2 Chicago Men Indicted on Federal Terrorism Charges for Mumbai Attack

Two Chicago men were indicted Thursday on charges they planned a violent attack on a Danish newspaper and helped lay the groundwork for the November 2008 terrorist rampage that killed 166 people in the Indian city of Mumbai.

David Coleman Headley and businessman Tahawwur Hussain Rana were named in a 12-count superseding indictment that for the first time alleged Rana was in on the planning of the attacks by a team of 10 terrorists.

Headley, 49, an American citizen, and Rana, 49, a Canadian national who has been in business in Chicago for more than a dozen years, are both in federal custody in Chicago.

Headley's attorney, John Theis, had no comment on the new indictment. A message was left for Rana's attorney, Patrick Blegan.

Retired Pakistani military officer Abdur Rehman Hashim Syed and reputed terrorist leader Ilyas Kashmiri — described as having been in regular contact with Al Qaeda's No. 3, Sheikh Mustafa Abu al-Yazid — also were charged in the new indictment.

The charges were the first for Kashmiri in the case that surfaced with the October arrest of Headley and Rana in Chicago. Syed previously had been charged with involvement in the plans to attack the Danish newspaper Jyllands Posten, which in 2005 printed 12 cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad that sparked outrage in the Muslim world.

Officials says all the defendants were linked to the terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba, translated as Army of the Pure, which has long been involved in violent conflict with India over the disputed Kashmir territory. The Indian government has blamed the group for the Mumbai attacks.

The charges against Headley, formerly named Daood Gilani, are the same as those included by the government in a criminal information filed in federal court last fall. But the charges against Rana have been expanded to include participation in the Mumbai attacks.

Prosecutors have alleged that in a secretly recorded conversation in September 2009, Rana and Headley discussed the possible attack in Denmark as well as attacks on Bollywood, the Indian film industry; Somnath, a temple; and Shiv Sena, a political party with strains of Hindu nationalism.

They said Headley and Rana also spoke about a meeting between Rana and a man they called "Pasha" days before 10 gunmen rampaged through Mumbai. Prosecutors said Pasha is Syed. They said Syed helped put Headley in touch with Kashmiri, described as a leader of the terrorist group Harakat-ul Jihad Islami.

Kasab Retracts Confession

MUMBAI, India -- The accused gunman in last year's bloody siege of Mumbai retracted his detailed confession Friday, saying police tortured him into admitting his role in the attacks that left 166 people dead.

Mohammed Ajmal Kasab, 21, who is being tried in a special court and was photographed carrying an assault rifle during the attack on Mumbai's main train station, told the judge he came to Mumbai as a tourist and was arrested 20 days before the siege began.

On the day the attacks started, Mr. Kasab said, police took him from his cell because he resembled one of the gunmen, shot him to make it look like he had been involved in the violence and re-arrested him.

Friday's statement was not the first reversal from Mr. Kasab.

In February, he told a judge he wanted to attack India in order to free the divided region of Kashmir where Muslim militants are fighting for independence. He later recanted that statement, saying it was obtained under duress.

It was unclear what impact Mr. Kasab's statement would have on the case, and the prosecution brushed it off.

"All the while, I expected that Mr. Kasab was about to take a U-turn in the case," said Ujjwal Nikam, the prosecutor. "He is a military-trained commando. It's not going to affect our case."

In July, Mr. Kasab, who could face the death penalty if convicted, surprised the court when he suddenly confessed, saying he would rather be hanged in this world than face "God's punishment" in the next.

In his confession, he spoke of spraying gunfire into the crowd at the train station and described in detail a network of training camps and safe houses across Pakistan, revealing the names of four men he said were his handlers.

The photo of Kasab casually walking through the station with his rifle has become the enduring image of the attacks.

But Kasab said police tortured him into falsely confessing.

The assault 13 months ago lasted nearly three days and paralyzed India's commercial hub. During the attacks, 10 young men armed with assault rifles stormed two luxury hotels, a Jewish center and the train station. Nine of the gunmen were killed, leaving only Mr. Kasab, who was wounded in a shootout with police, authorities said.

He told the court Friday he was initially arrested last year after wandering around Mumbai late at night looking for a place to stay, and his Pakistani citizenship aroused suspicion.

