Meet Sweden's Muslim Minister: She wants to ban girls from wearing the hijab

THE latest media darling of Scandinavian politics is not only black, beautiful and Muslim; she is also firmly against the wearing of the veil.
Nyamko Sabuni, 37, has caused a storm as Sweden’s new integration and equality minister by arguing that all girls should be checked for evidence of female circumcision; arranged marriages should be criminalised; religious schools should receive no state funding; and immigrants should learn Swedish and find a job.
Supporters of the centre-right government that came to power last month believe that her bold rejection of cultural diversity may make her a force for change across Europe. Her critics are calling her a hardliner and even an Islamophobe.
“I am neither,” she said in an interview. “My aim is to integrate immigrants. One is to ensure they grow up just as any other child in Sweden would.”
Sabuni believes all immigrants must try to become proficient in Swedish — just as she did when she arrived from Africa aged 12 — rather than alienating locals.
“Language and jobs are the two most crucial things for integration,” she said. “If you want to become a Swedish citizen, we think you should have some basic knowledge of Swedish.”
An elegant, vivacious woman who uses subtle make-up and wears soft clothes in pastel shades and tight woollen sweaters, she argues for a total ban on veils being worn by girls under the age of consent, which is 15 in Sweden.

Sabuni was born in Burundi. Her father was a political dissident who was in prison during much of her early childhood. In 1980 he was granted asylum in Sweden. The next year his wife and six children joined him and they settled near Stockholm.
Sabuni read law at Uppsala University, Sweden’s equivalent of Oxbridge, and became a public relations consultant. Her husband, who works in the travel industry and runs their home in Stockholm, took paternity leave when their twin boys, now five, were born.
In Sweden she is best known for her suggestion that adolescent girls should have compulsory examinations to make sure they have not been subjected to genital mutilation. “It would enable us to prosecute people carrying out the practice,” she said.
According to Sabuni, many politicians have shied away from talking about the need for assimilation rather than multi-culturalism: “I am one of the few who dares to speak out. Sadly, some members of the Muslim community feel picked on.”
Muslim groups in Sweden are already organising a petition to have her removed from government. “I regret that Muslims feel I am a threat to them,” she said. “Everybody has a right to practise their religion, but I will never accept religious oppression. And I represent the whole of society, not just the Muslims.”
Despite her ascendancy in her adopted country, Sabuni says that Sweden, where immigrants — half of them Muslims — make up nearly 12% of the population, has been only moderately successful at integration: “We have a whole underclass of people who don’t have jobs, who don’t speak the language and who are living on the fringes of society.”
Although fighting discrimination is one of her stated aims, she effectively closed down a Centre Against Racism last week by withdrawing its £400,000 state funding. By chance, the centre was run by her uncle.
“It didn’t achieve its aims,” she said bluntly. “It simply didn’t do what it set out to do, so I had to pull the plug. My uncle is a good and a competent man, but a whole institute can’t be run by one man. He understands that I have to do my job.”
Other ministers appointed by Fredrik Reinfeldt, the prime minister, are more concerned about their jobs. Since he took over on September 17, two ministers have resigned in a series of minor scandals involving unpaid television licences and black-market domestic help, and two more are under pressure to go.
Should Reinfeldt’s government fall, Sabuni would be willing to step into his shoes. On a TV show three years ago she declared that she would become Sweden’s first female prime minister. “I stand by that,” she said. “It’s not something I think about on a daily basis but, if I’m in politics, the ultimate aim has to be to become prime minister.”

