Schools' Iran $$ pipeline

Anti-Israel, pro-Iran university professors are being funded by a shadowy multimillion-dollar Islamic charity based in Manhattan that the feds charge is an illegal front for the repressive Iranian regime.

The deep-pocketed Alavi Foundation has aggressively given away hundreds of thousands of dollars to Columbia University and Rutgers University for Middle Eastern and Persian studies programs that employ professors sympathetic to the Iranian dictatorship.

"We found evidence that the government of Iran really controlled everything about the foundation," said Adam Kaufmann, investigations chief at the Manhattan District Attorney's Office.

Federal law-enforcement authorities are in the midst of seizing up to $650 million in assets from the Alavi Foundation, which they charge funnels money to Iran-supported Islamic schools in the United States and to a syndicate of Iranian spies based in Europe.

In one of the biggest handouts, the controversial charity donated $100,000 to Columbia University after the Ivy League school agreed to host Iranian leader and Holocaust denier Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, according to the foundation's 2007 tax filings obtained by The Post.

Rutgers professor Hooshang Amirahmadi, former head of the school's Center for Middle Eastern Studies and president of the American-Iranian Council, a nonprofit advocacy group, unabashedly has touted Hezbollah and Hamas as legitimate organizations and not terrorists.

Between 2005 and 2007, the Alavi Foundation donated $351,600 to the Rutgers Persian language program, a spokesman for the school acknowledged. The university would not comment further.

Alavi's Web site says its mission is the "promotion of Islamic culture and Persian language."

"This is all about Iran laundering their policies through academe," said Michael Rubin, an Iran expert at the American Enterprise Institute think tank. "And the ivory tower is prostituting itself for money."

But Amirahmadi disagreed. "Grants from Alavi are made to the universities, not to the professors," he told The Post.

Columbia spokesman Robert Hornsby said Alavi's donations rarely topped more than a few thousand dollars and that the $100,000 donation was its largest single gift. Hornsby added that the school was surprised the foundation had direct ties to the Iranian government.

The Alavi foundation declined comment.

Hamas-Linked Charity Offers $1.4M for Israeli Soldier Abduction

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip — A Gaza charity headed by the interior minister of the militant Hamas group on Wednesday offered $1.4 million to any Arab citizen of Israel who abducts a soldier.

Palestinians have frequently called on Israeli Arabs to abduct Israeli soldiers, but this is the first time that money has been offered.

The Waad group from Gaza offered the bounty for Israeli soldiers in an e-mail sent to Palestinian media. The organization, which supports Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, is headed by Hamas' Interior Minister Fathi Hamad. The minister did not return messages seeking comment.

The charity could presumably raise the cash through its connections with Hamas. The militant group is thought to have millions of dollars at its disposal, both through its tight control of Gaza and support from Iran and other allies.

Waad's director, Usama Kahlout, said the bounty was in response to an Israeli group's offer to pay Gaza residents for information on the whereabouts of Sgt. Gilad Schalit, an Israeli soldier captured more than three years ago by Hamas-allied militants.

The Born to Freedom Foundation offered $10 million for information pertaining to Israeli soldiers missing in action or held captive. Activists routinely call phone numbers in Gaza as well as in Lebanon looking for leads on missing Israeli soldiers. Israeli intelligence is also believed to call Gazans in search of information.

German mediators are currently overseeing negotiations between bitter rivals Israel and Hamas to exchange Schalit for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.

Israel is holding some 7,500 Palestinian prisoners. Schalit is the only Israeli held by Hamas, while four Israelis who disappeared in Lebanon in the 1980s remain unaccounted for.

On Wednesday, visiting French foreign minister, Bernard Kouchner, met with Schalit's parents in Jerusalem.

The Schalits have French citizenship, and French President Nicolas Sarkozy has offered his support to the family.

Judge Rules in Favor of Hamas/al-Qaeda-Related Charity

KindHearts
Judge stops terror probe of Ohio charity

October 26, 2009

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The U.S. government must halt its investigation into whether a charity should be deemed a terrorist organization, a judge ruled Monday.

KindHearts for Charitable Humanitarian Development cannot be labeled a "specially designated global terrorist" pending further action by U.S. District Judge James Carr in Toledo, Ohio.

Carr in August ruled that the government violated the Constitution by secretly freezing the charity's assets in 2006. The charity had asked him to halt the investigation pending further action regarding the August ruling.

