Fourth church attacked in Malaysia as Allah row deepens

KUALA LUMPUR - Arsonists in Malaysia struck a fourth church on Saturday as the government tried to soothe tensions arising from a row over the use of the word "Allah" to refer to the Christian God.

The unprecedented attacks risk dividing the mainly Muslim nation of 28 million people, which has significant religious minorities, and complicating Prime Minister Najib Razak's plan to win back support from the non-Muslims before the next elections by 2013.

The row, over a court ruling that allowed a Catholic newspaper to use Allah in its Malay-language editions, prompted Muslims to protest at mosques on Friday and sparked arson attacks on three churches that saw one Pentecostalist church gutted.

While Najib visited the badly damaged Pentecostalist church and offered a government grant of half a million ringgit ($148,100) to maintain "a harmonious society," church leaders said they wanted more concrete assurances of safety.

"We ask the government to make a strong statement to these wrongdoers so we can worship in peace on Sunday," Reverend Hermen Shastri, secretary-general to the Council of Churches Malaysia, told Reuters.

Malaysia is mainly Muslim and Malay but there are substantial ethnic Chinese and Indian minorities who mainly practice Christianity, Buddhism and Hinduism.

These minorities handed the government its biggest losses in 2008 state and national elections in part due to feelings of religious marginalization and growing disillusionment with corruption.

In the latest attack on early Saturday, unidentified attackers flung a home-made petrol bomb at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in a suburb in Selangor state. The two-storey bungalow sustained minor damage, church officials said.

Police said they have stepped up security at all places of worship but faced a manpower shortage. Inspector General of Police Musa Hasan told churches across the country to hire more security guards.

Christians account for nine percent of the 28 million population, with a sizable number of non-English speaking Christians in Malaysia's Borneo island states of Sabah and Sarawak who have used the word "Allah" for decades.

Najib's handling of the issue will determine whether he can keep the support of the Malays and win back ethnic Chinese and Indian voters to solidify his grip on power after taking control of the government last year.

"Till today we are protecting the interests of other races besides championing those of the Malays," Najib was earlier quoted as saying by state news agency Bernama.

"Don't point fingers and say UMNO is racist...when churches are burned," he said referring to his party, the United Malays National Organization (UMNO) that is the linchpin of the National Front that has ruled the country for 52 years.

But Malay-Muslims, including those in UMNO, fear the word could be used by Christians to proselytize to Muslims, which is already illegal in the Southeast Asian country.

More than 169,000 Malaysians have joined a group page on social networking site Facebook called "Protesting the use of the name Allah by non-Muslims," a fourfold increase from the start of this week that signals growing Islamic anger.

120,000 sign up to Facebook protest to stop Islamic extremist march through Wootton Bassett

By Ian Drury and Andy Dolan

More than 120,000 people had last night signed an internet petition protesting about plans by Islamic extremists to march through Wootton Bassett.

Hate preacher Anjem Choudary sparked outrage by saying his radical group Islam4UK would parade through the town renowned for honouring soldiers killed in Afghanistan.

The firebrand cleric said 500 of his supporters would carry 'symbolic coffins' in memory of the Muslim civilians ' murdered by merciless' coalition forces.

In remarks designed to cause maximum offence, he compared fallen British heroes to Nazi stormtroopers and the September 11 and July 7 terrorists. He even claimed his plan was backed by families of servicemen and women.

But MPs, military chiefs, moderate Muslims and councillors expressed horror that 42-year-old Choudary was 'hijacking' the town for political purposes. In less than 48 hours, more than 120,000 people joined a Facebook campaign opposing the march by Islam4UK, which calls itself a 'platform' for the banned extremist group al-Muhajiroun.

Petition organiser Jo Cleary, who works with service families, urged supporters to express their 'alarm and distress' to Wiltshire Police in a bid to stop the plan.

She said: 'This group can march anywhere it wishes in the country but has chosen Wootton Bassett to cause outrage and offence. We need our politicians to make a statement saying that this march will never take place.'