Increasingly, this bizarre practise of gender apartheid at weddings is being enforced on Western Muslims by the Mosque establishment that takes its cues from Saudi Arabia, Iran or the Muslim Brotherhood. I got married in Pakistan 35 years ago and even then, in that Islamic country, men and women were not segregated. Now, this backward Saudi custom has been imported in the UK, Canada and other Western countries. Some Muslim weddings have become joyless occasions where the atmosphere is more suitable for a funerals, not fun. Good for this British MP. I wish all politicians put there foot down and boycott all attempts to relegate women to second class humans and depict them as sexual objects in the name of religion and multiculturalism. La raison ? Cette fois ce sont les mères et les filles de l'Iran qui se sont rebellées contre la République islamique d'Iran et qui sont descendues dans les rues pour mener les hommes. Pendant 30 ans, une nation entière a connu l'emprisonnement, la torture, le meurtre et, à l’insu du monde, le viol institutionnalisé de ses filles - et ce, au nom de l'islam. Aucune autre dictature, pas même les Saoudiens, n’a utilisé le viol comme instrument de domination comme l’ont fait les ayatollahs iraniens. Paradoxalement, le tout a été maquillé en acte de piété et de religiosité. Cette vérité commence à émerger au grand jour. Un membre de la milice iranienne des Basiji aurait parlé à Sabina Amidi, une journaliste indépendante pour le Jerusalem Post, de sa participation forcée au viol de jeunes iraniennes avant leur exécution. Tarek Fatah: Muslim Double Standards

This week, more than 100 Muslims have died and thousands more have been arrested in China. Yet not a peep of protest has been heard on the streets of Cairo, Karachi or Tehran. Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, it seems, is too busy imprisoning and herding Iranian Muslims to jail to hear the outcry in Xinxiang, while Egyptian religious leader, Sheik Yusuf al-Qaradawi, has also ignored the persecution of the Uighurs. China, after all is the trusted ally of the Arab world.
This is not the first time the so-called ummah has shrugged off the massacre of fellow Muslims. During Kosovo’s war with Serbia, Islamists depicted Kosovar Muslims not as victims, but as American agents. More recently, the genocide of Darfuri Black Muslims at the hands of the Arab janjaweed militia and the Sudanese government has passed unnoticed by the larger Islamic world.
My friend, the Egyptian-American journalist Mona Eltahawy explained this phenomenon: “Many Muslims only pay attention when America and Israel behave badly.” If Israel invaded western China, she mused, maybe the rest of the Muslim world would wake up, cry foul and protest.
It is worth noting that on Monday, thousands of Egyptians did come out in Alexandria to protest … but not against the Chinese government. Their anger was directed at Germany, where a racist hate-monger had murdered Marwa Sherbini, an Egyptian woman (a crime that I wrote about in Wednesday’s Post).
The Muslim demonstrators in Alexandria shouted a bizarre chant to express their anger. “There is no god but God, and the Germans are the enemies of God,” they screamed. The chant is a twist on the Muslim oath and declaration of faith, “There is no god, but God and Muhammad is the messenger of God.”
But where were these protesters when, on Dec. 30, 2005, hundreds of Egyptian riot police stormed through a makeshift refugee camp in central Cairo to clear it of 2,500 Darfuri Muslims, beating to death 28 people, among them women and children? Were those lives less valuable than the life of Marwa Sherbini?
Yesterday in the Post, I wrote that Sherbini’s “murder will prove to be manna from heaven” for the Islamists. They, I argued, would use it “as the ultimate symbol of the West’s ‘war against Islam,’ and to fuel the propaganda that Muslims are victims.”Unfortunately, I was correct. Within hours, the tragedy was being held up as symbolic of the West’s hostility toward Muslims. The Canadian Islamic Congress led the charge, accusing the Canadian media of “intentionally” ignoring the news of Sherbini’s murder. Neda Agha-Soltan was shot dead in Tehran by the Iranian government-backed militia. No one protested her death in the Muslim world outside Iran, nor asked for her killer to be brought to justice. Why? Perhaps because her killer was a fellow Muslim.
The question remains: Will Muslims come out to the streets and chant, “There is no god but God and the Iranian government is the enemy of God”? Il testo che segue è un estratto rivisto e corretto di un Discorso pronunciato la settimana passata alla Conferenza Durban 2, a Ginevra.
Mentre mi rivolgo a voi, sono profondamente deluso che la mia collega, Milly Nsekalije, sfuggita al Massacro dei tutsi in Rwanda nel 1994, sia stata impossibilitata a condividere la sua storia con voi tutti. Ragione: agli occhi di certi, è impossibile che lei sia stata vittima di Genocidio, poiché lei è una tutsi non al 100%.
Cosa pensare dello stato del Razzismo nel nostro Mondo dal momento che le stesse vittime di un Genocidio praticano l’esclusione le une delle altre sulla base di una pretesa Purezza di sangue maggiore e in base all’Origine etnica?
E c’è di peggio che l’esclusione dall’Avvenimento del giorno: il fatto che questa esclusione abbia avuto luogo nel quadro di una Conferenza avente per scopo di combattere il Razzismo. Come si vede, abbiamo sovvertito la nozione di Razzismo.