Treasury officials said KindHearts was connected with the Hamas-affiliated Holy Land Foundation and the al-Qaeda-affiliated Global Relief Foundation. KindHearts leaders have denied being connected to any terrorist group and say the group is a nonprofit charitable organization that administers humanitarian aid to the world's poor.

In his Monday ruling, the judge said the government's actions could cause KindHearts to lose its attorneys and harm its reputation.

"Defendants are requiring KindHearts to respond to allegations that I have found constitutionally lacking," Carr wrote. "This ... has severely prejudiced KindHearts' ability to respond especially in light of defendants' arbitrary and capricious denial of KindHearts' requests to pay attorneys fees with its own blocked resources.

"To analogize, KindHearts not only is blindfolded, but also has its hands tied behind its back," the judge wrote.

KindHearts has asked the judge to alter the process by which the government designates groups terrorist organizations and allow it to use its funds to pay legal fees, said Alan Kabat, a Washington attorney representing the charity.

"We're very pleased with the court's ruling," he said. "The effect is to postpone any designation until the judge has ruled on the remedy for any violations that have already occurred."
Both sides are to present written arguments to the judge by Jan. 11.

In his August ruling, Carr said the government has an obligation to tell an organization why it is freezing its assets and give it a chance to respond.

The government had argued that the judge did not have the authority to issue an order stopping the investigation.

Dean Boyd, a U.S. Department of Justice spokesman, said the government is reviewing the ruling and had no immediate comment late Monday.

Why Muslim Charities Fund the Jihad

Gihad, Yes We Can
The answer is clear, though Obama's commitment to helping Muslims overcome U.S. rules governing charity is not.

By Raymond Ibrahim

From what American schoolchildren are being taught by their teachers to what Americans are being told by their presidents, concepts unique to Islam are nowadays almost always “Westernized.” Whether the product of naivety, arrogance, or downright disingenuousness, this phenomenon has resulted in epistemic (and thus endemic) failures, crippling Americans from objectively understanding some of Islam’s more troublesome doctrines.

A typical seventh-grade textbook, for instance, teaches that “jihad represents the human struggle to overcome difficulties and do things that are pleasing to God. Muslims strive to respond positively to personal difficulties as well as worldly challenges. For instance, they might work to be better people, reform society, or correct injustice.”

Strictly speaking, this is by and large true. However, by not explaining what it means to be “better people, reform society, or correct injustice” — from a distinctly Islamic, as opposed to Western, perspective — the textbook abandons students to fall back on their own (misleading) interpretations.

Yet the facts remain: In Islam, killing certain “evil-doers,” such as apostates or homosexuals, is a way of “correcting injustice”; overthrowing manmade constitutional orders (such as the United States) and replacing them with Sharia mandates, and subjugating women and non-Muslims, are ways of “reforming society.” Those enforcing all this are, in fact, “better people” — indeed, according to the Koran (3:110), they are “the best of peoples, evolved for mankind, enjoining what is right, forbidding what is wrong,” that is, ruling according to Sharia law. United States' Speech to Islamic World: half-Truths about Koran, historical Falsehood, Charity to Terrorists

Obama

Sound and Fury in Cairo

Friday, June 05, 2009 - by Baron Bodissey

At least 95% of Barack Hussein Obama’s speech yesterday in Cairo was feel-good boilerplate. It was mostly a batch of unremarkable oats for the nose-bags of all those Birkenstockers and Trustafarians back in the United States who were responsible for his election.

But as for the rest… Well, most of the rest consisted of blatant pandering to the “Muslim World”. And there were a few scary parts, such as this sentence, which had nothing whatsoever to do with Islam:

And I want to particularly say this to young people of every faith, in every country — you, more than anyone, have the ability to reimagine the world, to remake this world. [emphasis added]

Let’s remake this world.Ladies and gentlemen, this is a fascist pronouncement. People who want to remake the world slide inexorably into totalitarianism, because they have to act against that annoying and persistent impediment known as “human nature”. The 20th century was strewn with millions of corpses in mass graves and killing fields as the result a variety of ideologies that attempted to remake the world.Thank God for the ongoing financial crisis, which will serve to reduce the ability of Barack Hussein Obama to realize his grandiose dreams.

Other bloggers and writers have provided excellent analyses of this speech. Robert Spencer does the best job of fisking it at Jihad Watch, and Melanie Phillips and Caroline Glick have supplied their own pertinent commentary.

