Dutch MP Wilders refused entry to UK 'A threat to public order'

Dutch Right-wing politician and controversial anti-Islam campaigner Geert Wilders has been refused entry to the United Kingdom despite being invited to visit by a member of the House of Lords, the British parliament's upper chamber.

Mr Wilders, who was due to go to London this Thursday, received a letter today, 10 February, from the British ambassador to the Netherlands telling him that he was not welcome, reportedly because his visit would constitute a threat to public order.

Mr Wilders responded to the decision in fighting mood, telling Dutch media that he still intended to travel to London: "I'll see what happens at the border. Let them put me in handcuffs."

Dutch Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen's response was also firm. He contacted his UK counterpart, David Miliband, by telephone and voiced his dissatisfaction that a member of the Dutch parliament - Geert Wilders is in fact also the leader of a political grouping, the Freedom Party - has been prohibited from entering a fellow European Union member state.

Geert Wilders, perhaps best known outside the Netherlands for having made the video Fitna, in which the religion Islam and its holy book the Qu'ran are attacked as providing a basis for terrorist attacks and for the undermining of western democracy and values, had been invited to London for a showing of this film to members of the British parliament.

The invitation to do so was extended to the controversial Dutch politician by a member of the unelected House of Lords.

Mr Verhagen commented regarding the showing of Fitna in the British parliament that this was a matter for the House of Lords to decide on, but added: "the fact that a Dutch parliamentarian is refused entry to another EU country is highly regrettable."

Geert Wilders was initially to have shown his video to the British parliament in January, but those plans were cancelled following fierce protests from the UK's Muslim community.

False papers are essential to terrorism

A search officer, working his way through Abu Hamza’s mosque in Finsbury Park, North London, in January 2003, pushed up a polystyrene ceiling tile and dislodged a cache of documents.

Forged French and Belgian identity cards, driving licences, credit cards and chequebooks fell on his head. So too did five blank Portuguese passports.

False identity papers, especially passports, are essential to the successful functioning of international terrorism. They enable wanted men to stay on the run for years and allow terrorists to evade security watchlists and attend training camps, conduct reconaissance or plan attacks.

Kamel Bourgass, the Algerian who murdered a police officer in Manchester, had gone there to collect a false passport. He is now serving a life sentence in prison, although no one is quite sure of his true identity.


A leading al-Qaeda operative, recently released from jail and identifiable only as U, was first arrested in 2001 as he tried to flee Britain in possession of a false Saudi Arabian passport.
Dhiren Barot, who rose higher in the al-Qaeda hierarchy than any other Briton, crisscrossed the globe on his missions using false passports and identities.

The ease with which terrorists could travel – and the fact that several of the 9/11 hijackers used false documents to enter the United States – was the driving force behind the development of biometric passport technology.

Authorities around the world were also alert to the use of fake identities in organised crime, from immigration rackets to international fraud. The US led the way with e-passports and insisted that the rest of the world follow. Britain, keenly aware of the close political and business relationships it enjoys with America, has been enthusiastic. The technology is also to be used in the Government’s controversial (and increasingly expensive) ID card scheme.

If, however, the secrets of cloning and altering the microchips that are supposed to be the security cornerstone of e-passports have been cracked, there is a danger that the billions of pounds invested in the technology will be wasted.

That can be avoided if the 45 countries using e-passports sign up to a comprehensive sharing system of international key codes that will mark the documents as genuine. As we stand, only five countries use the full system and Britain is not one of them.

American counter-terrorism chiefs are demanding a full explanation from Britain of how radical cleric Abu Hamza was able to smuggle murderous messages from his UK prison cell to Al Qaeda's deputy leader.

The major diplomatic row comes in the wake of a long-running battle by US prosecutors to extradite the former imam of London's Finsbury Park mosque to stand trial in America.

Hook-handed Hamza was jailed for seven years in Britain in 2006 for inciting murder and racial hatred and is held at Belmarsh prison, South-East London, supposedly one of Britain's most secure jails.

But according to senior American intelligence sources, Hamza evaded the extensive security measures surrounding him to send a series of questions to Ayman al-Zawahiri, Osama Bin Laden's right-hand man.

Al-Zawahiri is believed to be hiding with Bin Laden in the lawless mountain region along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

Late last year, Al-Zawahiri - who has a £13million bounty on his head - posted a message on an extremist website run by Al Qaeda saying he would answer questions on any topic.

US intelligence tracked all the email replies and among them were messages from Abu Hamza. It is understood they were sent from an email address known to be linked to the cleric.

The sources say they have no doubt that al-Zawahiri was personally involved in answering the questions and that those posed by Hamza had genuinely originated from him. Read more ...

Radical cleric to be extradited to U.S.

LONDON, England (CNN) -- Britain's Home Office has signed an extradition order that will send accused terrorist Abu Hamza al-Masri to the United States for prosecution, CNN has confirmed.

Al-Masri, a one-eyed, hook-handed preacher, already is imprisoned in Britain for inciting racial hatred at his North London mosque.

His legal team has 14 days to appeal the decision. If he does not appeal, he could be handed over to U.S. authorities within 28 days.

A Home Office representative said it is likely Al-Masri will appeal the decision, but they have heard nothing from his lawyers.

Al-Masri, who lost both hands and one eye working in Afghanistan, is the highest-profile radical Islamic figure in Britain. Read more ...

Radical cleric faces extradition to US

LONDON: Radical Muslim cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri, who faces charges related to a hostage-taking in Yemen in 1998 during which an Australian tourist was killed, could be extradited to the US.

A British court ruled last night that Hamza, who has one eye and a hook for a righthand, could be extradited to face terrorism charges including trying to set up an al-Qa'ida training camp in Oregon.

Egyptian-born Hamza, 49, serving a seven-year jail term in Britain for inciting his followers to murder non-believers, is wanted by US authorities on 11 charges.

Hamza, who applauded the attacks on New York and Washington of September 11, 2001, faces charges that he was involved in plotting the taking of 16 Western hostages in Yemen in 1998.

Four of the hostages, Australian tourist Andrew Thirsk and three Britons, were killed when the terrorists used the hostages as human shields during a gunfight that broke out after Yemeni forces launched a rescue attempt.

The US indictment accuses Hamza of attempting to set up a terrorist training camp in Bly, Oregon, from 1999 to early 2000, and supporting al-Qa'ida and the Taliban.

If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of up to 100 years in prison.

London's City of Westminster Magistrates Court approved the extradition, but that decision has to be ratified by Britain's Home Secretary.
