The consensus seems to be that perception plays as much a part in any reality as do the facts themselves.
Let me give you an example by first presenting the straight facts in a terrorism case that just concluded this week in Camden N.J.
Five Muslim immigrants accused of scheming to massacre U.S. soldiers at Fort Dix were convicted of murder conspiracy Monday in a case that tested the FBI's post-Sept. 11 strategy of infiltrating and breaking up terrorist plots in their earliest stages.O.K. there ya have it!
The five, who lived in and around Philadelphia for years, were found guilty of conspiring to kill U.S. military personnel.
But they were acquitted of attempted murder, after prosecutors acknowledged the men were probably months away from an attack and did not necessarily have a specific plan.
The government said after the arrests in 2007 that case underscored the dangers of terrorist plots hatched on U.S. soil.
Although investigators said the conspirators were inspired by Osama bin Laden, they were not accused of any ties to foreign terror groups.
The group's objective however, was to kill "as many American soldiers as possible," prosecutors alleged.
Meanwhile, defence lawyers argued that the alleged plot was all talk - that the men weren't seriously planning anything and that they were manipulated and goaded by two paid FBI informants.
Not too pretty but a fairly accurate description of what went down.
Where we have a problem, (And I'll get to the reason why in a moment) is that the immediate reaction from the general population is: "There go those damned Muslim's again!"
Well.......... no! It's not "Those damned Muslims again" but rather a small group of radicals who have declared war on not only the West, but any other Muslim who doesn't prescribe to their particular brand of Islam.
In other words, the nut cases.
So far I haven't told you anything new, but let's not get on a high horse or a "Holier than thou" attitude since this would be casting the first stone.
Every group, organization and religion has it's own fringe groups and we need look no further than the Oklahoma City bombings to see that home grown, white, Christians are capable of the same type of terrorism and insanity.
No folks, the problem does not lie with Islamic fundamentalists as much as it does with the mind-set and attitude of Muslims themselves.
Here's why!
"These criminals had the capacity and had done preparations to do serious and grievous harm to members of our military," Ralph Marra, the acting U.S. attorney for New Jersey, said after the verdict. And THERE, my friends, is the root cause of all the problems.
But, some Muslim leaders in New Jersey disputed that.
"I don't think they actually mean to do anything," said Mohamed Younes, president of the American Muslim Union. "I think they were acting stupid, like they thought the whole thing was a joke."
Instead of a fast and forceful condemnation of acts of terrorism, Islamic Apologists are quick to jump to the defense of these people.
This not only gives a false impression of the situation, but actually encourages others to take up the banner of whatever particular lunacy is the order of the day.
And more the pity, because until the apologists learn to keep there mouths shut the problem will be self-perpetuating.