Il Razzismo è più di una divisione fra bianchi e neri, è pure un cancro che pervade le Relazioni fra gente di colore – delle persone che condividono spesso la stessa Religione ma che hanno dei colori di pelle differenti, più o meno bruni o neri.
Questo Razzismo interno, che divora dall’intero i popoli del mondo in via di Sviluppo in Asia e in Africa, è troppo spesso scartato dalle Discussioni sul Razzismo.
Questo pomeriggio, vorrei attirare un po’ l’attenzione su due Genocidi, uno che ha avuto luogo nel 1970/’71, in quello che è ora il Bangladesh, e l’altro che continua nel momento stesso in cui parlo nella regione del Darfur, in Sudan. In questi due casi, la radice del problema si situa presso un Gruppo di islamici che si percepiscono come razzialmente superiori alle loro vittime, comunque loro stesse islamiche. In questi due casi, la Dottrina della Superiorità razziale e la pratica del Razzismo istituzionale, non sono mai state messe in discussione, nemmeno dopo che le orribili conseguenze di questo Razzismo sono state viste da tutti.
Nel 1970, il Paese dove sono nato, il Pakistan, era diviso in due: una parte orientale, Oggi conosciuta sotto il nome di Bangladesh, e una parte occidentale, che è sopravvissuta a una Guerra ulteriore con l’India, che ha dato vita al Pakistan odierno.
Il Pakistan orientale era abitato dai bengalesi, una popolazione a pelle scura che costituiva la Maggioranza, che era messa sotto il Dominio di una Minoranza più chiara, venuta da quello che era il Pakistan occidentale. Nel corso dei primi 25 anni di Storia del Paese, la descrizione razzista dei bengalesi a pelle scura, come Esseri inferiori e incapaci, è divenuta un Dogma, mai rimesso in causa presso la Minoranza dominante. La Cultura dei bengalesi di pelle scura era descritta come non-islamica e influenzata dall’Hinduismo. Ci si prendeva gioco della loro Musica, della loro Cucina, del loro Abbigliamento, e la loro Lingua era proibita, ciò che ha condotto a numerose Proteste e a dei morti nel 1952.
Nel 1970, dopo aver sofferto 25 anni sotto la Dominazione del Pakistan occidentale, la popolazione del Pakistan orientale ha votato per un Partito installato nella sua Regione, e ha ottenuto una netta Maggioranza nel Parlamento nazionale del Paese. Ma poiché la visione razzista che considerava i bengalesi come incapaci di dirigere il Paese, o come traditori della Minoranza a pelle chiara del Pakistan occidentale, è stata avviato un Intervento militare, che ha dato luogo a numerosi Massacri su un periodo di 10 mesi.
Il Massacro dei bengalesi da parte dell’Esercito del Pakistan occidentale è finito solo con l’Intervento dell’India che aveva vinto le Forze armate pakistane, ma centinaia d’Intellettuali, Professori, Poeti, Autori e Pittori bengalesi erano già stati fucilati e massacrati. In totale, 1 milione di islamici erano stati uccisi da altri islamici in una frenesia d’Odio contraria agli Insegnamenti dell’Islam [vedi nota 1.1.] e del Profeta Mohammad [vedi nota 1.1.], di cui l’Autorità religiosa è stata invocata dall’Esercito pakistano.
Si sarebbe potuto sperare che questo Genocidio servisse da messa in guardia. Ma la triste constatazione è che il Razzismo è persistito dappertutto nel mondo islamico nel corso degli anni successivi. Ciò nonostante, tutto il Mondo lo nega, e non soltanto diversi Governi e Nazioni islamici, ma pure numerose Organizzazioni Non Governative e numerosi Gruppi della Società civile.
In Sudan, le Milizie di janjawid e il Governo arabo di Khartum hanno provocato la messa a morte di 500 mila islamici del Darfur, il cui solo sbaglio è d’essere neri e dunque considerati come inferiori dalle Classi dirigenti del Paese.
Il cattivo trattamento dei neri islamici da parte di chi si sente superiore in ragione della loro pelle più chiara, si ritrova lungo tutto il corso della Storia. Solo in Medio Oriente ci si può permettere di dire a un nero « Ya Abdi », che vuol dire « Tu, schiavo ».
Solo la Lega araba poteva scegliere di sostenere il Presidente del Sudan, un uomo incolpato dalla Corte Penale Internazionale per la sua Campagna omicida in Darfur.