Peter Fullarton, whose son James, 24, was killed by a Taliban bomb only weeks after proposing to his fiancee last year said the Government must ban the march or risk an 'uproar'.

He said: 'Not only will it be an incredible insult to our war dead and to the fantastic town of Wootton Bassett, but there could be a riot, white extremists could use it as justification for attacks, people could end up being killed. We lost 108 soldiers in Afghanistan last year. For them, if for nobody else, these sickening plans must be stopped.'

Steve Minter, whose son-in-law Serjeant Paul McAleese was also killed by a bomb, said: 'I am all for free speech, but this is an abuse of our tolerant democracy.

'Too many of these extremists have been allowed to make Britain their home because they have won the right to political asylum, then they abuse our decency by putting forward views that would lead to execution in their own country.

'If this march goes ahead - and I hope to God it does not - the police will have an awful job on their hands. I for one will be there to protest.'

Wooton Bassett has a tradition of parading the coffins of local soldiers that died in combat through the town

Shahid Murasaleen, from the moderate Muslim group Minhajul-Quran International UK, said: 'Extremists like these always claim to speak for Islam and British Muslims yet they are not qualified to do either. This march will achieve nothing other than to incite hate crime against innocent law-abiding Muslims.'

The market town near Swindon has become a symbol of the public's respect for the troops who make the ultimate sacrifice. Hundreds of mourners line the High Street to pay silent tribute to service personnel repatriated through nearby RAF Lyneham.

Former mayor Chris Wannell said: 'We are a traditional old English market town who honour very much our Queen and country. If this man has any decency about him he will not hold a march through Wootton Bassett.'

Wiltshire Police confirmed that they were aware of the plan, although Choudary had not contacted them. Islam4UK will have to tell police the date, time and route of a proposed procession.

A police spokesman said: 'If a march is believed to be likely to result in serious disorder, disruption or damage, then the police can impose conditions upon the organiser.

In exceptional circumstances, police may apply to the local authority for an order prohibiting such a march.'

Dearborn Muslims plan to protest Flight 253 jihadist to show Islam is peaceful

For years I have pointed out that there have been no protests in the Islamic world against those who have supposedly hijacked their religion, except when the jihadis kill other Muslims.

There have been protests against cartoons of Muhammad, and statements of the Pope, but not against the jihadists. So this one bears watching. It will be very interesting to see what kind of crowd gathers there.

"Protest planned to tell world: Islam is peaceful," by Eric D. Lawrence for the Detroit Free Press, December 28:

The organizers of a Dearborn-area group on Facebook are calling for Muslims to protest against the actions of a Nigerian man accused of trying to attack a Northwest Airlines flight en route to Detroit Metro Airport on Friday.

Majed Moughni, a Dearborn attorney, said Sunday afternoon that Muslims need to let the world know that those who would commit terrorism do not represent Islam.

"It's very frustrating to know that these guys are using Islam and committing terror," he said. "Islam stands for peace."

His Facebook group, Dearborn Area Community Members, is calling for local Muslims to hold a protest during the scheduled Jan. 8 hearing in U.S. District Court in Detroit for Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab. The 23-year-old was charged Saturday with trying to detonate an explosive device on Northwest Airlines Flight 253 on Friday. He told federal authorities he was acting on orders from Al Qaeda.

Information about the protest is being posted on the group's Facebook page: "Please bring your signs, and American flags: theme: 'NOT IN THE NAME OF ISLAM,' " according to one post.

Fatme Nemer, 24, a Dearborn resident and member of the Facebook group, agreed that the time had come to protest against terrorism....

Yes, eight years and 15,000 jihad attacks after 9/11, maybe now is the time.

SHOCKER: Five Americans Recruited for Jihad on Facebook and YouTube

Just kidding regarding the "shock." We've been studying this for quite some time. Having originally learned about efforts to monitor, expose, and shut down sites primarily in the Web 1.0 environment from our friends at sites like Jawa Report and Internet Haganah, we saw a new frontier of problems in the Web 2.0 environment.