Mr. Obama said:

Now, much has been made of the fact that an African American with the name Barack Hussein Obama could be elected President.Actually, this topic was off-limits in polite society before the election. Pamela at Atlas Shrugs reminds us that much was not made of “Hussein”:

Obama deceitfully hid his Muslim background and schooling and his agenda. Little did America know that Obama’s objective would be a conversion of this nation to “the largest Muslim country in the world”.

The President spoke at length about the Arab-Israeli conflict, displaying the mealy-mouthed “moral equivalence” that so often characterizes the rhetoric of Western leaders:

For decades then, there has been a stalemate: two peoples with legitimate aspirations, each with a painful history that makes compromise elusive.

But not all of his examples were this even-handed. As Yid With Lid points out, the President singled out the Holocaust and European anti-Semitism without even hinting at the single greatest sinkhole of anti-Semitism in our own time: the Muslim Middle East.

Mr. Obama also proudly cited the Koran:

The Holy Koran teaches that whoever kills an innocent is as — it is as if he has killed all mankind. The passage referred to above is part of 5:32:

Therefore We prescribed for the Children of Israel that whoso slays a soul not to retaliate for a soul slain, nor for corruption done in the land, shall be as if he had slain mankind altogether; and whoso gives life to a soul, shall be as if he has given life to mankind altogether. Our Messengers have already come to them with the clear signs; then many of them thereafter commit excesses in the earth. The President neglected to mention the verse immediately following it (5:33), which says:

This is the recompense of those who fight against God and His Messenger, and hasten about the earth, to do corruption there: they shall be slaughtered, or crucified, or their hands and feet shall alternately be struck off; or they shall be banished from the land. That is a degradation for them in this world; and in the world to come awaits them a mighty chastisement.

This text is bad enough in itself , but it should also be noted that the phrase “those who fight against God and His Messenger” is widely interpreted by mainstream Islamic scholars to mean anyone who opposes Muslims and resists the spread of Islam.

Yet if you believe Barack Hussein Obama, Islam means “tolerance”. He said:

Islam has a proud tradition of tolerance. We see it in the history of Andalusia and Cordoba during the Inquisition. I saw it firsthand as a child in Indonesia, where devout Christians worshiped freely in an overwhelmingly Muslim country. That is the spirit we need today. People in every country should be free to choose and live their faith based upon the persuasion of the mind and the heart and the soul. This tolerance is essential for religion to thrive, but it’s being challenged in many different ways.

Let’s overlook the putative tolerance of the past and consider the facts on the ground right now, in the tenth year of the 21st century. If Islam is so tolerant, why have we seen all the Muslim-majority countries — Pakistan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, Turkey, etc. — steadily drained of their Christian, Jewish, and Hindu populations?

Stories like this one from Asia News have become more and more frequent in Islamic countries under the influence of Salafist doctrine:

Non-Muslims in villages along the northern Afghan-Pakistani border are forced to pay the jizya. Lashkar-e-Islam wants a thousand rupee per adult male to allow non-Muslims to live there with the right to travel. In Orakzai area the Taliban take over two stores and various houses owned by Sikhs. Some families are forced to pay up to 20 million rupees in order to stay.

Non-Muslims have to pay if they want to retain their religion and live among Muslims. It’s worth noting that exactly the same system was in force in Cordoba and Andalusia a thousand years ago, during the “Golden Age of Islam”.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

A couple of Gates of Vienna readers have contributed their own observations about the President’s speech. First a reaction to this passage from the speech:

As a student of history, I also know civilization’s debt to Islam. It was Islam — at places like Al-Azhar University — that carried the light of learning through so many centuries, paving the way for Europe’s Renaissance and Enlightenment. It was innovation in Muslim communities that developed the order of algebra; our magnetic compass and tools of navigation; our mastery of pens and printing; our understanding of how disease spreads and how it can be healed. Islamic culture has given us majestic arches and soaring spires; timeless poetry and cherished music; elegant calligraphy and places of peaceful contemplation. And throughout history, Islam has demonstrated through words and deeds the possibilities of religious tolerance and racial equality.

