC). Mohamed Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, crown prince of Abu Dhabi and deputy supreme commander of the armed forces, appointed the ENEC board of directors.

For some years, the UAE government has been seeking a way of meeting increased demand for electricity in the country. It is estimated that the consumption of energy in the UAE will double in the next decade. Therefore, a clean and renewable form of energy was needed to sustain the UAE's high rates of economic growth.

ENEC Chairman Mohamed Al-Hammadi says that the UAE has hired 57 nuclear experts of various nationalities to follow up operations and provide technical assistance for the four nuclear power plants. The UAE is relying on alternative sources of energy to boost economic growth, he adds.

With its entry into the field of nuclear power, the UAE has blasted a new trail in the region, offering an example for all countries in the use of peaceful nuclear energy. For years, the matter of nuclear energy has been taboo. It was approached often with hesitation and sometimes by deceit. Countries that needed nuclear energy refrained from developing it, while others pursued secret programmes that were viewed with suspicion.

In launching a peaceful nuclear programme and keeping it transparent, the UAE aims to serve as a model for others. The UAE will be importing nuclear fuel via the open market and also selling any fuel it may produce. It aims to be a net exporter of clean energy in the regional market.

According to the World Nuclear Association, demand on energy in Gulf Cooperation Council countries is increasing by 10 per cent every year. GCC countries currently produce nearly 23 gigawatts of energy, with a growth rate of 7.5 per cent. With the growing demand on energy for desalination purposes, Gulf countries have to explore alternative means of clean and renewable energy. In the UAE, as well as in other Gulf countries, nuclear power would be of great help in desalination projects.

The UAE is seeking to control its emissions of greenhouse gases.

As it embarks on ambitious development plans, especially in Abu Dhabi, the country needs to develop clean energy sources. Demand on energy is increasing as the population grows and industry becomes more sophisticated.

Electricity produced from nuclear power is 75 cheaper than that produced from gas.

Sunni Shia-phobe about islamized Iran's Policy

History Teaches How to Keep Iran From Going Nuclear

Tawfik Hamid

Iran's missile tests aim to demonstrate both Iran's military might and its readiness for any military threat.

The rogue nation's most recent tests, on Sept. 28, were upgraded versions of the medium-range Shahab-3 and Sajjil missiles. Both can carry warheads and have a range of 1,200 miles (2,000 kilometers), putting Israel, American military bases in the Middle East, and parts of Europe within striking distance.

It is vital to make the right decisions on how to deal with such a regime. History can teach us many lessons on how we should respond to tyrants.

One of the greatest lessons we must learn from history is that integrating the will or the desire to do evil with the ability to do it is catastrophic. The Nazi regime, for example, would not have been capable of carrying out the Holocaust if the free world had had the conscience to stand against it at an early stage to prevent it from getting sufficient power to harm others.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad clearly expressed his desire to erase Israel from the map, which would entail killing millions of innocent people. It would be a disaster if the free world failed to stop him from getting the power to do so.

It is shameful that neither the Mulla regime in Iran nor the other Islamic scholars in the Sunni Muslim world denounced his statements to erase Israel.

It is unwise not to believe the Iranian president's statements. If we are not going to believe the Iranian regime in this, then why should we believe it when it says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes!

It is also important to mention that the title of the military operation to test the missiles, Al-Rasoul Al-AaZam (The Greatest Prophet-Mohamed), used Islamic names that carry certain a symbolism. "Shahab" and "Siggil" were used in the traditional Islamic text to indicate destruction of others. Here are their meanings:

Quran 37:10 — Except such as snatch away something by stealth, and they (the devils) are pursued by "Shahab" — a flaming fire, of piercing ability (to destroy them).

Quran 105:4-5 — Which smote them with "Sajjil" — stone-hard blows of chastisement pre-ordained, that caused them to become like a field of grain that has been eaten down to stubble.

"Israel attacks Iran"

Israel
Iran
That, my friends, will be the headlines sometime in the next ten days.

Yes bunky, before Obama is sworn in as President of the United States Israel will wipe out Iran's nuclear facilities so that the blame can be put on outgoing President George W Bush and leave Obama free to pursue a new direction in the Middle East.

Whether this is done with or without the knowledge or support of the States I can't say, but according to all reports the Perspective research department has received this seems to be the most logical choice.

Israel and the States have to do something about Iranian nuclear ambitions sooner or later and this seems like the prefect opportunity.

Oh sure, the other Arab states will scream bloody murder, but don't kid yourself, deep down they will all breath a sigh of relief.

Israel has nuclear weapons but they are also rational, so nobody is too worried. But, a nuclear armed Iran is another matter entirely.

Just as Iraq could not be allowed to gain a nuclear capability, so too must Iran be stopped, and timing is everything.

Should be an interesting week so hang on to your hats, and remember, you heard it here first!

Iran installs advanced centrifuges in main atom plant

Iran has begun installing advanced centrifuges in its main uranium enrichment plant, accelerating activity that could give it the means to make atom bombs in future if it chooses, diplomats said on Thursday.

Iran says it is wants to produce nuclear fuel only for electricity so it can export more oil; but has been hit with three sets of United Nations sanctions for hiding the work until 2003, failing to prove to inspectors since then that it is wholly peaceful, and refusing to suspend the disputed program. Iran's Hidden Hand in Gaza

By Avigdor Haselkorn

The recent escalation of fighting between Israel and militants in the Gaza Strip must be viewed in a broader context that centers on Iran's effort to shield its nuclear weapons program from a possible Israeli military strike. Read more ...
