 Ali Hassan al-Majid, also known as "Chemical Ali", has been sentenced to death for ordering the gassing of Kurds in the Iraqi village of Halabja, state television has reported. Al-Majid, who was a senior aide to Saddam Hussein, the executed Iraqi leader, was sentenced to be hanged for the 1988 attack, in which 5,000 Kurds are thought to have died. Families of some victims cheered in court when the guilty verdict was handed down on Sunday. "The decision has been issued today, January 17, to sentence Ali Hassan al-Majid, to death by hanging ... for crimes against humanity," Aref Abdul-Razzaq al-Shahin, the head of the court, said. The Iraqi High Tribunal also sentenced three other Saddam aides, including the former defence minister, to 10 to 15 years in prison for the Halabja attack. In March 1988, Iraqi jets swooped over the village and sprayed it with a deadly mix of mustard gas and the nerve agents Tabun, Sarin and VX. Three-quarters of the victims in the five-hour assault were women and children. It is thought to have been the deadliest gas attack ever carried out against civilians. Al-Majid, a cousin of Saddam, was nicknamed "Chemical Ali" for overseeing the gassing of Iraqi Kurds during the so-called Operation Anfal campaign, which culminated in 1988. About 182,000 Kurds were estimated to have been killed in gas and bomb attacks during the Anfal operation, while 4,000 villages were destroyed. The latest sentence comes 10 months after the same court handed down a death sentence to al-Majid for his involvement in the killing and displacement of Shia Muslims in 1999. He had already received death sentences for crushing a Shia revolt soon after the 1991 Gulf War and for his role in the Anfal campaign.  THE prosecution case against the only accused Mumbai gunman to be captured alive will close today, one year after the attacks, bringing him a step closer to a possible death sentence. Mohammed Ajmal Kasab, 21, who allegedly opened fire on commuters at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Mumbai's main railway station, has admitted to a high-security court that he was one of ten men who killed 166 people in a commando-style assault on India's financial capital a year ago.
To Indian eyes, however, justice will only be served when those behind the attack are brought to trial - something that they say would require more action by Pakistan, which is accused of sheltering them.
Mr Kasab, a Pakistani national, is accused of being a footsoldier for the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) group. He is charged with murder and waging war on India - crimes that carry the death penalty.
 A man has been sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia for witchcraft because he makes predictions on television. Ali Sibat is not even a Saudi national. The Lebanese citizen was only visiting Saudi Arabia on pilgrimage when he was arrested in Medina last year. A court in the city condemned him as a witch on Nov. 9. The only evidence presented in court was reportedly the claim he appeared regularly on Lebanese satellite issuing general advice on life and making predictions about the future. The case is causing outrage among human rights campaigners but has made little news elsewhere despite the ludicrous nature of the charges and the extraordinary severity of Sibat's sentence. "Saudi courts are sanctioning a literal witch hunt by the religious police," said Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East director at Human Rights Watch. "The crime of witchcraft is being used against all sorts of behavior, with the cruel threat of state sanctioned executions." Ali Sibat's supporters say he was denied a lawyer at his trial and was tricked into making a confession. He is not the only victim of Saudi Arabia's literal witch hunt. Human Rights Watch says two other people have been arrested on similar charges in the last month alone. It claims a lower court in Jeddah started the trial of a Saudi this month who was arrested by the religious police and said to have smuggled a book of witchcraft into the kingdom. In another case the religious police are said to have arrested for "sorcery" and "charlatanry" an Asian man accusing him of using supernatural powers to solve marital disputes and induce others to fall in love. In 2006 a Jeddah court convicted an Eritrean national Muhammad Burhan for "charlatanry" because he possessed a phone book that contained writings in the Tigrinya alphabet used in Eritrea. FoxNews 
 TEHRAN - Iran has sentenced five people to death over the unrest that followed the country's disputed June presidential election, state television reported Tuesday. At least three others caught up in the turmoil have received death sentences previously. Iran began a mass trial in August of prominent opposition figures and activists, accusing them of a range of charges from rioting to spying and plotting what authorities have called a "soft revolution" to topple the country's Islamic rulers. The opposition led massive street protests and clashed with security forces in the weeks following the disputed June 12 presidential election. The opposition claimed fraud after election authorities declared President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad the winner of a second term and their anger unleashed the most serious internal unrest in Iran in the 30 years since the Islamic Revolution. A Justice Department statement said the five sentenced to death were members of "terrorist and armed opposition groups," state television reported. The statement said the courts have sentenced a total of 89 defendants since the process began and 81 of them got prison terms ranging from six months up to 15 years. "So far, 89 of defendants were tried and based on their cases, death sentences were issued for five of them," the statement said. It said the 81 people sentenced to prison terms were charged with a range of offenses from security violations, agitating against the Islamic Republic, violating law and order, damaging public and private property, and assaulting civilians and security forces.  JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) - A group of 10 alleged Iranian drug smugglers, including eight veiled women, were caught with $12.5 million worth of methamphetamines at Indonesia's main airport, the customs chief said Wednesday. The group was picked up at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta airport with 60 pounds (27 kilograms) of crystal methamphetamine and 5 gallons (23 liters) of the drug in liquid form, said customs chief Anwar Suprijadi. It is the largest drug bust in the airport's history, he said, describing how the group had arrived on flights from Malaysia, Syria and Qatar on Monday and Tuesday. Indonesian authorities have never seen veiled women used as drug runners, he said.