This is Fjordman’s response:

Is there even a single truthful statement in this entire paragraph? Perhaps they had some nice calligraphy, and a few Muslim scholars, especially al-Khwarizmi and Omar Khayyam, made contributions to algebra, but apart from that it’s almost total nonsense. The magnetic compass was invented by the Chinese, and possibly by Europeans independently. Printing of books was invented by the Chinese and stubbornly and persistently rejected by Muslims for a thousand years or more due to Islamic religious resistance. Al-Azhar focused on Islamic religious learning — sharia law — not on natural philosophy or science, as did European universities. This is why arguably the greatest original scientific work ever written in the Arabic language, Alhazen’s Book of Optics, was written in Cairo but almost totally ignored in the Arabic-speaking world afterward, including at al-Azhar in Cairo. It was studied in Europe.Modern algebra, too, was developed in Europe. Muslim scholars did not understand how disease spread or how it could be cured. This was proved in late nineteenth century Europe with scholars such as the great Frenchman Louis Pasteur and the German Robert Koch. The germ theory of disease could only be proven after the creation of sufficiently powerful microscopes. The microscope was an exclusively European invention with no known equivalent anywhere else in the world.

Concerning Islamic charitable giving, or zakat, the President said:

For instance, in the United States, rules on charitable giving have made it harder for Muslims to fulfill their religious obligation. That’s why I’m committed to working with American Muslims to ensure that they can fulfill zakat.A reader sent this response by email:

Given that we know that zakat is used “for Allah’s cause” (i.e. for mujahideen, those fighting in holy battle, jihad), could BHO’s support for it — if he proposes legislation to that effect — be grounds for impeachment in that he is failing to protect the US since zakat is inherently seditious against non-Islamic governments and their peoples?

Of course, it would also be grounds for any congressmen/women to oppose such legislation, so it is essential that we get this info out on as many sites as possible. Also, if we can put this point across about zakat, it can form the basis of suing mosques and other recipient organizations of zakat, as third-parties in legal cases against Islamic terrorism. I noticed a few years back a US court granted in favor of people whose relatives had been killed by Moslem terrorists and the US court found Iran ‘guilty’, but of course no costs could be recovered. If we can show that all mosques do collect zakat, then we have a basis for helping to dismantle the financial strength of jihad worldwide. These mosques and “charities” are the real conduits for terrorism; dismantle them with lawsuits and expose their seditious natures and that is half the battle.

Shariah Finance Watch is thinking along the same lines: any laws that are passed to enable shariah finance are by definition unconstitutional, and are vulnerable on First Amendment grounds.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

There is much, much more that could be said about yesterday’s speech in Cairo. Whole dissertations could be written about the dissimulations, exaggerations, and untruths contained in Mr. Obama’s words.

However, I’ll leave it at that for now.

I’d like to think this is the last bit of pandering to Islam that we will see from our current president. Unfortunately, it’s in all likelihood just the beginning of his administration’s plunge into complete dhimmitude.

The illustration at the top is from Jyllands-Posten. Thanks to TB for the tip.

Money for Hamas

CBSP
Checks, donation pledges, postal transfers.. the start of the Israeli operation in the Gaza Strip had an immediate effect, in France: The Committee for Charity and Support for the Palestinians (CBSP) saw its fund-raising increase faster than usual.

For at least the past three years the association, based in Paris, collected about 5 million euros a year. The money is then transferred to Egypt, where another association is tasked with allocating it for humanitarian projects in Gaza, as well as the Palestinian camps in Lebanon.

However, neither Israel nor the US believe this version. For the two allies, the CBSP is a hidden financier of the Hamas, now at war with the Jewish state. It's classed as a terrorist organization. George W. Bush named the organization as such in an official speech in 2003.

On this side of the Atlantic, the CBSP is also under suspicion. But it's never been confirmed. Founded in 1990 in Nancy by two Palestinian students, the Committee has offices in Lille, Lyons and Marseille. In 2001 Credit Lyonnais, its bank at the time, was reported twice to Tracfin, the anti-money laundering branch of the Economy and Finance Ministry, for suspect fund transfers. Checks did not reveal the more minor infraction. They did have one consequence, though: the CBSP left Crédit lyonnais for the postal bank of La Poste. Read more ...

Pakistan's Post-Mumbai Clampdown Targets Islamists

Pakistan
Pakistani police officers prepare to seal the
door of a Jamaat ud-Dawa office in Quetta,
Pakistan on Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008.
By Patrick Goodenough

Pakistani authorities have placed under house arrest the founder of the militant Islamist group that India blames for the Mumbai terrorist attacks, and on Friday they were shutting down the offices of his “charitable” organization.