After he was re-arrested for the Mumbai attack, he said, four white men came to visit him in jail, including David Coleman Headley, who is jailed in Chicago on charges he conspired in the siege. The judge then told Mr. Kasab not to reveal any more details on Headley.

Mr. Headley, the 49-year-old son of an American mother and Pakistani father, is also charged with planning to attack a Danish newspaper.

Five Sentenced For Plotting Bomb Attack on Sears Tower

From CAN:

CNN.com reports that five Muslims in Florida have been sentenced for planning a bombing campaign with Al-Qaeda that included an attack on the Sears Tower and the FBI’s office in Miami.

The highest sentencing was given to the leader of the plot, Narseal Batiste, who was given 13 ½ years in prison plus 35 years of supervision after release.

The plots were thwarted after someone told the FBI that Batiste had tried to recruit him for “jihad” in the U.S., and the Bureau then planted an undercover operative posing as a member of Al-Qaeda to infiltrate Batiste and his network.

The men were arrested before weapons were obtained and their plans were described as “more aspirational than operational.”

Batiste was recorded as pledging allegiance to Osama Bin Laden’s terrorist group and telling the undercover FBI agent that his group needed training and assistance so they could wage a “full ground war” inside the U.S. and “kill all the devils we can,” according to MSNBC.com.

The conviction and sentencing of the five came after two mistrials and the acquitting of two other suspects arrested for allegedly being involved in the plots.

Chicago: Anti-Democracy Hizb ut-Tahrir Group Event in Lombard, IL on December 20

Once again, another village in the Chicago suburbs will be the target of a public event by the anti-democracy, Islamic supremacist organization Hizb ut-Tahrir on Sunday, December 20 – this time using a government-managed community center in Lombard, Illinois.

Hizb ut-Tahrir is an extreme group that is opposed to democracy and religious freedom, has called for the killing of Jews, recently called for whipping of homosexuals and stonings to combat AIDS, has reportedly called for the murder of a university official in Bangladesh, and in July distributed pamphlets in Chicago’s Oak Lawn suburb calling for the “death penalty” for those who leave Islam.

Hizb ut-Tahrir is an international organization that according to a former member Ed Husain, Hizb ut-Tahrir calls for an “expansionist, violent, totalitarian Islamist state.” According to BBC and the Daily Telegraph, Hizb ut-Tahrir has been linked to calls for killing Jews and Hindus, radicalizing individuals to become suicide bombers, and according to the New Statesman has been linked to high-level terrorists.

Hizb ut-Tahrir America is holding its latest group event in the Chicago suburban village of Lombard, Illinois on the subject “Crisis in Pakistan – Current Events & Future Direction.” Hizb ut-Tahrir America opposes the Pakistan government’s military efforts against the Islamic supremacist Taliban terrorists in Waziristan, which is a primary haven for both the Taliban and Al-Qaeda.

In July, the London Times reported on British members of Hizb ut-Tahrir that had been incited to go to Pakistan to seek to influence Pakistan military members and others to instigate a “coup” against the current Pakistan government.

The London Times report described how Hizb ut-Tahrir members’ “aim was to subject Muslim and western countries to Islamic rule under sharia law, ‘by force’ if necessary”… where ” ‘every woman would have to cover up’ and stoning to death for adultery and the chopping off of thieves’ hands would be the law, he said.”

The London Times report added that Hizb ut-Tahrir aims of “Islamic rule would be spread through ‘indoctrination’ and by ‘military means’ if non-Muslim countries refused to bow to it. ‘Waging war’ would be part of the caliphate’s foreign policy.”

Those seeking to be involved in violent Jihad have been drawn to Pakistan, with five Americans from the Northern Virginia suburbs of Washington DC arrested in Pakistan last week; according to CBS News, they sought to promote “jihad.” Hizb ut-Tahrir Pakistan’s manifesto calls for all male children at age 15 to get military “Jihad training” (page 37).

While the village of Lombard is promoting “Peace,” Hizb ut-Tahrir America seeks to use Lombard community facilities to incite Americans in Chicago with its Islamic supremacist perspective of events in Pakistan.