Whereas many groups were just focusing on jihadist content, we saw just as many concerns with antisemitic content.

Besides the people already interested in these dangerous developments, very few even paid attention when we found and shut down the Mumbai terrorists on Facebook

Since going public with our activities in May 2008, the JIDF has been responsible for finding, exposing and shutting down thousands of antisemitic and jihadist Facebook groups and pages, impacting hundreds of thousands of antisemitic and jihadist Facebook members.

We have also found, exposed, and shut down thousands of jihadist and antisemitic channels and videos on YouTube. The evidence of our effort can be found all over our website.

Are we bragging? No. Our work is just a drop in the bucket of what must be done. Our work needs funding in order to continue and to expand, or else we will continue to see antisemitism grow stronger and more problems of young Americans being recruited for jihad, as we see now:

Washington Post:

Five Northern Virginia men who were arrested in Pakistan last week as part of a terrorism probe appeared in court for the first time Tuesday and were ordered held for up to 10 days of interrogation, Pakistani officials said.

The men, ages 18 to 24, traveled overseas just after Thanksgiving without telling their families, triggering an international missing-persons case. Police and intelligence officials have said the men were in contact for months with a Taliban recruiter and were trying to join up with al-Qaeda.

They were hoping to work with jihadist groups and battle U.S. troops in Afghanistan, Pakistani officials have said. U.S. law enforcement officials are considering criminal charges against the men but have said nothing is imminent.

The five -- Ramy Zamzam, 22; Ahmad A. Minni, 20; Umar Chaudhry, 24; Waqar Khan, 22; and Aman Hassan Yemer, 18 -- are all Muslims from the Alexandria area. They were transferred Saturday from Sargodha to Lahore, where they were being questioned by the FBI. Pakistani officials had said they wanted more time to interrogate the men about their possible radical ties in Pakistan.
AP:
The detainees are accused of using Facebook and YouTube Web sites to try and connect with extremist groups in Pakistan and are said to have established contact with a Taliban recruiter. They have not been charged with any crime.

Please note, content which promotes hatred and violence is against the TOS of companies like Facebook and YouTube, which we have found, for the most part, to be extremely negligent in dealing with these serious concerns.

Facebook especially seems more concerned about targeting Jewish, pro-Israel advocates than they are about removing antisemites, Holocaust deniers, and terrorists from their platform.

With thanks to JIDF

Pakistan Police Seize Personal Items from Americans in Terror Case

KARACHI, Pakistan — Pakistani police Monday seized luggage and a cell phone from a hotel where three of five Americans arrested on suspicion of militant links stayed, while a court ruled the men cannot be deported until judges review the case.

Police allege the young Americans intended to join militants in the northwest tribal areas and then travel to Afghanistan before their arrest last week. The case has fanned fears that Americans and other Westerners are heading to Pakistan to link up with Al Qaeda and other militant groups.

Police searched the mid-range Saddam Hotel in the southern city of Karachi, the country's commercial hub, where some of the men stayed on Nov. 30 after their arrival in the country. They found five travel bags containing clothes, a cell phone and a book, police official Abdullah Sheikh said.

Hotel manager Mohammed Farooq Khan said the three left the hotel without informing management after staying one night.

The book was "The Pact," the best-selling true story of three young men from broken homes who pledged to support each other as they pursue academic dreams.

The detainees are accused of using Facebook and YouTube Web sites to try and connect with extremist groups in Pakistan and are said to have established contact with a Taliban recruiter. They have not been formally charged with any crime or produced in court.

The court order Monday was aimed at preventing any deportation of the Americans before the judiciary gets a chance to review the case, Lahore High Court registrar Tahir Pervez said. No deportation order is known to have been issued so far, but officials in both countries have said such a move is likely.

The court issued the order in response to a petition from Khalid Khawaja, a civil rights activist who has often filed court cases on behalf of alleged militants and people believed to have disappeared at the hands of Pakistan's security apparatus.