Hafiz Saeed claims the charity, Jamaat ud-Dawa (JuD), is unrelated to the outlawed militant group, Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), but the U.S. State Department calls it a “front operation” for LeT.

Pakistan moved against Saeed and JuD two weeds after the attacks in India’s commercial capital that killed more than 170 people. It did so under pressure from India, the U.S. and other governments, and a day after a U.N. Security Council sanctions committee imposed an assets freeze, travel ban and arms embargo on four JuD/LeT members. Read more ...

The 'charity' that plotted the Mumbai attacks

JuD
Pakistan has a hard job rooting out militancy. But it cannot let Jamaat-ud-Dawa carry on fooling people about its aims.

By Anthony Loyd

Wriggling under the illumination of media scrutiny after accusations of its involvement in the slaughter in Mumbai, Jamaat-ud-Dawa's response last week was a workmanlike PR counter-move. Journalists were taken on a guided tour of the organisation's headquarters, 30 miles from Lahore, where a civilised lunch of spiced chicken and rice accompanied declarations of innocence, condemnation of the terrorist attack and claims to be nothing more than a charity group involved in relief work.

Terrorists? Not us, guv. But in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar, just three weeks before the Mumbai attacks, the advice of PR gurus was noticeably absent when I met a leading official from the group. “We don't like democracy,” Atiq ur-Rahman told me, eyes ablaze. “Our struggle is to establish an Islamic caliphate throughout the world. Whichever force tries to resist it shall be shattered.”

He bubbled with the internal rage so characteristic of militants, and having given a perfunctory resumé of JuD's relief work among Pakistani civilians displaced by fighting and natural disaster, launched himself into a diatribe against India and the West. The rant concluded with an amazing on-the-spot attempt to recruit my interpreter, citing the abuse of Muslims by infidel forces in Somalia, Chechnya and Kashmir. In the embarrassed silence that followed his departure we were left to flick through a copy of Why We Are Performing Jihad, the jihadist manual that he had handed us to further his case. US cracks down on Islamic charity

The Union of Good
By JEANNINE AVERSA

The Bush administration acted Wednesday against an Islamic charity suspected of helping to bankroll Hamas, the militant Palestinian group that the United States considers an international terrorist organization.

The Treasury Department's action against the Union of Good means that any bank accounts or other financial assets belonging to the charity found in the United States will be frozen. Americans also are barred from making donations to the group, which the U.S. government alleged was created by leaders of Hamas to transfer money to Hamas.

"Terrorist groups such as Hamas continue to exploit charities to radicalize vulnerable communities and cultivate support for their violent activities," said Stuart Levey, the Treasury Department's undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence.

The department alleged that the Union of Good "acts as a broker for Hamas" by facilitating money transfers among a web of charitable organizations - some of which the United States has already put on its blacklist of terrorist financiers - and Hamas-controlled organizations in the West Bank and Gaza. Charities and Terrorism

Zakat
By Phil Leggiere

New paper examines how Al Qaeda uses moderate Muslims to ‘microfinance” terror

Terrorist networks and organizations have many “underground” means of financing themselves, from drug smuggling to cybercrime. As challenging as these clandestine methods are to globally eradicate, an equally vexing problem is how to shut-off jihadist funding siphoned off from so-called “legitimate” charities.

Addressing that problem, according to Tolga Koker Department of Economics and Carlos Yordan Department of Political Science Drew University, means addressing the question of why tens of thousands of Muslims who are not terrorists and often opposed themselves to terrorism nonetheless support the work of charities that support jihadist operations. Their new paper, titled Microfinancing Terrorism: A Study in Al Qaeda Financing Strategy, published Tuesday by the Social Science Research Network, tries to do just that. Read more ...

Purpose of HLF's Charity Debated in Closing Arguments

HLF
DALLAS – They sang praises to a terrorist group, had telephone access to its leadership and deceived the public about their true ambitions, a federal prosecutor said Monday about the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development (HLF).

Five former HLF officials are on trial for illegally routing millions of dollars in donations to Hamas through a series of Palestinian charities, known as zakat committees, that prosecutors say are controlled by the terrorist group.

In his closing argument, federal prosecutor Barry Jonas pointed to what he called the "highlights of the highlights" of the government's six-week case. It includes hundreds of exhibits, ranging from wiretapped telephone calls to audio and video conferences to stacks of bank records.