Unlike July 2009, when Hizb ut-Tahrir America rented a private facility (Holiday Inn in Oak Lawn, IL), this time Hizb ut-Tahrir will be renting space from a public building from the Village of Lombard Parks District (similar to Hizb ut-Tahrir Canada’s approach in Mississauga, Canada in July 2009.)

Hizb ut-Tahrir America has rented the Lombard Community Building at 433 East St. Charles Road for their December 20, 2009 event from 5:00 to 6:30 PM Central Time. We are certain that the Village of Lombard Parks District and Lombard Government has no idea who and what Hizb ut-Tahrir is, nor would they even think to inquire.

We urge readers to contact the Lombard government and media to make them aware of this.

Another Mumbai-style attack on the way

THE al-Qaida-affiliated militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba has been actively planning one or more additional Mumbai-style attacks in India.

The claim is based on scouting by a Chicago man recently charged with being a long-time clandestine operative of the group, according to current and former US, Indian and European counterterrorism officials.

FBI and Justice Department officials spent last week in India and Pakistan as part of an urgent effort to head off such an attack, sharing a wealth of information from their investigation into the activities of David Coleman Headley, the officials said.

The new plots, believed to be in the works for months, are most likely against “soft” civilian targets such as hotels or synagogues frequented by Americans, Israelis and other Westerners, the officials said.

But India's National Defense College and other government sites have also been scouted as targets, according to officials and FBI affidavits recently unsealed in Chicago.

The Justice Department last week filed terrorism charges against a third former Pakistani military officer in the Denmark plot.

Those accusations are sure to exacerbate tensions in the region, current and former US and allied officials said. Washington and India have long accused the Pakistani military of maintaining close ties to Lashkar and other militant groups and using them for attacks on India.

Pakistan has long denied those accusations and demanded proof.

Terror Suspect Failed a Test

Terror suspect David Headley was questioned by an airport inspector in August and deceptive answers about his travels abroad helped officials begin to unravel Mr. Headley's alleged double life.

The 49-year-old Chicago man was charged this week for helping plot the terror attack in Mumbai a year ago that killed 166 people.

Federal authorities, already suspicious of him, used his return to the U.S. this summer as an opportunity, according to officials.

A border inspector asked Mr. Headley about his overseas travel, according to court records and people familiar with the case.

Mr. Headley said he was working for a company called First World Immigration Service. First World is a business that allegedly provided Mr. Headley with cover as he traveled to scout terrorist targets for Lashkar-e-Taiba, the group responsible for the November 2008 assault in Mumbai, according to the federal charges.

Agents searched Mr. Headley's luggage and found it "contained no papers or other documents relating to such a business," according to court documents. They also searched tax records and found no record of income paid to Mr. Headley by the company, court records show.

U.S. officials said Tuesday the questioning at the airport gave a significant boost to the investigation.

Mr. Headley was returning to the U.S. from a trip to Denmark in which he was scouting potential targets, authorities alleged. He is also being charged with planning an armed assault on a Danish newspaper that published cartoons of the Muslim Prophet Muhammad.

Authorities said little more about the airport interview, including where it happened or why they had become suspicious of Mr. Headley. But court records showed that federal surveillance of Mr. Headley, who is an American, accelerated afterward.

Mr. Headley's case is the most potent example of a U.S. born radical. Law enforcement and terrorism specialists said Lashkar's alleged deployment of Mr. Headley underscored the usefulness of recruits with U.S. passports in terror plots.

Mr. Headley traveled to India and Pakistan over nearly two years to videotape targets and brief his co-conspirators in the Mumbai attacks, according to the federal charges.

Westerners have largely played supporting roles in terror activities, but Mr. Headley's ability to travel freely on a U.S. passport to Pakistan, India and Denmark gave him high value, a U.S. law enforcement official said.

"It's exactly the way you'd think al Qaeda would want to use operatives," said Evan Kohlmann, who has testified on Lashkar as an expert witness in U.S. and British courts.

Chicago man charged over Mumbai terror attacks

A CHICAGO man already accused of plotting to kill employees of a Danish newspaper was today charged with taking part in the planning of the 2008 terrorist attack on Mumbai, the US Department of Justice (DoJ) said.

David Coleman Headley conducted extensive surveillance of targets in Mumbai for more than two years preceding the attack on India's largest city that killed about 170 people, the DoJ said in a statement.