Pervez said the court ordered the government of Punjab province to file a report on the case in a hearing Thursday.

The men, who are from the Washington, D.C. area, were picked up by Pakistani authorities last week in the Punjab town of Sargodha after their worried families in the U.S. turned to the FBI to track them down. They were shifted over the weekend to Lahore, the provincial capital, for further questioning.

FBI agents, who have been granted some access to the men, are trying to see if there is enough evidence to charge any of them with conspiracy to provide material support to a terrorist group, an American official and another person familiar with the case said Friday.

All the rage

A career in rock ’n’ roll might not be a conventional – or easy – choice for young Pakistanis, but despite the militant insurgency and social difficulties, aspiring musicians are finding ways to keep an alternative music scene alive.

Even with accelerating Taliban violence, Pakistan’s underground music-makers are rocking on.

“Our students have started forming bands; the youngest group consists of three seven-year-old boys. All play astonishingly well, and are fast improving every day”, says Abid Khan, one of the founders and teachers of Lahore’s Guitar School, which opened recently on the back of growing interest in contemporary music, stimulated by satellite television and the increasingly free and diverse broadcast media.

This has given Pakistani rock a contemporary foothold from which many bands have moved on to establish their own methods of promotion through social networking sites, putting their work on MySpace and Facebook.

Radio stations across the country are increasingly playing tracks by rising Pakistani bands and now musicians and teachers are encouraging youth participation.

At Lahore’s Guitar School, for example, almost 50 students attend classes given by established rock ’n’ rollers, most often in guitar. Khan says the school, in the city’s Defence district, was established in the face of declining demand for musicians in Pakistan, but on the back of popular interest in Pakistani rock.

“All we were focusing on in the beginning was to make money to get by, as work for musicians and opportunities in general were depleting. Teaching and sharing our skills with others was the most logical thing that came to mind,” he explains.

The school, which also teaches music theory and keeps a library of independent records, quickly became not just a financial venture, but a social and artistic one.

Khan adds: “Now that the school is up and running, we are realising the huge potential that music has for creating a healthy change in society.”

Local women up in arms over Dubai doctor’s talk with Oprah

Haneen Dajani

A recent episode of a top-rated American TV talk show has prompted a barrage of comments on online forums about the way it portrayed Emirati women. The Oprah Winfrey Show, which is broadcast locally on MBC4, featured women from various cities around the world including Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo and Istanbul talking about their daily lives.

Dr Lamees Hamdan, a physician, businesswoman and mother of four from Dubai, was one of six women featured on a show about the happiest people in the world.

She allowed cameras into her five-bedroom house, her daughters’ bedrooms and her kitchen, which she said she rarely uses because her in-laws, who live across the street, have a private chef.

Dr Hamdan said that people in the UAE do not pay for electricity or health care. And although she chose not to wear a shela or abaya, she told Oprah, via Skype, that her sisters did and that their decision was cultural, rather than religious.

The episode of the show, which draws an average of 10 million viewers a month in its Saturday-to-Wednesday twice-daily broadcasts, prompted women from the UAE to voice their opposition on online forums including Oprah.com and the social networking site, Facebook.

In addition to pointing out that health care was not free for everyone, many complained that the episode made Emirati women look dependent, and that Dr Hamdan’s comments about the abaya were misleading.

Fatima al Dhaheri, 25, an Emirati investment analyst at Abu Dhabi Investment Council who saw the programme, believed the issue was with the way Dr Hamdan’s comments were portrayed.

“The problem with the segment is that it was not based on facts, it was based on her own thoughts,” she said.

Fatima Amer, a 25-year-old Emirati financial analyst at the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, agreed: “She should have said, ‘I don’t pay’.”

A less than united front

This weekend there is to be a demonstration in London organised by the Islamists of the re-formed al Muhajiroun calling for sharia law to be enforced in Britain.

When they heard about this, various moderate, anti-Islamist Muslims started suggesting on Facebook and elsewhere that a counter demonstration be held.

