Pakistan's drug problem

It is perhaps the bright colours, the vibrant clothes that make the pictures even more shocking. Or perhaps it is the images of lives disrupted, lives destroyed.

I'm being shown a series of pictures of life on the streets in Pakistan. This isn't for the tourist brochures or company report - this gives a graphic reality to the country's growing drug problem.

It is hard to know which of the images is the most painful to look at.

It could be the one of the "street doctor" who is paid to find a vein by the junkies, about to earn his next payment from the emaciated but desperate man standing above him.

Or maybe it is the group of people, openly injecting themselves, oblivious to anything but their burning need for the next high. Or it could be the body of the man, ignored, abandoned and decaying.

It estimated there are half a million people who inject heroin in Pakistan, and maybe five million drug users in total.

Iftikhar Ahmed was once a drug addict, injecting heroin to get high. The 26-year-old was confronted by his father, who told him of the disgrace he was bringing on his family.

"Every time he left the house, he returned hanging his head in shame. He was always being asked about me and now he no longer wishes to go out," Iftikhar said.

Iftikhar earned enough as a tailor to finance his habit, and when money ran short, he sold possessions like his video camera.

"After the high had worn off, I would wake up and realise what I'd done, but it didn't stop me," he said.

Until one day on the streets, he was approached by an outreach worker from the country's biggest rehabilitation programme, Nai Zindagi, or New Life.

And now in the warmth of the late winter sun, in the hills around Barakoh, he is preparing the ground for his vegetables.

He's been here 15 days. He's clean and looking to going some way to restoring the family honour: "I have nothing in my life but regrets. I never took a stand. I spent my whole life high. I wasted myself, I wasted time.

"But I don't regret this as much as I regret bringing shame to my family. God willing, I'll pay them back. Nai Zindagi picked me up off the street. We were worse than stray dogs. I'm very grateful to them for lifting me up from the ground to the sky. Now I'll live this new life in their name," Iftikhar said.

The farm programme where he works is a key plank in Nai Zindagi's operation.

Financed by their own fund raising efforts, some state backing and the support of foreign governments like the Dutch, every day it helps around 22,000 addicts across Pakistan.

It gives clean needles to addicts to stop the spread of HIV, it gives advice on health issues, treats wounds and abscesses, and gives addicts the chance of getting clean.

First they travel to a detoxification centre, and when they are done, many of the lucky ones are given the chance to work on the farms.

Money raised here is poured back into the system. The addicts are shown how to grow vegetables, tend their crops and increase their yield. They must stay two months; they can stay up to three.

When they leave, they are given the chance to run their own little patch of ground and sell anything they grow.

Kaleem Amir helps the addicts when they arrive. As a former addict, he knows what they are going through. He was picked up by the outreach workers in Lahore and went through rehabilitation and four years later he is clean and now helping the charity that helped him.

Raped girl killed over family 'honour'

A 41-YEAR-OLD Jordanian man was charged with premeditated murder after his raped teenage niece was shot dead on Tuesday to "cleanse" the family's honour, police said.

"The man was arrested and charged after he shot the 16-year-old girl eight times in different parts of her body," in the Nasser area east of Amman, a police source said.

"The suspect, who was arrested while carrying his gun, confessed to the crime, saying that he wanted to cleanse his family's honour after his niece was raped last year. She gave birth to a baby boy two months ago and her family kept the child."

Murder is punishable by the death penalty in Jordan, but in the case of so-called "honour killings'', a court usually commutes or reduces sentences, particularly if the victim's family urges leniency.

Between 15 and 20 women are murdered each year in Jordan in the name of honour, despite government efforts to fight such crimes.

Fathima Rifqa Bary emerge in Florida

Ieri Pomeriggio, il mio Salotto è stato riempito di Luci e Telecamere, e da due Uomini della ABC molto cortesi.