Mr Headley, 49, was charged with six counts of conspiracy to bomb public places in India, to murder and maim persons in India and Denmark, to provide material support to foreign terrorist plots, and to provide material support to Pakistani-based terror organization Lashkar-e-Taiba.

He was also charged on six counts of aiding and abetting the murder of US citizens in India.

Mr Headley is the first American to be charged.

In October, Mr Headley and Tahawwur Hussain Rana, 48, were alleged to have been involved in a plot they codenamed the “Mickey Mouse Project” to attack facilities and employees of Morgenavisen Jyllands-Posten, a Danish newspaper that offended many Muslims with its Mohammed cartoons.

Sears Tower jihad plotter gets 6 years in jail

An update on this story. "Florida Man Convicted in Chicago Sears Tower Terror Plot Gets 6 Years," from Fox News, November 18:
MIAMI -- A Miami man convicted of plotting to destroy Chicago's Sears Tower and bomb FBI offices has been sentenced to six years in federal prison.
U.S. District Judge Joan Lenard imposed the sentence Wednesday on 24-year-old Burson Augustin.
Four other men are scheduled to be sentenced over the next three days.
Prosecutors sought the maximum 30-year sentence for Augustin. Lenard ruled that sentencing terrorism enhancements should not apply to Augustin, who was not the leader.
The men were convicted in May of supporting Al Qaeda, conspiring to wage war on the U.S. and other charges.
There were two mistrials, and two other men were acquitted. All denied plotting terror attacks....

U.S. Now Exports Terror: American Linked to Mumbai Attack

by Rusty Shackleford

Since the 9/11 attacks, conventional wisdom has held that acts of terror on U.S. soil would most likely come from abroad.

Much time and effort have been spent on beefing up border security to make sure the next Mohammad Atta never reaches the homeland.

Yet the massacre at Fort Hood by Major Nidal Hasan underscored what has long been known in counterterrorism circles: Muslims born and raised in the U.S. might become radicalized and perpetrate acts of terror here at home, and more resources need to be directed inward.

Now, a string of arrests by the FBI over the past year has raised awareness of a new phenomenon: there exist Americans who wish to commit acts of terror abroad.

For the most part, those arrested have been individuals who wished to join foreign jihadi groups as foot soldiers. Many of those attempts have failed.

Boston’s Tarek Mehanna went to Yemen to join al-Qaeda but was rebuffed. His friend Ahmad Abousamra traveled to Pakistan and Iraq for the same purpose and also failed. Similarly, several young men from North Carolina made a pilgrimage to the Palestinian territories to join in jihad against Israel, but they seem to have spent the majority of their time seeing the sights in Cairo.

Late last month, two arrests in Chicago seemed to confirm a pattern of American citizens wishing to engage in acts of terror abroad but failing.

But new reports from India indicate that at least one of the two arrested may have been involved in planning the coordinated attacks in Mumbai last year. Those attacks killed 173 people and have been described as India’s 9/11.

If these reports pan out, then a Chicago-area man who legally changed his name from Daood Gilani to David Headley — and who had previously been indicted for planning a foiled terror attack against Denmark’s Jylland Posten newspaper as “revenge” for printing cartoons of the prophet Mohammad — conducted surveillance of targets in Mumbai.

He helped facilitate the massacre in which innocent civilians were methodically gunned down at the real-time urging of their Lashkar-e-Taiba controllers from Pakistan.

Two Americans Arrested in Denmark for Terror Plot

From CAN:

The Justice Department has announced that two people in Chicago have been arrested for planning attacks in Denmark on a newspaper for publishing cartoons mocking the Prophet Mohammed in 2005.

David Coleman Headley was arrested on October 3 as he headed to Pakistan. He conducted surveillance on the targets during two trips to Denmark in January and July. Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a Pakistani, was arrested, at his home on October 18.

The press release states that at least three other people in Pakistan were involved in the plot.

Two of them are said by the Justice Department to be members of the Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist group accused of carrying out the December 2008 bombings in Mumbai, India and one is in Waziristan working with an Al-Qaeda affiliate called Harakut-ul-Islami.

“The public should be reassured that there was no imminent danger in the Chicago area.