The drugs, wrapped in plastic food containers and cleaning fluid bottles, were packed into hand luggage. But the oddly-shaped packages were picked out by officers operating scanners. "We believe they are part of an international syndicate," he said. By wearing conservative Islamic clothing the women tried to "fool officers in a country like Indonesia, where women in black veils are generally considered to be good women." Nine suspects were paraded in front of the media at an airport detention facility Wednesday, while a tenth is said to have attempted suicide and was in a hospital. A 26-year-old man, who allegedly carried the liquid drug from Doha, tried to sever an artery with a razor blade. Police said they were trying to uncover a possible link to the arrest on Monday of another Iranian and an American in raids that netted more than 12 pounds (5.6 kilograms) of methamphetamines at an apartment and a hotel room in the nearby capital. Deputy chief of investigations Dikdik Maulana Mansyur estimated the seizure was worth $950,000. He said the 35-year-old American, who posed as a tourist to make deliveries to local hotels, faces up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000. The Iranian, 40, has a previous drug conviction from 2002 and can expect a tougher sentence, he said. Indonesia has extremely strict drug laws and traffickers are regularly sentenced to death.
By the end of 2008, about 140 people were on death row, including more than 40 foreigners, most of them for drug-related crimes. Customs offices across Indonesia, a vast Muslim-majority nation of 235 million people, were warned to be on the lookout for other possible smuggling attempts.  A COURT in western China's Xinjiang region sentenced six more Uighurs to death over deadly ethnic unrest in July, bringing the total to 12.
Three other people were handed life sentences by the court in the regional capital Urumqi for their role in the July 5 unrest that rocked the city, pitting mainly Muslim Uighurs against members of China's dominant Han group.
On Monday, six defendants - all Uighurs - were handed the death penalty and another was given life in jail over the unrest, which left nearly 200 people dead, most of them Han, according to the government.
The riots were the worst ethnic violence to hit China in decades, and left more than 1,600 people injured.
The nine who were sentenced were part of a larger group of 14 tried a day earlier, but the two-sentence Xinhua report did not mention the five remaining defendants.
None of the nine convicted was identified.
A spokeswoman for the city government in Urumqi confirmed that verdicts had been announced, but said she had no further details.
Officials at the local court were not immediately available for comment.
Aside from the 21 tried this week, police have also detained about 700 other people suspected of crimes related to the unrest, earlier reports have said.
China's roughly eight million Uighurs have long complained of religious, political and cultural oppression by Chinese authorities, and tensions have simmered in the Xinjiang region for years.
Uighurs say the unrest was triggered when police cracked down on peaceful protests by Uighurs over a late June brawl at a factory in southern China that state media said left two Uighurs dead.
One ethnic Han man was sentenced to death and a second handed a life prison term over that brawl in verdicts announced on Saturday in southern China.
Authorities, however, have blamed the Xinjiang unrest on "ethnic separatists", without providing any evidence.
