BEIRUT, June 8 (Xinhua) -- Lebanese Interior Minister Ziad Baroud announced Monday the official victory of the ruling majority in Lebanese parliamentary election, LBC TV reported.
The Western-backed ruling coalition won 71 seats out of the 128parliament seats in Sunday's election, while the Hezbollah-led opposition got 57 seats.
Sunni majority leader Saad Hariri said at dawn Monday that the victory in this elections is "a big day in the history of democratic Lebanon."
The 12-hour elections in Lebanon on Sunday took place amid strict security measures to prevent any violence, as army and police troops were deployed across the country to keep order despite some individual skirmishes in some areas.
Intensive competition between the two rival groups raised the turnout of votes to an average of 54 percent compared to 45 percent of the parliamentary election in 2005.
The major battles were in predominant Christian areas of Beirut,Maten, Kesrouan, Jbeil and Zahli.
