Three Great Articles on Moderate Muslim Action

Pajamas Media has a great article about a moderate Muslim organization called LIM in Norway that is reacting to the attack on one of the Prophet Mohammed cartoonists by organizing a demonstration for free speech.

The spokesperson, Sheikh Rehman, is challenging the Islamic Council of Norway to do the same, but says he thinks they won’t do it because they worry they will “lose face in the Muslim world.” Rehman even supports the publication of the cartoons, saying:

Muhammed didn’t want to be depicted, because he didn’t want to be turned into a false god. When Muslims believe that depictions of the prophet insult him, then they are turning him into just such a false god. There should thus be no reason not to caricature him. I would go so far as to say that Muslim leaders are unqualified.

The second article comes from the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada.

Twenty imams that are patrt of the group published a fatwa on January 8 saying any attack on the U.S. or Canada is an attack on all the Muslims living there, and “Islam requires Muslims to stand up to this evil.” And there’s also this very important line in the fatwa:

In fact, the constitutions of the United States and Canada are very close to the Islamic guiding principles of human rights and freedom. There is no conflict between the Islamic values of freedom and justice and the Canadian /US values of freedom and justice.

Irfan al-Alawi and Stephen Schwartz in The Weekly Standard write about the All-India Ulema Mashaikh Board, and how the group’s secretary-general has called for Wahhabist control of the country’s Islamic institutions to be ended.

They write that the majority of Sunni Muslims in India and Pakistan “are conservative but adhere to the spiritual Islam of Sufism.” He even puts a number on it, saying 80% of India’s Muslims practice Sufi traditions.

KARACHI: Offering prayers behind any imam who endorses terrorism and suicide attacks on Muslims, mosques, imambargahs, women and children and the country's security forces is declared haram (forbidden in Islam), according to a decree issued by religious scholars on Tuesday.

"Suicide bombings and terrorist attacks in Pakistan are haram.

Offering namaz behind those religious leaders who support suicide bombings and terrorism in the country is also haram," the decree stated.

The decree against the pro-terrorism clerics and religious party leaders came at an Ulema Convention that was held at the Jinnah Ground, under the aegis of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement.

The clerics urged unity among the various sects of Islam, saying that all sects should respect each other in the light of the teachings of the holy Quran and the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). MQM chief Altaf Hussain had appealed to scholars to condemn pro-terrorism leaders as well.

The MQM chief asked religious scholars to create awareness among the masses about religious extremism. He said their role was crucial in defeating extremism in the country. He said use of force to impose sharia as well as terrorists involved in suicide bombings had defamed Islam across the world.

Indian Ulema have no time to lose, must call militant Quranic surahs obsolete

The so-called Indian Mujahedeen have used in their notorious e-mails certain Quranic verses to justify killing of innocent civilians. These are the same verses that enemies of Islam’s pacific and humane philosophy have been traditionally using for centuries to demonise Islam. Muslims who go berserk and want to simply smite all and sundry in their crazy stupor also routinely use these verses to justify their fanaticism and probably also to brainwash the still-not-so-crazy to their cause.

The Head of Algerian Muslim Scholars: "The Syrian poet Adonis is a pervert"

The Head of Algerian Muslim Ulemas Association, Sheikh Abderahmane Chibane, said he is clinging to his declaration qualifying the Syrian poet Adonis as “a pervert”.

A communiqué released by the Association added that those who have responded fiercely to his opinion “are neither acquainted with his personality, nor with his opinion preaching tolerance.”

Moreover, the communiqué signed by Abdelhamid Abdous, the Director of Al-Bassair newspaper, which is considered as a tribune of the Association, said Mr. Chibane had not the intention of debating the ideas of the Syrian poet Adonis. However the conference held by Adonis, has not focused only on his poetic thesis, but he has criticized Islam, Muslim scholars, and even the Companions of Prophet Mohammad, (Peace Be upon Him).

In another communiqué released few days ago, Mr. Chibane, Adonis has been qualified as an “arrogant” following ideas he expressed at a conference held at the national library in Algiers, last Oct.14. “Living under an Islamic regime, means that our civilization will extinguish,” said Adonis at that time.

According to the recent communiqué, of which El Khabar got a copy, said newspapers which criticized the position of Chibane, while saying that he uses moral and religion principles to sow division between the Algerian people, “are not acquainted with the personality of the Sheikh, who preaches jurisprudence, moderation, tolerance, peace, and unity.”