Within a short space of time, the moderate anti-Islamist British Muslims for a Secular Democracy decided to hold a counter-protest of their own. It was great news that reformist British Muslims were now getting it together to oppose the Islamists like this. But then things got a little bit complicated.

Alarmed by the threat that such moderate Muslims pose to the Islamist stranglehold over public discourse, the Muslim Brotherhood moved swiftly to try to neutralise them.

Thus a surprising article appeared on the Guardian’s Comment is free blog by Inayat Bunglawala of the Brotherhood’s British arm, the Muslim Council of Britain – which, having been briefly given the cold shoulder by the former Communities Secretary Hazel Blears who is one of the very few British politicians to understand the threat that it poses, has now disgracefully been welcomed back into the government fold.

Bunglawala called for Muslims to mount a counter-demonstration against al Muhajiroun in support of

a multi-faith, multicultural democracy where people are free to practise their faith or not to if they so choose.

How heart-warming!

This is the same Bunglawala who, according to a report by the Institute for the Study of Islam and Christianity, Islam in Britain, wrote that the genocidal Hamas, whose aim is to eradicate Israel and all Jews from the face of the earth and impose an Islamic theocracy in the Middle East, was an

authentically Islamic movement

and

a source of comfort for Muslims all over the world.

Facebook Group: "Muslims support Fathima Rifqa Bary's religious freedom too!"

We Condemn Honor Killing
Honor killings are NOT Islamic--that being said, no religion allows slander or injustice either. Please stop this smear campaign against the Bary family and against Islam as a whole. If they were as intolerant and oppressive as she claims then she wouldnt be allowed to be a cheerleader and wear the things she does. There has to be something more to this story.

Islam teaches that Christians and Jews and Muslims are ALL "people of the book" and therefore righteous. Muslims also believe if you take a life it is as if you murdered all of humanity and you will be punished accordingly. MUSLIMS ARE NOT CRUEL BARBARIANS TRYING TO MURDER CHRISTIANS! We value the Torah and the Bible along with our own Holy Book. Furthermore, chapter 2 of the Quran states that religion is NOT compulsory---so we are not allowed to force anyone to believe in anything.

If this story had been a Christian kid converting to Islam the media wouldve spun it around in favor of the parents. Please show us a FRACTION of the tolerance and respect that you expect from us! Thank you and God bless you ALL!

Anti-Muslim extremists plan Scots protest

By David Leask
ANTI-MUSLIM extremists linked with serious unrest in England are planning a major demonstration in Glasgow, it has emerged.

The English Defence League (EDF) aims to take to the streets of Scotland's biggest city on Saturday, 14 November, sparking major safety concerns among police and council insiders.

The organisation, which denies it is racist and insists it is only against Islamic militants rather than all Muslims, has set up a wing north of the Border called the Scottish Defence League.

An EDF rally in Birmingham erupted into violence this summer, prompting scores of arrests. Supporters are understood to have links with far-right groups and football hooligans. Some have been seen making Nazi salutes.

Communities Secretary John Denham this month raised fears of a return to 1930s fascism when he compared some far-right groups to Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts. The Scotsman understands that the EDF – or its purported Scottish wing – has still to ask for permission to march through Glasgow.

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council yesterday said "any application would be considered". However, senior officials at the authority, which has the power to ban marches on police safety advice, would be keen to block any demonstration that is deemed likely to lead to violence.

Strathclyde Police were unavailable for comment last night.

Some city leaders fear that the EDF could spark counter-demonstrations from Glasgow's still highly mobilised left groups and from city Islamists.

"We think these guys (the EDF] want to see pictures of people in Union Jack T-shirts with blood on their heads," said one.

"We are not going to let that happen in Glasgow.

"If they are coming up here looking for a fight – there is no way they are going to get it. The police know how to deal with these guys."

The Glasgow demonstration was announced on the Facebook website this week. Some 132 people have already said they will attend.

