(Washington, DC) Americans Against Hate (AAH), an anti-bigotry, anti-terrorism watchdog group, condemns in the strongest possible terms the appearance this past Saturday of the Reverend Jesse Jackson at the annual banquet of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a Hamas-related organization.
CAIR was created in 1994 as being a part of Hamas leader Mousa Abu Marzook’s American Palestine Committee. All three founders of CAIR were leaders of the Islamic Association for Palestine (IAP), then-the American Propaganda wing of Hamas. One of those leaders, Nihad Awad, is currently the National Executive Director of CAIR.
During the event, Awad and other CAIR representatives allowed themselves to be interviewed by Islam Online (IOL), a website that features fatwas (religious edicts) saying that it’s a correct punishment to throw homosexuals off of tall buildings, that it’s an obligation for Muslims to attack American troops overseas, and that suicide bombing is not really suicide.
AAH Chairman Joe Kaufman stated, “Jesse Jackson, in participating at a CAIR sponsored event, ignores the organization’s terrorist ties, specifically its connection with Hamas, a group whose goal is to destroy the Jewish state of Israel. He of all people should know to stay away from such controversies. Does he not remember the criticism he suffered following his anti-Jewish ‘Hymietown’ remark or during his camaraderie with vicious anti-Semite Louis Farrakhan? If Reverend Jackson wishes to be viewed as a man of peace, he should stop associating with and trying to legitimize extremists.”