Abbiamo registrato un’Intervista per Good Morning America che appare oggi e che è registrata sul loro Sito: website. Abbiamo parlato dei Delitti d’Onore e della Situazione critica di Fathima Rifqa Bary, l’Adolescente islamica dell’Ohio che si è convertita alla Cristianità e che è fuggita di Casa perché sa che suo Padre vuole ucciderla.

L’Intervista alla 17enne Rifqa è struggente. Sa che se un Islamico lascia l’Islam, si converte ad un’altra Religione, è un “Apostata”, e che è previsto venga ucciso da altri Islamici; Ciò include i Membri della sua stessa Famiglia.

Se Qualcuno che viene da una Casa fondamentalista ebraica o cristiana si converte, può essere Oggetto di Ostracismo, o può essere trattato come fosse morto, ma non viene fisicamente ucciso.Piangendo, l’Adolescente - dallo Sri Lanka - molto spaventata sa che la maggior Parte dei Giornalisti occidentali (e della Polizia che l’ha a sua Volta messa nelle Mani dello Stato che l’ha obbligata a sostenere un Processo pubblico), non crede che Ciò possa essere vero. Quanto Presto hanno dimenticato la Sofferenza di Salman Rushdie. Quanto Presto Chiunque sia cullato a vedere la Religione fondamentalista islamica proprio come una qualsiasi altra Religione, pensa che l’Islam che avanza sia ancora la Cultura “tenera”, cosmopolita, ospitale che è occasionalmente stata in Passato, in alcune Città e nei Confronti di alcune Persone danarose.

Nel 1989, le Autorità di St. Louis del Missouri, hanno pure scelto di permettere che una Isa Palestina picchiata e contusa, che si era rivolta a loro per chiedere Aiuto, rimanesse alla crudele Mercé della sua propria Famiglia, che l’aveva picchiata. Palestina aveva sedici Anni e suo Padre era, piuttosto letteralmente, un Terrorista palestinese. L’Operatore sociale che ha svolto una Visita a Casa è stato d’Accordo che sarebbe stato Difficile controllare i Bambini ma che doveva essere fatto uno Sforzo per Ciò. Palestina è stata tenuta al Suolo da sua Madre, mentre suo Padre ha continuano a pugnalarla viziosamente. Il Crimine commesso da Palestina? Aveva un Amico afro-americano, che era un Ragazzo, e sua Madre, le sue Sorelle, e suo Padre, Tutti hanno l’hanno percepita come una ”Puttana” perché stava diventando troppo “occidentale”.

Ora, vent’Anni dopo, Rifqa Bary sta cercando di farci capire Qualcosa che noi ancora manchiamo di comprendere, e che non vogliamo credere che sia vero. Alla Telecamera, Rifqa continua a dire: “Voi, Gente, non capite, la mia Vita è a Rischio, questa è Realtà, questa è la Verità, loro devono uccidermi se amano Dio più di quanto amino me”. Qui è quello che può succederle: Rifqa potrebbe essere “obbligata” a tornare all’Islam. La sua Famiglia potrebbe metterla agli Arresti domiciliari, e portarle i Mullah per ragionare con lei o per lavarle il Cervello; sua Madre potrebbe pregarla di placarsi cosicché la Famiglia possa rimanere unita come Prima. Se tutto il Resto fallisce, Rifqa può essere rispedita in Sri Lanka oppure uccisa oppure essere confinata in un Manicomio. Può essere uccisa Qui. Cosa assolutamente non può accadere è che la sua Famiglia religiosa islamica le stia vicina, dal Momento in cui lei segue un’altra Via religiosa molto pubblicamente.

Non ho tutti i Fatti a mia Disposizione. Ciononostante è possibile che il Padre di Rifqa possa genuinamente vederla come Malata mentale (perché solo una Ragazza “pazza” farebbe una Cosa tanto blasfema) e poiché lui la ama, abbia deciso di non abbandonarla, ma di cercare di raggiungerla, per aiutarla … facendole ritornare il Senno e perciò facendola tornare all’Islam.Naturalmente, queste sono le Supposizioni di Rifqa, e quale sia la Verità in questo Caso rimane inesplorato.