However, law enforcement has the duty to be vigilant to guard against not just those who would carry out attacks here on our soil but those who plot on our soil to help carry out violent attacks overseas,” the press release quoted Patrick J. Fitzgerald, the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois as saying.

The Long War Journal reported that the attack consisting of an assault on the staff of the newspaper.

Chicago Men In Terror Case Also Planned India Attack, Prosecutors Say

Two Chicago men charged with scheming to launch a terrorist attack on a Danish newspaper also discussed an attack on a military college in India, federal prosecutors said Tuesday.

Prosecutors made the allegation in court papers as U.S. Magistrate Judge Nan Nolan prepared for a hearing to consider release of one of the men, Tahawwura Rana, on bond.

Prosecutors said Mr. Rana discussed with the other man charged in the case, David Headley, the possibility of an attack on the National Defense College of India.

The court papers did not provide more information on the alleged discussion and no other details were immediately available.

The document also said that Mr. Rana, who operates a Chicago immigration service, discussed the possibility of slipping people into the U.S. illegally with an unnamed individual belonging to a Pakistan-based terrorist organization.

Charges that the two men plotted to attack Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten were unsealed last week by federal prosecutors. The newspaper sparked outrage throughout the Muslim world in 2005 by publishing 12 cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad. Muslims considered the cartoons extremely disrespectful.

Prosecutors have said Mr. Headley, whose former name was Daood Gilani, envisioned a plan to murder a cartoonist and the newspaper's former cultural editor.

Defense attorney Patrick Blegen has said that Mr. Rana--a Canadian national who was born in Pakistan and also owns a grocery store on Chicago's north side--was merely an innocent dupe of Mr. Headley or did not take Mr. Headley's plans seriously.

Prosecutors said the conversations about potential targets showed that Mr. Headley was serious.

Mr. Headley's attorney has said he has no comment on the case.

Muhammad Cartoonist Defiant in Face of Threats

A few pen strokes thrust Kurt Westergaard into the midst of an international crisis, exposing him to death threats and an alleged assassination plot.

Terror charges brought against two Chicago men this week show the 74-year-old Dane remains a potential target for extremists, four years after he drew a caricature of the Prophet Muhammad wearing a bomb-shaped turban.

"I am an old man so I am not so afraid anymore," Westergaard said Tuesday in an interview with Jyllands-Posten, the Danish newspaper that first published his drawing in September 2005 along with 11 other cartoons of Muhammad.

The drawings triggered an uproar a few months later when Danish and other Western embassies in several Muslim countries were torched by angry protesters who felt the cartoons had profoundly insulted Islam.

Islamic law generally opposes any depiction of the prophet, even favorable, for fear it could lead to idolatry.

Westergaard has said it took him 45 minutes to make the drawing, considered by many Muslims to be the most offensive of the 12 cartoons. He has rejected calls to apologize to Muslims, saying poking fun at religious symbols is protected by Denmark's freedom of speech.

The drawing was meant to illustrate that extremists draw "spiritual ammunition from Islam," but not criticize the religion as a whole, he told broadcaster DR in February 2008 after Danish police uncovered an alleged plot to kill him.

"I realize that when issues of religion are involved emotions run high, and all religions have their symbols, which possess great importance," he said. "But when you live in a secularized society, it's clear that religion can't demand some sort of special status. ... "I have a problem with the fact that we have people from another culture who don't accept that we use religious elements in a drawing."

The cartoon uproar forced Westergaard underground, living under the protection of Denmark's intelligence agency, PET.

"For my wife and I, it's like a kind of dark depression has descended on us," he told DR.

Chicago: Two misunderstanders of Islam charged for jihad terror plots

Cartoon Rage Update. "US charges two over 'terror plot,'" from the BBC, October 27
Two men in the US city of Chicago have been charged with planning attacks on foreign targets, the US justice department has said.

David Coleman Headley, 49, and Tahawwur Hussain Rana, 48, were both arrested earlier this month.

Among their alleged targets was a Danish newspaper that printed a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed in 2005, sparking angry protests from Muslims.

Prosecutors say Mr Headley travelled to Denmark twice to plan an attack.

The justice department said it had uncovered "a serious plot against overseas targets".