È ora d’abbondonare la nozione da Medioevo di un’Inferiorità degli islamici non-arabi rispetto agli islamici arabi. I Paesi arabi e i Dirigenti delle ONG arabe devono denunciare questa Dottrina che conduce alla Discriminazione contro gli islamici a pelle scura nei Paesi a Governo arabo, tanto lontani fra loro come Dubai e il Darfur.
Se siamo incapaci d’autorizzare ad una donna di parlare qui, perché è di sangue misto, allora tutto quello che posso dire è che, per riprendere le parole di Robert Frost: ‘La strada è ancora lunga prima di poterci riposare’.

La morte tragica di un'adolescente di Mississauga in Ontario, presumibilmente per mano del suo proprio padre islamico tradizionalista, ha causato delle ondate di shock nel Mondo. I canadesi sono giustificati se sollevano delle preoccupazioni in merito al sapere se ciò è un segno dell’aumento del Fondamentalismo islamico nel loro proprio vicinato.
Aqsa Parvez, un’adolescente di 16 anni ribollente di vita, amata dai suoi amici e compagni alla Applewood Heights Secondary School, cercava solo di essere sé stessa, aspirava solo ad un’Adolescenza normale in mezzo al ricco mosaico culturale canadese. Suo padre è stato accusato di omicidio, e suo fratello d’ostruzionismo, tanto è vero che una giovane vita è stata soffocata, probabilmente in nome dell’onore e dell’Islam.
Gli islamici radicali si considerano come responsabili, in ultima analisi, del comportamento delle donne. Questa prospettiva è radicata nell’Ethos medioevale, che tratta le donne come delle non-persone, incapaci di decidere per proprio conto quello che devono indossare, dove devono andare, e quello che devono realizzare nella vita. Se il loro comportamento è considerato come contravvenente a questa prospettiva religiosa austera, esse sono sempre sottomesse a dei brutti trattamenti.
L’hijab in particolare è divenuto una questione spinosa nelle famiglie islamiche. È stato elevato ad una sorta di “sesto pilastro dell’Islam” presso le Sette militanti. Le giovani adolescenti si fanno spesso predicare in merito alle Virtù dell’hijab, da parte dei membri della loro famiglia. Una volta che hanno raggiunto la Pubertà, conformarsi è considerata come un’esigenza religiosa innegoziabile.
Ciò nonostante, niente di tutto ciò è richiesto nel Corano. Il Corano, parlando in generale della modestia nell’abbigliamento e nell’atteggiamento, non fornisce alcun dettaglio su questa Modestia. Le Scritture lasciano pure spazio all’inosservanza dei Decreti religiosi se le circostanze sono inadatte alla loro osservanza.
Il Corano esorta alla Compassione verso i genitori, ai Custodi e ai Tutori delle giovani donne. Ciò nonostante, alcune famiglie danno piuttosto prova di conformarsi strettamente alla Dottrina o al Dogma, che a sua volta conduce alla Violenza, al Settarismo e all’Intolleranza verso altri modi d’intendere la Fede. Ci sono molte discussioni nella Società canadese sulle Libertà religiose di coloro che scelgono di indossare l’hijab. Sentiamo relativamente poche cose sull’Oppressione delle giovani donne che fanno scelte diverse. E la loro Oppressione in seno alla loro stessa Comunità, o persino in seno alla loro propria famiglia, è raramente formulata come una questione di Diritti umani.
Se sono riconosciuti colpevoli, il padre di Aqsa e il fratello devono ricevere le pene più severe previste dalla Legge. Quanto ai membri del Clero e agli imam delle moschee del Canada che denigrano costantemente le giovani donne che rifiutano di portare l’hijab e le rigettano per “minaccia all’Islam”, hanno bisogno di riflettere sulle conseguenze dei loro sermoni.
Prendiamo, a titolo d’esempio, la moschea di Montréal, che ha recentemente pubblicato sul suo Sito un avvertimento del tipo che se le giovani donne levano il loro velo, essere potrebbero finire per essere violentate ed avere dei “figli illegittimi”. Altri rischi proferiti comprendono “lo stress, l’insicurezza e il sospetto nella mente dei mariti” e “il fomentare i giovani a deviare verso il cammino della Lussuria”.
Come se la minaccia dello stupro e la paura dei figli illegittimi fosse insufficiente, si insegna a delle pre-adolescenti che se levano il loro velo, esse cessano di essere delle islamiche.