But the case likely hinges on whether jurors agree the zakat committees were controlled by Hamas. Jonas pointed to instances in which some committee officials were identified as Hamas members in media interviews and by other Hamas officials. Telephone records in evidence tied in other committee officials. And a former HLF fundraiser testifying for the government said that the zakat committees were a part of Hamas. Read more ...

Ohio charity accused of terrorist ties sues feds

Kindhearts
By John Seewer

TOLEDO, Ohio -- An Ohio-based charity that the U.S. government says is linked to Hamas is demanding that officials unfreeze its assets.

Attorneys for Kindhearts for Charitable Humanitarian Development sued Thursday in federal court in Toledo. The charity says the government hasn’t given it a chance to defend itself.

The Treasury Department in 2006 ordered U.S. banks to freeze the charity’s assets. The government says it was funneling money to organizations affiliated with the militant Islamic group Hamas.

Kindhearts denies any terrorist connections. The Treasury Department did not return a message left Thursday by The Associated Press.

BBC charity funded jihadists

BBC
Ben Quinn

The BBC’s Children in Need charity donated £20,000 to an organisation that funded the propaganda activities of the July 7 bombers, it has emerged.

The financial support was provided between 1999 and 2002 to the Leeds Community School, which funded and shared premises with an Islamic bookshop where the suicide bombers Mohammed Siddique Khan and Shezhad Tanweer regularly met. Siddique Khan attempted to radicalise youths by showing propaganda films at the bookshop, a focal point at the time for young Muslims.

The school in Beeston also paid for adventure weekends, such as a rafting trip to North Wales a month before the London attacks. Tanweer and Siddique Khan went on the trip, along with Khalid Khaliq, who this year was jailed for terrorism offences. Read more ...

The Jihad against Free Speech

By Patrick Poole

In June, the US Treasury Department listed the entire the Saudi-run “charity”, the Al-Haramain Islamic Foundation, a specially designated global terrorist entity for its active and longstanding role in financing international terrorism. Between 2002-2004, thirteen different Al-Haramain branches had been individually designated, including the US branch based in Ashland, Oregon, charged with providing funds to Al-Qaeda. This new announcement applies now to the entire organization worldwide.

One important element to note in connection with the recent Al-Haramain designation is that on at least two separate occasions it had used legal threats against US media organization to coerce retractions following reports of its ties to the international terror network – ties that are now considered well-established by both the US government and the media. Muntasser gets jail for lying to FBI
Muslim charity founder sentenced in U.S. court

WORCESTER - The founder of a Muslim charity was sentenced yesterday in U.S. District Court to a year in prison and fined $10,000 for lying to an FBI agent when he denied traveling to Afghanistan in 1994-1995.

In sentencing Emadeddin Z. Muntasser, former president of Care International Inc., a defunct Boston charity, Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV doubled the maximum amount of prison time and the fine called for under the federal advisory sentencing guidelines. Mr. Muntasser, 43, is a former Worcester resident and Worcester Polytechnic Institute graduate living in Braintree. He must report for his prison sentence within four weeks.

The U.S. attorney’s office called for a five-year prison term, saying the case is being watched around the world to see how the United States will treat someone the Justice Department said abused the tax system to send money to organizations that have since been branded by the government as terrorists. But Mr. Muntasser’s lawyers pointed out that guidelines called for a sentence of between zero and 6 months and that the U.S. Probation Department recommended a sentence within that range on a simple false statement case.

Mr. Muntasser was detained Jan. 11, the day a federal jury convicted him in Boston on charges of conspiracy to defraud the United States and scheming to conceal material facts as well as lying to a federal agent. But expectations that Mr. Muntasser might be freed on a sentence of time served were raised after Judge Saylor reversed the jury verdict on the two most serious charges and freed Mr. Muntasser June 13 on conditions to await sentencing yesterday. Lawyers for the charity and the government argued over the U.S. Treasury Department's declaration that the Al-Haramain Islamic Foundation based in Saudi Arabia was a lobal [sic] terrorist organization.
This case is about much more than just fighting a terror designation. It goes to the heart of whether the U.S. government has the right to conduct secret surveillance of terrorism suspects on American soil. A government employees error released surveillance documents to the defense, and plenty of Bush hating, America hating lawyers seized the opportunity to hijack the case which is now in the hands of liberal Clinton and Carter appointed judges.