 Six people were sentenced to death for murder and other crimes in riots that killed about 200 people in western China, state media reported Monday. A seventh person was sentenced to life in prison, the Xinhua news agency said. The riots in July were prompted by long-simmering resentment between minority Uyghurs and majority Han Chinese.
The Uyghurs are mostly Muslims in western China's Xinjiang province. Some Islamists refer to the region as East Turkistan. Last month, China sent 7,000 officials to Urumqi to ease tensions after Han Chinese protested a series of attacks in which syringes were used as weapons.

 Three Iranians have been tentatively sentenced to death in connection with post-election protest activities, according to semi-official state media. The three -- who were identified only by initials -- were accused of contacts with opposition groups, the semi-official ISNA news agency reported Saturday. The death sentences can be appealed, ISNA reported, quoting Bashiri Rad, director of public relations of the Tehran judiciary. No other information was released about the three defendants or the charges they faced. The Iranian government restricts the activity of journalists in Iran, making it difficult for news organizations to independently obtain or confirm information. Tens of thousands of Iranians took to the streets in protest following the country's contested June 12 presidential election. Incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won a second term despite widespread fraud accusations by supporters of opposition candidates. Dozens of protesters have been tried in the months since. Opposition presidential candidates Mehdi Karrubi and Mir Hossein Moussavi have alleged that those convicted were tortured into confessing, and that some defendants were raped in prison. Reformist former President Mohammad Khatami condemned "the atrocities committed at certain detention centers, as well as those committed during arrests, which, in some cases, resulted in murder," according to a statement issued by his office in August.  By Kim Sengupta in Kabul Conservative and religious groups in Afghanistan reacted with fury yesterday to the news that Sayed Pervez Kambaksh, who was sentenced to death for promoting women's rights, has been freed. After President Hamid Karzai secretly pardoned the 24-year-old student, hardliners called for an urgent ulama, a meeting of Islamic scholars, to organise protests against the decision. Mr Kambaksh's brother, Sayed Yaqub Ibrahimi, said he was "very glad, very happy" at what had happened, and human rights organisations and a number of liberal parliamentarians welcomed the news. The fate of Mr Kambaksh became a cause célèbre after his plight was revealed by The Independent. A petition to secure justice secured more than 100,000 signatures and the Afghan government came under pressure from Western leaders to free him. Mr Kambaksh's original death sentence was set aside by Afghanistan's Supreme Court. But the judges ruled that he must serve at least 20 years in prison. Following the presidential amnesty he is now starting a life with a new identity in another country after 20 months of incarceration. Mr Ibrahimi said: "We are all very happy that so much progress has been made with Pervez and I want to thank all the people who have helped in this. I have to be careful about what I say but, of course, Pervez should never have been put in that position, it was wrong. The family is very glad he is out."  Farzad Kamangar, a 33-year-old teacher, journalist and human rights activist, is awaiting execution in Iran's notorious Evin prison. The Islamic regime calls him a terrorist, but his real crime is being a Kurd. Mr. Kamangar taught at an elementary school in the northwestern Iranian city of Kamyaran, where he was a member of the Kurdistan Teachers Union and wrote for various underground human rights publications. He secretly taught his Kurdish students their banned language and told stories about their culture and history. He was detained by Iranian police in Tehran in July 2006 when traveling to visit his brother, a Kurdish activist. He disappeared into the Iranian prison system with no word to his family or friends. After many months, a horror story emerged. In a November 2007 letter smuggled from prison, Mr. Kamangar detailed the many forms of torture to which he had been subjected, including beatings, whippings, electric shocks and solitary confinement in cold, squalid cells. He was deprived of sleep, denied clean clothes and given barely edible food. At one prison, he was subjected to something called "the chicken kebab" administered by the warden, which involved being trussed up and whipped. A Palestinian court has sentenced a man to death by hanging for selling West Bank land to Israeli citizens.
The sentence was handed down Tuesday by a court in the West Bank town of Hebron, but it may be unlikely to be carried out.
Prosecutors say the defendant sold to Israelis land that did not belong to him in the village of Beit Omar near Hebron.