« Ritirando il vostro velo, avete distrutto la vostra Fede. Islam significa Sottomissione ad AlLah in tutte le nostre azioni. » Non c’è niente da stupirsi se le giovani donne canadesi si ritirano dai Tornei sportivi piuttosto che ritirare il loro hijab.
Gli islamici hanno bisogno di alzarsi contro questo tipo di Ricatto affettivo e religioso, da parte di imam che propagano i Programmi dell’Arabia Saudita [Islam sunnita] e dell’Iran [Islam shiita] in Canada.
La giovane Aqsa Pervez non tornerà mai più in vita. Ma noi possiamo almeno, in sua memoria, lanciare una sfida a coloro il cui messaggio conduce alla Rabbia e alla Follìa.

The following is an edited excerpt of a speech delivered last week at the Durban Review Conference (Durban II) in Geneva, Switzerland.
As I speak to you, I am deeply disappointed that my colleague Milly Nsekalije, a survivor of the 1994 massacre of Rwandan Tutsis, could not share her story with all of you. The reason: In the eyes of some, she cannot have been a victim of the genocide since she is not 100% Tutsi.
What does it say about the state of racism in our world when the victims of a genocide practise exclusion on the basis of the so-called purity of blood lines and ethnicity?
Worse than her exclusion from to-day's event is the fact that it has happened at a conference meant to combat racism. As this shows, we have turned the concept of racism upside down.
Racism operates not just as a black/ white divide, but also as a cancer that affects relations between people of colour -- people who often share the same religion, but have different shades of brown or black skin.
This internalized racism, which devours the people of the developing world in Asia and Africa from within, is too often left out of the discussion of racism.
This afternoon, I would like to shed some light on two genocides -- one happened in 1970-71 in what is now Bangladesh; and the other that continues as I speak in the Darfur region of Sudan. In both instances, the root of the problem lay with one group of Muslims feeling they were racially superior to their victims, who also happened to be Muslim. In both cases, the doctrine of racial superiority and the practice of institutional racism went unchallenged, even after the horrible consequences of such racism were evident and for all to see.
In 1970, my country of birth, Pakistan, was divided in two: an eastern part that is today known as Bangladesh and the western rump, which survived a subsequent war with India as the state we now know as Pakistan.
East Pakistan was inhabited by the darker-skinned Bengali people who happened to be the majority community of Pakistan, but found themselves ruled by a lighter-skinned minority from what was known as West Pakistan.
In the first 25 years of the country's history, the racist depiction of the darker-skinned Bengalis as an inferior and incapable people became the unquestioned dogma among the ruling minority. The darker-skinned Bengalis' culture was portrayed as un-Islamic and influenced by Hinduism. Their music, cuisine and attire were mocked, and their language was banned, leading to widespread protests and deaths in 1952.
In 1970, after suffering under the minority rule of West Pakistan for 25 years, the people of East Pakistan voted to elect a party based in their region, and gained a clear majority in the country's national parliament.
However, the racist view that Bengali people were incapable of ruling the country, or that they were traitors to the fair-skinned minority of West Pakistan, led to a military intervention and widespread massacres over a 10-month period.
The killing of the Bengali people by the West Pakistan army stopped only when India intervened and defeated the Pakistan Armed Forces, but not before hundreds of Bengali intellectuals, professors, poets, authors, musicians and painters were rounded up and massacred. All told, one million Muslims were murdered by fellow Muslims in an orgy of hate that defied the teachings of Islam and the Prophet Muhammad, whose religious authority was being invoked by the Pakistan army.
One would have hoped that this genocide would have served as a cautionary tale. But the sad fact is that racism in the Islamic world has remained ubiquitous in the years that followed. Yet there is near universal denial about it, not just among the governments of Muslim nations, but also among many NGOs and civil society groups.
In Sudan, the Arab janjaweed militia and the Arab government in Khartoum have caused the murder of 500,000 Darfuri Muslims whose only fault is that they are black and thus considered inferior to the ruling classes of that country.
The mistreatment of black Muslims by those who feel they are superior because of their lighter skin colour has gone on throughout history. Only in the Middle East can one get away with addressing a black man as Ya Abdi, which translates as "Oh you slave."
Only the Arab League would choose to embrace Sudan's President, a man charged by the International Criminal Court for his murderous campaign in Darfur.