The time and place of the rally have still to be settled. Any attempt to approach sensitive areas, such as Glasgow Central Mosque, would present serious public safety problems, city insiders confirmed to The Scotsman.

EDF supporters south of the Border have been seen parading with placards against the building of new mosques.

The Scottish Islamic Foundation yesterday said it would be organising a public meeting within the next seven days to work out how it should respond to extreme anti-Islamic groups crossing the border.

The group's chairman, Asif Ahmed, said: "This is time for Scotland to once again show we will not be divided by extremists. We have faced worse and come through it.

"The last time Glasgow was tested was at the 2007 airport attack. What we saw then was all strands of society coming together for a remarkable show of solidarity in George Square.

"We'll be working again to make sure that the numbers peacefully opposing extremism will far outstrip that of the haters."

Manchester City Council has sought help from the Home Office to find ways of banning an EDF march scheduled for its streets next month.

Facebook used to organise Auburn racial riot - police

A RIOT by Muslim youths in the western Sydney suburb of Auburn last week was organised via Facebook, police believe.

The troublemakers used the social networking site to flash up inflammatory references to police and rally their friends for a confrontation.

One update identified police as "non-believers" who were raiding a "brother's home".

More than 150 people gathered in Cumberland Road, Auburn, on Tuesday night, forcing police to call in 100 officers, the riot squad and a helicopter.

The tense stand-off came after Middle Eastern organised crime squad police raided four homes.

Opposition Police spokesman Mike Gallacher's office revealed one of the Facebook updates read: "Kefeirs raiding brother's house, everyone get down hier (sic)!!"

A spokesman for Mr Gallacher said the term used to describe the police had become a slang Arabic term used to describe non-believers.

"I don't think it is an intentional move by people to get around the law -- it is the way a lot of younger people contact one another and it would appear there is a loophole in the law," he said.

"Using Facebook and Twitter and modern technology gives a quicker way of getting messages out to a larger number of people."

Detective Chief Superintendent Ken McKay said the Middle Eastern organised crime squad was looking into phone communication and would expand the investigation to Facebook.

He said regardless of the laws covering the means of communication, the police could still identify and pursue those responsible for Facebook messages.

"If you incite a riot it doesn't matter by which means, how you do that is somewhat irrelevant," Supt McKay said.

And he said he was concerned by the general lack of respect young people from all backgrounds have for authority.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for Attorney-General John Hatzistergos also said current laws could be applied, adding: "There is a range of serious offences where people call on others to riot or commit other offences via mobile phone or the internet."

Anti-Semitism Thrives on Dutch Social Media

Israel
By Nissan Ratzlav-Katz

Virulent anti-Semitic content thrives on a Dutch social media website used by nearly half of the entire population of Holland, according to a report released Thursday. Yet, many of the online instigators appear to be Dutch-speaking Arabs.

The report, produced by investigators from Yad VaShem, the Dutch-language Israel Facts Monitorgroup and the Network on Anti-Semitism based in the Netherlands, was provided to all the political parties in the Netherlands, as well as to members of the Dutch government. As the Internet is becoming an increasingly important and influential facet of Dutch life, the investigators are hoping to provide some insight into how it is used in the Netherlands to propagate anti-Israel rhetoric and anti-Semitic views.

"Anti-Semitism and hatred toward Israel containing anti-Semitic content is a common phenomenon on the Internet in the Netherlands," the report declares. "Remarks which were unthinkable only ten years ago are now common practice and do not seem to raise eyebrows anymore." In fact, after three months of regular monitoring, the investigators concluded, "The climate in which the public debate about Israel and the Middle East conflict is taking place on the Internet is deteriorating."

Titled "Anti-Israel and anti-Semitic activity on the Internet in the Netherlands", the report presents examples and trends of anti-Israel blood libels, violent anti-Semitic hate speech and, simultaneously, Holocaust denial, smearing Israelis as Nazis, and calls for returning Jews to the death camps. For the purpose of gauging online Dutch social media, the investigators monitored closed and open groups on the Facebook-like Hyves social networking website, which can claim around nine million members, and the talkback section of de Volkskrant, one of the leading newspapers in Holland.

