The battle between Israel and Hamas in Gaza certainly is an emotional one for all sides. People are dying and, regardless of your view, that is a tragedy. But deference to such dire events is no excuse for letting advocates make outrageous claims without challenge.

The BBC should have figured this out by now, but it is drawing criticism for an appearance on an Arabic language program last week by Kamal El-Helbawy, a Muslim Brotherhood figure and founder of the Muslim Association of Britain. As the Telegraph reported, Helbawy said Israeli children were fair targets for attack because they are "future soldiers."

He also repeated a meme that Israeli children are taught math through examples involving the killing of Arabs:

"In elementary school they pose the following math problem - 'In your village, there are 100 Arabs. If you killed 40, how many Arabs would be left for you to kill?' This is taught in the Israeli curriculum."

Critics say Helbawy's words could incite attacks. "That goes in people's ears and spreads like wildfire and the listeners think it's OK to go and murder Israelis," Palestine Media Watch Director Itamar Marcus told the newspaper.

Helbawy calls himself a moderate. But he has a history of slurring Jews and Christians and advocating conflict. Officials barred him from coming to the U.S. in 2006.

Muslim Brotherhood promises a "strong reaction" in response to "offensive" pig painting

The Muslim Association of Britain, a Muslim Brotherhood front-group, has warned a Nottting Hill art gallery to expect "a strong reaction from Muslims" for exhibiting painting which appears to show a Muslim woman cradling a pig.

Mokhtar Badri, MAB's vice-president told The Telegraph: “Although we condemn violence, Muslims have a right to express their disgust at this work” adding that the artist "clearly wants to provoke a strong reaction from Muslims and that is what she will get.”

Badri added that members of MAB planned to visited the SaLon gallery and demand that the painting by Sarah Maple is withdrawn from the exhibition. He said, “Muslims believe that all of God’s creatures should be treated with respect, but we are taught to keep our distance from pigs because they are unclean. That is why this picture is so offensive to us.”

But despite MAB's rhetoric, it is clear that not all Muslims find Maple's art to be "offensive". Indeed, the director of the SaLon gallery, Samir Ceric, is himself Muslim. He has said that he fled his homeland of Bosnia in 1992 during the country's civil war.

Sarah Maple was also brought up as a Muslim by her British father and her Kenyan-born mother. She has previously rejected accusations that her art deliberately insults the Islamic faith. Speaking to an art magazine recently, she said:

"I don’t think that I am criticizing the religion itself. I’m questioning the way some Muslims interpret the faith. I’m not saying we should all go and break the rules. I’m just saying that if you’re going to be a Muslim and pray every day, that doesn’t necessarily make you a good person."

This week, the annual British event known as "Islam Expo" came to a close. In 2006, this "celebration" of Islamic heritage and identity gathered criticism as the event - then held in Alexandra Palace in North London - took place while relatives were commemorating the first anniversary of the 7/7 attacks. Additionally, some of the proposed speakers at that 2006 event were known to hold extremist views.

One of these individuals was Qazi Hussain Ahmed, the head of the Pakistani Jamaat-e-Islami party, who had praised Osama bin Laden and other Al Qaeda members. "Qazi Hussain Ahmed, though invited, did not attend the 2006 Islam Expo event due to political engagements.

A speaker who did attend the 2006 event was Azzam Tamimi, who is a spokesperson for the Muslim Association of Britain (MAB). The MAB was co-founded in 1997 by a senior figure within the international Muslim Brotherhood - Kemal el-Helbawy. Read more ...

Scottish government to fund Scottish Islamic Foundation

The Scottish government has given £215,000 to the "Scottish Islamic Foundation", a new group set up by Osama Saeed, a former spokesman for the Muslim Association of Britain (MAB), the British wing of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Scotland On Sunday reported yesterday that the group has received £200,000 to hold "Islamfest", an Islamic event in Glasgow, along with an additional £10,152 for computers and office equipment and £5,600 for administration and training.

However, the newspaper also reported that the grant "has infuriated senior members of the Muslim community", including members of larger and longer-established Islamic organisations. Read more ...

UK: Man Admits Plotting To Behead Muslim Soldier

In January 2007, police carried out raids in Birmingham. At the time, there was hostility and resentment from Muslim "representatives" to the raid. Dr. Mohammad Naseem, chairman of the Birmingham Central Mosque, claimed Britain was becoming a police state, and compared Muslims in Britain to Jews living under Hitler. Mahmoud Shadrajeh, head of the improbably named "Islamic Human Rights Commission" – himself a supporter of Hizbollah's terrorism – claimed the Birmingham raids gave to the public a "bad image" of Muslims.

Adam Mussa of the Muslim Brotherhood-founded Muslim Association of Britain (MAB) claimed: "Some of the people arrested are just individuals with loud voices, who are vocal about various neighborhood issues, but that doesn't make them terrorists. It's not fair. This seems to be happening again and again. This is a form of victimization and your average 'Mo Public' is feeling very cynical. When you come in and do a job you should make sure you clean up after yourself, and that's what the police need to do here." Read more ...