It is time that the medieval belief in the inferiority of non-Arab Muslims to Arab Muslims is laid to rest. Arab countries and leaders of Arab NGOs must denounce this doctrine, which has led to discrimination against darker-skinned Muslims by Arab governments in countries as far apart as Dubai and Darfur.

Published: Wednesday, December 12, 2007 The tragic death of a Mississauga, Ont., teenage girl -- allegedly at the hands of her own traditionally minded Muslim father -- has sent shock waves across the world. Canadians are justified in raising concerns as to whether this is a sign of the rise of Islamic fundamentalism in their own backyard.
Aqsa Parvez, a sprightly 16-year-old, beloved of her friends and peers at Applewood Heights Secondary School, was only trying to be herself, was only wishing for a normal adolescence amid Canada's rich cultural mosaic. Her father has now been charged with murder, and his son with obstruction, while a young life has been snuffed out -- likely in the name of honour and Islam.
Radical Muslim men consider themselves ultimately responsible for the conduct of the womenfolk. This outlook is rooted in a medieval ethos that treats women as nonpersons, unable to decide for themselves what they should wear, where they must go and what they must accomplish in life. If their conduct is seen as contravening this austere religious outlook, they are invariably subjected to abuse.
The hijab in particular has become a thorny issue among Muslim families. It has been elevated as a sort of "sixth pillar of Islam" among militant sects. Young teenage girls are often lectured over the virtues of the hijab by their family members. Once they hit puberty, compliance is deemed a non-negotiable religious requirement.

In their view, the liberal and left-leaning Canadian intelligentsia is wracked by guilt and contempt for their own intellectual heritage and they do all they can to stand up for radical Islamists whose agendas are more closely linked to the Muslim Brotherhood than to Canadian freedoms. They, on other hand, the “good-looking” Muslims whom the mainstream media generally ignore, stand with John Stuart Mill in upholding individual freedom and traditional values associated with an earlier Canada. So spoke Tarek Fatah and Salim Mansur at a recent lunchtime lecture at the offices of the Ontario Bar Association, sponsored by the Speakers Action Group and the Canadian Jewish Civil Rights Association, and in interviews with The CJN. Fatah is founder of the Muslim Canadian Congress and author of Chasing a Mirage: The Tragic Illusion of an Islamic State. Mansur is a professor of political science at the University of Western Ontario and a syndicated columnist. Fatah contrasted the influence of “good looking” Muslims like himself – by which he meant those who share Enlightenment values and have integrated into Canadian society – to “ugly” Muslims who dress as in Saudi Arabia, speak with heavy accents, promote jihad and claim to be authentic representatives of their faith.  By Tarek Fatah The gloom of 9/11 still hung in the air one December evening in 2001 as I mingled with guests at the Canadian Arab Federation's (CAF) annual heritage day event. That December evening, the CAF honoured me with their highest award in recognition for my services to the Arab cause. The plaque that then-CAF president John Asfour presented to me still hangs prominently in my home. Today, the CAF, a great Canadian institution built as a meeting place for Canadian Arabs of all political and racial hues, has been turned into a mouthpiece for Hamas and Hezbollah in Canada. The CAF used to support the peace process in the Middle East and held healthy debates on the pros and cons of the Oslo peace accord, but these days any backer of the two-state solution is automatically branded a traitor to the Muslim cause. One need only listen to the words of the current CAF leadership to understand the abyss of mediocrity this federally and provincially funded organization has sunk into.  If you are Canadian and Islamist, you probably voted for the New Democratic Party (NDP), which won 18.2% of the vote on October 14, 2008. This was an increase in of about 1% in the vote and led to seven more seats from the 2006 elections. However, the party could not budge itself from its permanent 4th place in Canada's parliament. Endorsed by the Canadian Islamic Congress (CIC), the left-leaning NDP has shown an incredible lack of understanding of the Islamist agenda and how soft jihadis are using democratic institutions by manipulating our respect for multiculturalism. As a political ideology, in the long-term Islamism seeks to establish an Islamic state in the North America, but this is barely mentioned by the suave and polished young Islamists who appear in expensive suits and with a flourish of legalese and the right disarming accents. While a Taliban style overthrow is unlikely, in the short term, Islamists hope to fundamentally change western foreign policy in favor of the foreign governments that fund them and organizations they ideologically adhere to, such as the Muslim Brotherhood. Recognizing this