E, a Proposito: il Pianto e il Terrore di Rifqa possono essere probabilmente stati montati per l’Intervista, lei è leggermente “Isterica”, e sembra in qualche Modo auto-ipnotizzata. Eppure, quel che dice ha perfettamente Senso. È piuttosto in Contatto con la Realtà.Cosa possiamo offrire a qualcuno come Rifqa in America? Come Sempre, non c’è alcuna Protezione in America per le probabili Vittime di un Delitto d’Onore. Fino ad Ora, nessun Prosecutore ha accusato qualche Omicida di aver commesso un Delitto d’Onore in America.

Persino se lasciamo la Religione, la Cultura e l’Etnicità fuori dall’Equazione, (per far Piacere ad ogni Sorta di Correttezza politica), un Delitto d’Onore non è come la Violenza domestica di Stile occidentale, [ma] è una Collaborazione e Cospirazione familiare per redimere l’Onore familiare perduto, tramite l’Assassinio di una Figlia, di una Moglie, di una Sorella, o di una Cugina femmina. Solo il suo Sangue può “pulire” la loro Vergogna pubblica. L’Omicida e i suoi Complici sono visti [dalla loro Comunità etnica, culturale e religiosa] come Valorosi, non vengono demonizzati o visti come Criminali sociopatici. Vengono raramente proseguiti nei Paesi del Terzo Mondo. Pure gli Uomini possono essere uccisi per Onore, se sono visti maritare o avere una Relazione con una Donna, la cui Famiglia vede sé stessa come appartenente ad una Classe sociale superiore e appartiene ad un’altra Religione.

Spero e prego che Rifqa Bary non sia tornata dai suoi Genitori. Persino così, la sua Vita sarà molto difficile. È una giovane Immigrata, con attualmente nessuna Capacità rimarchevole, che non potrà mai più reclamare una Famiglia d’Origine allargata. Potrebbe dover vivere nascosta per il Resto della sua Vita. Ma, avrà la sua Religione, e finché rimarrà una fervente Religiosa, potrà avere una Comunità basata sulla Fede.

E, rimarrà Viva. Nient’altro che Questo, ma almeno Questo.

I Genitori islamici si sono “avvocatizzati”, e tramite il loro Legale, Craig McCarthy, insistono di non aver mai minacciato la Vita della loro Figlia, e che infatti sono i Pastori Blake e Beverly Lorenz che devono essere biasimati per le Paure della loro Figlia Rifqa. Comunque, Rifqa ha cercato i Lorenz da Sola, molti Anni dopo che si era segretamente convertita al Cristianesimo.

Afghanistan: Mother, brother cut fetus out of rape victim to protect family's "honor"

An Afghan teenager is in a serious condition in hospital after her mother and brother allegedly sliced open her belly to remove a five-month-old foetus from a rape, officials said.

The girl's relatives, who are farmers, had apparently decided to remove the unborn child to protect the family's honour, a local Governor told AFP.

Rape and pregnancy outside marriage are seen as a disgrace in the conservative society.

Bamiyan Governor Habiba Sarabi said the girl had not told her family she was pregnant.

"When the family realised two days ago, the mother and brother of the girl tied up her hands and legs and took her to a stable where they sliced open her belly with a blade and took the foetus away," she said.

They then sewed up the wound with a large needle of the sort used to seal flour sacks, Ms Sarabi said.

It became infected and started bleeding and the girl fainted, prompting the family to take her to hospital.

"She is not in good health now," she added.

Authorities had arrested the alleged rapist and were investigating, Ms Sarabi said.

Provincial health director Nadir Ali confirmed the girl was in hospital.

"Her wound is badly infected and we are trying to control that first. We don't know how bad are her internal wounds," Dr Ali said.

The nature of the wound showed the procedure was not carried out by health workers, but further investigation was needed to establish what had happened to the girl, he said.
