The former. Koran 4.34: Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great.
Hallo AdagioForStrings: it is a matter of Evolution. In the West it was the same, but I would say, in StoneAge it was like this. Everything depended on physical Power, exactely the way it (still) happens in the animal World. Man/Male is (physically) stronger than Woman/Female. Woman's/Female's "Weakeness" has also to do with the Fact that - she - gets pregnant. She gives birth to babies. And babies are seen as a "Problem" when it comes to give them Protection and Food - not to mention that they distract Women's Attention from Men (if you know what I mean) -. Babies require Attention, Engagement, Focusing (on them): they require the Person to be mentally and phisically grown up. The Person/adult isn't "the Center of the World" anymore - the Kids are it. I think you will find more about the subject in "Transactional Analysis" - have a look (if you like), and tell me (if you want) if you get the Point -. Shortly: Gender Equality has to do with both physical and emotional and mental Evolution. If there is a lack of this kind of Evolution, there a lack of Balancing between "He" and "She". Usually (usually) the Man/Boy/Male is phisically and mentally actif, while She is passif, and the Woman/Girl/Female is emotionally actif, while He is passif. Activity is considered "Power", and from the "Scheme" above you can see that "Male" is more "powerful" than "Female". But: Evolution means that both Males and Females develop phisical/emotional/mental Skills and become "complete Beings". What about phisical Difference? This will be somehow wellbalanced when, and just when, Men/Males will take full Responsibility for their sexual Wishes and Activity. There is a biological Difference between He and She (who denies it?) and Equality has to do with Responsibility (which has to do with Mind rather than with Body). Giving birth to Children under Gender UNequality Rules has to do with "Proudness" and "Quantity" (which has a little to do with Responsibility) - giving birth to Childern under Gender Equality Rules has to do with "Awareness" and "Quality" (which has a lot to do with Responsibility). About religious Teachings: either People (Human Beings) are able to understand Metaphores, or there is no way to Evolution of Mankind (under Its mental, emotional and practical Sides). So called "sexist Pigs" are basically UNgrown/UNmature Beings. [Another very important Point about Equality: Homework and Childcare has to be recognized for what it is/they are: true/real Job (Workingtime: 24/24 Hours a Day, 7/7 Days a Week, 365 Days a Year ...). As soon as this Job will be concretely paid - honest Wages - I guess "Gender Equality" will be a clear Reality under Everyones' Eyes ...]. Sunny Regards.
Well, actually, upon further consideration, I realized that this is not a scientific poll & that people can skew the results for their own particular objectives. So, as you were, carry on.
That's true, it's not a scientific poll. However, we have over 30 polls and results are somewhat similar. Also, there is another factor that makes us believe that the results are quite accurate.