Open Praise for Suicide Bombings
Among the public groups on Hyves, there are 35 groups that the report defines as either "pro-Palestinian" or "anti-Israel". The majority of these groups, according to the investigators, "are run by young Arab immigrants or descendants of Arab immigrants living in the Netherlands." While the most popular anti-Israel or pro-Palestinian groups have several thousands of members, the largest pro-Israel Hyves forum has 900. Read more here ...

Genocidal Jews on Facebook
Are They Above Reproach? - Updated

Facebook
Who says Jews cannot behave like Nazis?

A couple of days ago, one of MASH blog contributors, Susan P., posted the following article: "Calling Jews 'Nazis' may be criminalised." While I find it abhorrent to compare the Jews (or any other religious group for that matter) to the Nazis, this is a Free Speech issue. Comparing the Jews (in general) to Nazis should be ostracized, not criminalized. And, as reality shows, some of the Jews do behave like the Nazis.

Today I posted an article by The Investigative Project, "Hizb ut-Tahrir: Shariah Takes Precedence over U.S. Constitution," on Facebook. Shortly thereafter, the article was reposted by another Facebook user, "Yehuda Israeli Pride." Yet another Facebook user, "Nick Deloite," made the following comment: "Nuke all muslim ..." The next comment by "Yehuda Israeli Pride" read: "Agreed!" Unfortunately, by the time I made the screenshot, "Yehuda Israeli Pride" had deleted his/her comment, so you're gonna have to take my word for it.

It is safe to assume that both of the aforementioned Facebook users are Jewish since one has a Star of David on his/her account image plus the name "Yehuda Israeli Pride" and the other has an Israeli flag on his account image.

So what do we have here? We have a case of two Jews calling for genocide of Muslims. Well, technically one is calling for the genocide and the other enthusiastically agrees. Do they exhibit Nazi-like behavior? Absolutely! Should I be criminalized or even ostracized for calling them Nazis? Are the Jews above reproach? I really don't think so. And I would like to see this abhorrent behavior condemned by other Jews!

K.M.

Update:
Two prominent Jews, Reut Rory Cohen and Allyson Rowen Taylor have come out with condemnation of genocidal statements by Jewish bigots. I only wish that prominent Muslims were as willing to condemn genocidal statements emanating from Muslim bigots.

Journalist inviting friends to flogging

Seeks to raise opposition to law that discriminates against women

July 20 | By Bob Unruh

A Quran

Facebook is one of the top social networking sites, and probably sees millions of invitations posted each day, but one put up by a journalist in the Sudan probably is unique: It invites her friends and the public to her flogging.

According to a report today from the Middle East Media Research Institute, Lubna Ahmad Hussein posted the invitation to her friends and supporters to "stir up a scandal around her case."

As WND reported just days ago, she was among the women – including many Christians – arrested and flogged for wearing trousers.

The MEMRI report said Hussein hopes the case "will shed light on Clause 152 of Sudan's 1991 criminal law."

"This is not a matter of a personal attack against me as a journalist, nor of preserving my personal dignity. Far from it … The issue has taken on a different character, [and I call] on the public to be [my] witness and [to judge for themselves whether this incident] is a disgrace for me or for the public order police. You will decide after hearing the charges and the prosecution witnesses, rather than [only] my side of the story," MEMRI reported the posting said.

A variety of Arabic-language reports documented the invitation.

"My case is the same as that of 10 young women flogged that day, as well as of dozens, hundreds, and maybe thousands others flogged in the public order courts because of their dress, day after day, month after month, and year after year," she wrote. "They emerge from there dejected, because society does not believe them – indeed, it will never believe that a girl can be flogged only because of the way she dresses.

Learn the true story about Islamic punishment. Get "The Stoning of Soraya M."

