US Congress frets over anti-Americanism on TV in Mideast

The US House of Representatives Tuesday adopted a bill asking the US president to report to Congress on incitement to anti-American violence on television networks in the Middle East.

Lawmakers adopted the measure in a decisive 395-3 vote.

The bill asks the US president to report, six months after the text has passed, "on anti-American incitement to violence in the Middle East, and for other purposes."

"For years, media outlets in the Middle East have repeatedly published or broadcast incitements to violence against the United States and Americans," the bill read.

"Given the dangers such incitement poses to American soldiers and civilians in the ... region and at home, it is long past time for the US and other responsible nations to stop this growing threat," said Republican Gus Bilirakis, author of the bill.

It calls for punitive measures for networks deemed to be fueling terror. Among the networks mentioned are al-Aqsa, Hamas' television station, which broadcasts from Gaza, and Hezbollah's al-Manar.

The US Senate has yet to weigh in on the issue.

Exporting Pakistan's Anti-America Movement

Jamaat-e-Islami, the largest Islamist organization in Pakistan, wants the United States out of its country, so much so that the group created a movement based upon this. The movement is far reaching, and unfortunately for America, it stretches to the U.S. itself.

When the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) hit Pakistani shores in 1941, it came with a price. The group had only been around for little over a decade, and already it had established itself as a legitimate threat to governments all over the Middle East. Now, South Asia had to deal with it.

Today, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) continues to cause trouble in the region, aligning itself with extremist elements in al-Qaeda, the Taliban and many other violent factions. It even has its own militant wing, Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM), which has committed numerous terrorist attacks against Indian civilians. The group’s former militant wing, al-Badr, was involved in the 1971 Bangladesh massacre, which reportedly took the lives of up to 3,000,000 mostly unarmed citizens.

Like most Islamist groups in South Asia, JI likes to hold angry demonstrations, what it calls “political rallies.” The events are usually aimed at at least one of two entities, the sitting government of that particular JI locale (Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, etc.) and/or the United States. The Blood Libels at National Geographic Magazine: The Planet-Friendly Purveyor of Anti-Christian, Anti-American, and Anti-Israeli Biases.

Menacing anti-Israel demonstrations in the street, rabid anti-Israel resolutions at the United Nations, obsessive anti-Israel boycott resolutions among western academics, relentless anti-Israel headlines in the world media are “politics as usual,” involving the young and the fanatic. Most civilians barely notice it. They are worried about employment, health insurance, college tuition for their children—or about celebrities, whose decadent rise and fall distracts them from their own more ordinary miseries.

What worries me more are the movies and plays that subtly and inexorably shift the civilian point of view, movies which glamorize Arab tyrants and terrorists and demonize Israeli soldiers, “settlers” and politicians. Gradually, almost imperceptibly, ordinary people have come to believe that the Muslim world is peaceful, friendly, safe; that its “rough edges” are due to it’s having formerly been oppressed by Europe; that Islamist terrorism has probably been caused by the United States’ invasion of Afghanistan, Iraq, and Pakistan; that much of this is Israel’s fault—or rather, that much of this may now be solved if only America sacrifices Israel for the sake of world peace, including its own survival.

Take the pre-eminent, planet-friendly magazine, National Geographic. It boasts a readership of nearly eight million people. Courtesy of a gift subscription, it arrives faithfully. Sometimes I look at it, often I don’t. So many glossy photos, so little time. But this issue immediately caught my eye because the cover story is titled: “The Christian Exodus from the Holy Land.” What ho! I thought. So, the animal-friendly magazine “gets” it. My hopes raised, I turned to the article which is also titled “The Forgotten Faithful: Arab Christians.” Read more ...

Russian Muslim Leader Declares Anti-US Jihad

Talgat Tadzhuddin, one of Russia's two competing chief muftis, has once again declared jihad against the US, this time because of its support for Georgia, according to a September 8, 2008 report by the online news web site Gazeta.ru. "The USA are fiends of hell who impose spiritual assimilation on anybody who strikes back against their filthy hands," the mufti is quoted as saying, further characterizing the West as "enemies of the human race." An August 29, 2008 BBC Russian service report carries an additional quote: "We [Muslims] should help Russia in its jihad against the USA. Muslims have experienced their aggression more than anybody else. And now in alliance with Moscow we have a chance to pay them back for all of the suffering that the Americans have inflicted on the Islamic world. We call upon Muslims and Russian Orthodox to join in a united Islamic-Orthodox jihad against the Empire of Satan."

Muslim and Orthodox commentators have reacted by criticizing the mufti's statement. In 2003, Mufti Tadzhuddin called for a jihad against the US in reaction to the war in Iraq, but he then kept silent on the topic, reportedly at the insistence of the government.