Mr Headley, who changed his name from Daood Gilani in 2006, was arrested on 3 October as he was about to travel to Pakistan.

He has been charged with "conspiracy to commit terrorist acts involving murder and maiming" outside the US and also with conspiracy to provide material support for the attack.

Prosecutors allege he visited the Copenhagen and Arhus offices of the Jyllands-Posten newspaper, which printed the cartoons, for surveillance purposes.

The charge sheet alleges he also travelled to Pakistan to meet members of the Islamic militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba....

Hizb ut-Tahrir in America

HuT
By Dr. M. Zuhdi Jasser

Actively seeking a Caliphate in the USA.

On July 19, 2009, Hizb ut-Tahrir ("Party of Liberation"; HT) held a recruitment conference at the Hilton Oak Lawn hotel just outside Chicago, Illinois The event was entitled the Fall of Capitalism and the Rise of Islamand reportedly garnered 300 attendees.

While 300 attendees may not make a movement, the meeting is significant and its occurrence should sound warning bells in the Chicago Muslim community and for all Americans. Hizb ut-Tahrir is a harbinger of much deeper efforts to convert Muslim children to an ideology that is rooted in a belief that is contrary to the liberties and ideals that Americans hold dear.

While Hizb ut-Tahrir may be new to most Americans, its roots in the United States date back over a decade to Southern California and Chicago.

The organization was first founded in 1953 by a Palestinian qadi or shari'a judge, and today is a global Islamist network with hundreds of thousands of adherents from England to Indonesia. It actively seeks to create a Caliphate based in shari'a law.

Hizb ut-Tahrir's platform lies at the center of the contest of ideas and what it means to be a Muslim.

Groups like Hizb ut-Tahrir use the entire faith community, or ummah, of Muslims for a specific global political agenda to give susceptible youth an identity that takes precedence over what it is to be American, and our inherent allegiance to the Constitution and its legal system. Western governments created by the people and for the people are in direct conflict with an ideology that proclaims law comes directly from the hand of God and has only one form - their theocratic form.

Islamist organizations like the Council for American Islamic Organizations (CAIR) and many local mosques in Chicago often dismiss Hizb ut-Tahrir and claim that their ideas are "separate" and "marginal" from their own. However, they have made no attempt in these protestations to advocate for the separation of mosque and state. It is our contention at the American Islamic Forum for Democracy (AIFD) that there is no version of political Islam for American Muslims which can coexist with America's founding principles and our Establishment Clause.

To discuss this conference and avoid discussing the dangers of political Islam is to miss the "elephant in the room." HT may condemn terrorism, but Islamist groups like theirs and others often become gateways for the radicalization of youth. Terrorism is merely a tool that Islamists use to reach their goal of a shari'a-law-structured government. Hizb ut-Tahrir is one of the worst offenders amongst them.

The American Islamic Forum for Democracy (AIFD) is actively denouncing Hizb ut-Tahrir's efforts and its ideologies, and calling on Muslims to denounce efforts by HT to gain a foothold in the American Muslim community. The movement to establish the Islamic state will always generate groups like HT until we, Muslims, can truly separate spiritual Islam from the agenda of political Islam.

AIFD maintains that a separation of mosque and state affords Muslims a better opportunity to practice their faith in freedom rather than under the theocratic oppression of Islamists. All American Muslim organizations, including CAIR and ISNA (Islamic Society of North America), need to be on the record that Hizb ut-Tahrir's actions, ideologies and the overriding mission of political Islam are unacceptable to their organizations both as Americans and as Muslims.

Anything less is a tacit acceptance of the overriding goal of Islamism.

Anti-Semitic, Anti-Christian Propaganda on Display at Calphate Conference

Hizb ut-Tahrir
While Hizb ut-Tahrir, a pro-jihadist group which met openly near Chicago last weekend, is surprisingly candid about its desire to re-establish an Islamic Caliphate, literature available at its conference shows the group also views Christians and Jews as untrustworthy enemies of God.

More than a dozen issues of a Hizb ut-Tahrir (HT) newsletter called The Shield were obtained from the conference by the Investigative Project on Terrorism. The publication repeatedly condemns interfaith "outreach initiatives" and shows HT believes in the death penalty for Muslims who leave the faith.