"The result [of this punishment] is [society's] death sentence against the girl's family; for her parents it means an attack of diabetes, hypertension, or heart failure. [Just think of] the girl's emotional state, and the disgrace that will follow her for the rest of her life – and all because [she wore] trousers. The number [of victims] will keep growing, because society refuses to believe that a girl or woman can be flogged because of what she wears," MEMRI reported.

The organization reported that such abuse of women was thrust into the national debate by the arrests of the women. Ten of those accused already have been given 10 lashes while three other cases, including the one against Hussein, await resolution.

"Incidents of this kind are widespread in Sudan and are usually disregarded by the local and global media," the organization said. "Hussein, however, decided to bring the issue to the attention of the public, and printed 500 invitations to her court proceedings and to the flogging to which she would likely be sentenced, distributing them to journalists and friends.

"In an interview with Al-Arabiyya TV, Hussein explained that she had given out the invitations because otherwise no one would believe that she was to be flogged for wearing ordinary clothes," MEMRI reported.

"I wanted the punishment to be executed in the presence of observers, so that they see for themselves why I was being flogged," she told Al-Arabiyya.

Websites respond to heavy traffic with Farsi translation

Farsi

Murad Ahmed | June 22,

GOOGLE and Facebook have set up Farsi versions of their websites and services, saying that they were responding to the importance of the internet as a communications tool for Iranians during the turmoil in the country.

The web has made it possible for many Iranians to communicate since last week's disputed election, and the international media have used services such as Twitter and YouTube in their reporting of the protests.

Recognising the internet's role in events in Iran, Google added a Farsi dictionary to Google Translate, its online translation service. It will enable millions of Iranians who are trying to get their message out to the wider world to translate any text, from blog posts to Twitter messages, from Farsi into English and vice versa.

A Google spokesman said: "This is not a political statement. There's a huge amount of interest in the events in Iran and we hope this tool will improve access to information for people inside and outside the country."

The company said that it was working to provide Farsi translations for the other 40 languages in the service.

Facebook hastily launched a Farsi version of its website. The website had appealed to its Farsi-speaking users around the world to help.

A Facebook spokesman said: "We could not have made this happen so quickly without the more than 400 Persian speakers who submitted thousands of individual translations of the site."

Despite attempts by the authorities to control the flow of information from Iran, those angry at the disputed election results have been finding ways around the virtual barriers. Until now, Twitter and YouTube have been central in the protesters' efforts to communicate with each other and with the wider world.

Tweets -- messages sent through Twitter -- have been used to organise the time and place of protests. At the request of the US State Department, Twitter delayed shutting down the site for maintenance last week to ensure that Iranians could continue to use the service.

YouTube, the video-sharing website, appears to have been blocked by Iran's censors. Google, which runs the site, reported that traffic from within Iran to the site was down by 90 per cent since the protests began.

However, this has not prevented thousands of videos pouring on to the site, showing skirmishes and the enormous scale of the protests. It is believed that most of these videos have been emailed from Iran to people outside the country, who have then loaded them on to YouTube.

Early reports from Tehran after the announcement of the election results suggested that the authorities had tried to interfere with, or had disabled, access to many websites and had blocked text messaging. But hackers are helping to keep web channels open and have taken down President Mahmud Ahmadinejad's website.

Iran is a computer-literate society, with an estimated 700,000 bloggers, making Farsi the second-most popular language on the web after English.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards issue warning to media

IRGC
By ALI AKBAR DAREINI | June 17 | TEHRAN

Iran's most powerful military force is warning online media of a crackdown over their coverage of the country's election crisis.

The Revolutionary Guards, an elite body answering to the supreme leader, says Iranian Web sites and bloggers must remove any materials that "create tension" or face legal action.

It is the Guards' first public statement since the crisis erupted following the presidential election last Friday.

Iranian reformist Web sites as well as blogs and Western Web sites like Facebook and Twitter have been vital conduits for Iranians to inform the world about protests over the declaration of election victory for hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The government barred foreign media Tuesday from leaving their offices to report on the street protests.