The Palestinian Authority considers the sale of Palestinian land to Israelis to be treason.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas must approve the sentence for it to be carried out. He has withheld approval in many other death penalty cases. Several other Palestinians charged with collaborating with Israel are currently on death row. Source: VOA News

Sheikh Tamimi's warning came in response to reports that Jewish businessmen from the US had purchased 20 dunams of land from Palestinians on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem. Warning the Palestinians against engaging in "suspicious real estate deeds," the religious leader said that according to Islamic teachings it was a "grave sin" to sell houses and lands to Jews. He said that the ban also applies to real estate agents or middlemen who are involved in such transactions. He warned that anyone who ignores the warning would be punished in accordance with Islamic teachings and would also be ostracized by his community and family. An Islamist spokesman in the port of Kismayo told the BBC that Abdirahman Ahmed was shot dead on Thursday. Mr Ahmed was also accused of spying for Ethiopian forces, said to be backing the forces of warlord Barre Hiraale in trying to recapture Kismayo. He is believed to be the first politician executed by the Islamists. Ethiopian forces are pulling out of Somalia, two years after they intervened to try to oust Islamists from the capital Mogadishu. But their mission to prop up the interim government is widely regarded as a failure as various Islamist group have recently advanced and once more control much of the country.  TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - Iran's Supreme Court upheld the stoning death sentence against woman convicted of adultery in the southern city of Shiraz, an independent newspaper reported Saturday. The daily Etemad Melli, or National Confidence, reported that the court also upheld another death sentence, this one by hanging, against the woman who also was convicted of killing her husband with the help of a male accomplice. The man was sentenced to 15 years in prison after he was convicted of being an accomplice in a murder. He also was sentenced to 100 lashes for adultery, but was not given the death penalty because he was married. The newspaper only identified the two by their first names. Judiciary officials were not immediately available for comment. It was not known when the slaying took place or when the two were convicted. While the ruling is final, Iran's judiciary chief or the country's supreme leader are authorized to stop death sentences from being carried out. Under Iran's Islamic laws, adultery is the only capital offense punishable by stoning. A man is usually buried up to his waist, while a woman is buried up to her neck. Those carrying out the verdict then throw stones until the condemned dies. In July, Iran stoned a man convicted of adultery to death after the sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court. Stoning was widely imposed in the early years after Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution, but it has seldom been applied in recent years, though the government rarely confirms when it carries out stoning sentences. The Pakistani Taliban have killed a married woman after pronouncing her guilty of committing "adultery" in the troubled northwestern Swat valley, and warned women in an adjoining tribal area against applying for national identity cards. The Taliban tried the woman in a 'Shariah court' in Matta sub-district of Swat for allegedly committing adultery and found her guilty. They then asked her brother-in-law to shoot her dead in their presence. The brother-in-law killed the woman on Sunday by spraying bullets at her, The News daily reported on Monday. The Taliban have been running Shariah courts in areas controlled by them and punishing people with impunity. The courts have given death sentences and punished "criminals" with public flogging. The militants also put up posters at Landi Kotal in the Khyber tribal region warning women against visiting offices of the National Database and Registration Authority to apply for identity cards. The midwife's defiance would prove fatal: Two months ago, the insurgents shot her dead. What had enraged the Islamist rebels, however, was a surprising issue, more often debated in the West than Afghanistan. As part of a fledgling family planning program, the worker known only as Zarghona was distributing condoms and birth-control pills, and the insurgents called that sacrilege. "We took up arms against the Infidels in order to bring Islamic law to this land," said a chilling letter delivered later to her employer, bearing the seal of the Taliban military council.  KISMAYU, SOMALIA - Somali Islamists have stoned to death a woman accused of adultery in the first such public killing by the militants for about two years. The 23-year-old woman was executed late on Monday in front of hundreds of people in the southern port of Kismayu, which the Islamist insurgents captured in August, witnesses said. Guards opened fire when a relative ran forward, killing a child, they said. “A woman in green veil and black mask was brought in a car as we waited to watch the merciless act of stoning,” one local resident, Abdullahi Aden, told Reuters. “We were told she submitted herself to be punished, yet we could see her screaming as she was forcefully bound, legs and hands. A relative of hers ran towards her, but the Islamists opened fire and killed a child.” The Islamists last carried out public executions when they ruled Mogadishu and most of south Somalia for half of 2006. Allied Ethiopian and Somali government forces toppled them at the end of that year, but they have waged an Iraq-style guerrilla campaign since then, gradually taking territory back.
