AIPAC rival 'J Street' tied to Qatar, George Soros

WASHINGTON — A new Jewish lobby that claims to be supportive of Israel has been linked to Qatar.

A former Israeli diplomat has asserted that J Street has been connected to Qatar through the U.S. public relations firm of Fenton Communications.

Lenny Ben-David, a former diplomat and now consultant, said J Street founder Jeremy Ben-Ami, a senior vice president at Fenton until the lobby's establishment in 2008, could have been involved in a March 2009 project by Qatar to undermine support for Israel in the United States.

The Fenton contract with Qatar was disclosed as J Street, regarded as close to the administration of President Barack Obama, was preparing its first annual conference, said to include 150 members of Congress. The lobby failed to ensure the attendance of Israel's ambassador in Washington, Michael Oren.

"In early 2009, Fenton signed contracts with a Qatari foundation to lead an 18-month long anti-Israel campaign in the United States with a special focus on campuses," Ben-David said in an open letter to Ben-Ami.

"Did you sever your ties with Fenton when you began J Street? Do you retain any role or holdings in Fenton today? Did you play any role in introducing Fenton to the Qatari agents or play any role in facilitating the contract? Were you aware of the negotiations or the contract signed on March 12, 2009?"

Ben-David said J Street's 160-member advisory board included those listed as foreign agents for Egypt and Saudi Arabia, Middle East Newsline reported. His letter also cited J Street's ties with U.S. billionaire George Soros, said to have long sought to undermine the traditional pro-Israel lobby in Washington.

"So, it appears that Soros has created an organization that competes with AIPAC, calls for inclusion of Hamas, and opposes sanctions against Iran," Ben-David said. "His people sit on J Street's board, and his other offspring from the New America Foundation and the National Iranian American Council, work in lockstep."

The Fenton contract with Qatar was disclosed as J Street, regarded as close to the administration of President Barack Obama, was preparing its first annual conference, said to include 150 members of Congress. The lobby failed to ensure the attendance of Israel's ambassador in Washington, Michael Oren.

"These questions are relevant because it's important to know if J Street's refusal to support Israel's anti-Hamas military campaign was influenced by your ties with Fenton, whose promotional material claims: 'We only represent people and projects we believe in,'" the letter, titled "Showdown on J Street," said.

J Street has reported more than 30 contributors, many of them with ties to Arab-American organizations and Iran. The lobby has fought Israel's efforts for U.S. sanctions on Iran.

"Heads of other pro-Arab organizations, such as AMIDEAST, and Arab foreign agents are contributors to the PAC," Ben-David said. "But Mr. Ben-Ami claims that no organizations or foreign governments contribute. They don't need do; their representatives do."

On Oct. 20, the Israel embassy in Washington said Oren would not attend J Street's conference, scheduled to begin on Oct. 25. In contrast, the White House has sent National Security Advisor James Jones to give the keynote address.

"In response to the question about J Street's invitation to participate in its conference, the Embassy of Israel has been privately communicating its concerns over certain policies of the organization that may impair the interests of Israel," the embassy said in a statement. "Accordingly, the embassy will send an observer to the conference and will follow its proceedings with interest."

The Professor's Obsession

Beinin
By Cinnamon Stillwell

Stanford Middle East history professor Joel Beinin’s appearances on the Peninsula Peace and Justice Center (PPJC) Palo Alto cable television program “Other Voices” reliably produce anti-American, anti-Israel invective. In September 2008, Beinin declared, “The American empire is going down,” and during a taping for the February 2009 show, “Gaza and the Future,” he pronounced, “The United States aids and abets Israeli war crimes.”

What Beinin labeled Israeli “war crimes” (i.e. defending its citizenry) and U.S. collusion therewith were central to his discussion, as the show aired soon after Israel’s military incursion into Gaza in December 2008.

One might have thought Obama’s election would make Beinin optimistic about the prospects for weakening U.S. support for Israel, but his mood was decidedly downbeat. Obama, Beinin predicted, would “act like all America presidents” by “pushing U.S. interests with foreign policy.” (What country doesn’t pursue its own interests with foreign policy?) But, Beinin allowed, if Obama were to simply issue a “statement” telling Israel “it’s committing war crimes,” “going against U.N resolutions,” and that “the U.S. will no longer sell Israel weapons,” “the Israel Lobby and AIPAC would crumble.” The crowd of mostly aging hippies murmured in agreement. Emanuel: Thwarting Iran hinges on Israeli-Palestinian talks

Thwarting Iran's nuclear program is conditional on progress in peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians, according to White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.

White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.

Israeli TV reports said Monday that Emanuel made the comments in a closed-door meeting the previous day with 300 major AIPAC donors.

Last month, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned Israel that it risks losing Arab support for combating threats from Iran if it rejects peace negotiations with the Palestinians.

Clinton said Arab nations had conditioned helping Israel counter Iran on Jerusalem's commitment to the peace process.

Meanwhile, in an interview with the Jerusalem Post Sunday, former US House speaker Newt Gingrich blasted the Obama administration for setting itself on a collision course with Israel and endangering the Jewish state. He called US President Barack Obama's program of engagement on Iran a "fantasy," and his Middle East policies "very dangerous for Israel."

He summed up Obama's approach as "the clearest adoption of weakness since Jimmy Carter."

Gingrich tells 'Post': Obama endangering the Jewish state

Former US House Speaker Newt Gingrich on Sunday blasted the Obama administration for setting itself on a collision course with Israel and endangering the Jewish state, ahead of his address to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).

"They are systematically setting up the most decisive confrontation that we've ever seen," the leading Republican politician told The Jerusalem Post, referring to news reports about the administration's approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

"There's almost an eagerness to take on the Israeli government to make a point with the Arab world," he said, speaking to the Post ahead of his speech before the American Israel Public Affairs Committee's annual conference.

He called US President Barack Obama's program of engagement on Iran a "fantasy," and his Middle East policies "very dangerous for Israel." He summed up Obama's approach as "the clearest adoption of weakness since Jimmy Carter."

Instead, he maintained, the US should be sending the message to Israel that "we are for the survival of Israel" and that "we are not going to tolerate Iran getting nuclear weapons."

He added that creating prosperity among Palestinians was important, and that the US should be helping their leaders grow their society and crowd out Hamas.

The Obama administration has also been trying to support the Fatah party as it shuns Hamas, and is looking to restart the peace process between Israel and the Palestinians in part to accomplish that end. The US government has also been focusing on engaging Iran to try to prevent them from obtaining nuclear weapons, holding out the possibility of more economic sanctions should the diplomatic process fail.
Gingrich is touted as a possible Republican candidate in the next presidential campaign and has re-established himself as a top leader in the
Republican party as the GOP struggles to redefine its identity and appeal to voters after electoral losses this fall.

Major Democratic figures, including US Vice President Joe Biden, will be addressing the conference in the coming days.
