DELTA Airlines will issue travel credits to the passengers on the Detroit-bound flight that a suspected terrorist attempted to blow up on Christmas Day. "Out of concern for the passengers, Delta is in the process of proactively reaching out to customers on flight 253 from Amsterdam and offered credit for future travel,” A Delta spokeswoman said in a statement.
Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a 23- year-old Nigerian national with reported ties to al Qaeda, tried to detonate an explosive hidden in his clothing but was thwarted when the device failed to ignite.
A Dutch passenger on board threw himself on top of Abdulmutallab to extinguish the flames.
Flight 253 was carrying 278 passengers.
"We have also been in the process of contacting the passenger who assisted the crew in containing the situation to extend our gratitude and credit for future travel on Delta,” the spokeswoman said.