threat, Marc Lebuis, who runs "Point de Bascule", invited moderate Muslims Tarek Fatah, Salim Mansur and me to participate in a conference in Montreal to address the infiltration of Islamists into the Canadian political system, where the first real arena has been the NDP. The NDP was founded by social democrats, and was originally, as noted by Mansur, a critical opponent of Communism, and a key element in "denying communists in Canada the opportunity to acquire any shred of legitimacy by posing as defenders of the working people." Today, however, it allows itself to be used by an equally potent ideological enemy, radical Islamism. Quebec's new French-language anti-Islamist website, Point de Bascule – "tipping point" – sponsored a dramatic press conference in Montreal Oct. 2 on the dangers of hard-line Islamist penetration of Canada. But this was consciousness-raising with a powerful difference. All three panelists were moderate Canadian Muslims. All three face death fatwas. And all three spoke unsparingly – some giving names and startling specifics – of the Sharia surge and stealth jihad in Quebec and the rest of Canada. Indeed, detailed allegations were heard about Islamist inroads into the federal New Democratic Party (NDP), Canada's social democratic party, and about infiltration of a government commission with power to define and silence "hate" speech. These were momentous claims in the context of Canada's national election campaign – the national vote takes place today. As evidenced by the number of journalists in attendance, the Quebec media were galvanized. India-born Dr. Salim Mansur of the University of Western Ontario opened by calling on Canadians to end the political correctness and self-censorship that has muffled efforts to debate the stealth jihad – the gradual radical-Islamicizing of Canadian society. One, Marc Lebuis, is a name you won't recognize, because up to now he's kept a low profile as the one-man show running www.pointdebasculecanada.ca. This is an anti-Islamist site that brings francophone Quebecers the news and frank opinions on the relentless push of the soft jihadists in our midst to Islamicize society, opinions that the mainstream media are too politically correct to publish. Marc and some close associates organized today's press conference on the subject, "Political Islam - A Threat to Our Freedoms." The three other brave people appearing with him should be household names, but their courage and eloquence is, shamefully, only known and saluted by a relative handful of grateful Canadians: Salim Mansur, Tarek Fatah and Raheel Raza, three Canadian Muslims facing death threats by other Canadian Muslims for exposing the dangers of Islamism, a totalitarian ideology that wears the mask of religion. The room at the Omni hotel in Montreal was filled to capacity, reverberating with frequent applause to statements like these from Salim Mansur: "Islam is my private life, my conscience...[but] my faith does not take precedence over my duties...to Canada and its constitution, which I embrace freely;" "I am first and most importantly a Canadian;" "only in a free society will you find Islam as a faith and not a political religion." Appreciation was shown as well for the statements of Tarek Fatah, who spoke about the threat to freedom of speech posed by Islamists who constantly seek to chill any perceived criticism of any Muslim. In explaining the danger Islamism poses to society, Fatah said that "Islam is to Islamism as uranium is to weapons of mass destruction." Having lived 30 years in Pakistan and 10 in Saudi Arabia, Fatah knows intimately what constitutes "soft jihad" when he sees it. He expressed his sorrow, as a lifetime social democrat that after 17 years of engaged support for the NDP, he could no longer be affiliated with that party. As far as the people you mentioned in your message, they are all in it for their INDIVIDUAL careers and fame, and I do not mean that in a negative way. This is a disease that has afflicted many bright Muslim secularists. They only prefer to fly solo, not in formation. Formation flying requires caring and wrrying for your wingman and the other planes, while solo flying like Gary Powers is a great thrill, until one gets shot down.
What Irshad Manji, Eteraz and Mona do not realize is that solo flyers rarely leave the people on the ground in awe or moved, while formation flights do exactly the opposite. Hence, even though we are individually not as glistening as the star performers of the USA, we in the MCC have moved mountains.
In a few months we will have MCC type orgs in Holland, France and Germany as well as UK and Denmark. It would be a pity if we cannot do this in US.
So please do let me know if you are prepared to affix your signatures on this open letter. If not, that is OK, but please do lend me the courtesy of a response, an affirmation or a regret.
BTW, I’ll be back in Toronto on Saturday morning. I can tell you folks that the MCC is seen among European Secular Muslims as a role model. We have a huge fight to win and so please lend your leadership your shoulder to carry the weight and at times to cry on, please.