HT pushes a radical ideology that is similar to Al Qaeda, although the organization claims it does not carry out terrorist attacks. It has glorified jihadism and excoriated the terrorist organization Hamas as being too soft on Israel. In a leaflet posted on its website July 1, HT argued that if the Caliphate were in existence, all of "Palestine" would be rid of "the usurpation of the Jewish occupiers" and brought "to the fold of the Islamic state."

Turkish authorities meanwhile, arrested more than 200 HT members Friday, although it is unclear what prompted it. The group is banned in Turkey. Read more ...

Muslims Declare Jihad in Chicago; Obama, Lawmakers Prefer Targeting Americans

Hizb ut-Tahrir
Why are America's legislators criticizing the CIA for hunting down terrorists, while remaining silent on Jihadists blatantly planning to overthrow our Constitution in favor of a Muslim 'Caliphate' here in our nation?

By Jim Kouri, CPP

(The following article is based on reports obtained by the National Association of Chiefs of Police.)

A group obsessed with creating a Caliphate based on Muslim religious law -- Sharia Law -- in the United States and other nations is holding their first US conference today in Chicago.

According to Diane Macedo, news writer for FoxNews.com, the group -- Hizb ut-Tahrir -- is a global Sunni network with reported ties to confessed 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed of Al Qaeda and Iraq's onetime terrorist leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. It has operated discreetly in the U.S. for decades, wrote Macedo.

Today's conference is titled, "The Fall of Capitalism and the Rise of Islam," and it's being held at the Hilton Hotel in a suburb of Chicago. The shocking part of this story is that the majority of US lawmakers are silent about this gathering of avowed enemies of the US Constitution and American values, yet they are voicing their outrage over a CIA proposal to "terminate" terrorist leaders overseas. Islamic Supremacist Group Holds First U.S. Conference

Hizb ut-Tahrir
By Diane Macedo

A group committed to establishing an international Islamic empire and reportedly linked to Al Qaeda is stepping up its Western recruitment efforts by holding its first official conference in the U.S.

Hizb ut-Tahrir is a global Sunni network with reported ties to confessed 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and Al Qaeda in Iraq's onetime leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. It has operated discreetly in the U.S. for decades.

Now, it is coming out of the shadows and openly hosting a July 19 conference entitled, "The Fall of Capitalism and the Rise of Islam," at a posh Hilton hotel in a suburb of Chicago.

Hizb ut-Tahrir insists that it does not engage in terrorism, and it is not recognized by the State Department as a known terror group.

But some terrorism experts say it may be even more dangerous than many groups that are on the terror list.

"Hizb ut-Tahrir is one of the oldest, largest indoctrinating organizations for the ideology known as jihadism," Walid Phares, director of the Future of Terrorism Project at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, told FOXNews.com.

Phares said that Hizb ut-Tahrir, rather than training members to carry out terrorist acts like Al Qaeda, focuses instead on indoctrinating youths between ages of 9 and 18 to absorb the ideology that calls for the formation of an empire — or "khilafah" — that will rule according to Islamic law and condones any means to achieve it, including militant jihad. Note: Fox title, "Islamic Supremacist Group Holds First U.S. Conference," is grossly misleading. Obama and the Chicago Shariah Scammer

These photos of Barack Obama, with his friend and benefactor Salman Ibrahim, were taken in 2004 in the offices of the infamous Sunrise Equities, Chicago. (Click photos to enlarge them)

Ibrahim is the former CEO of Sunrise and is now wanted by the FBI in connection with the Sunrise Equities scam of late 2008 in Chicago. Sunrise Equities, a "shariah complaint" investment firm, shut down in August, 2008 when CEO Salman Ibrahim and other Sunrise officers vanished with approximately $80 million of investor money. In 2004, while Obama was running for US Senate in Illinois, Ibrahim and Sunrise Equities donated some of the own office space to Obama's campaign. Obama used the space as a fundraising hub.

In the top photo, Obama shakes hands with Chicago Alderman Bernard Stone (50th Ward), just prior to a ribbon cutting ceremony for donated office space. In the bottom photo we see the ribbon cutting. The money seems to have gone with them. The Illinois Secretary of State and the FBI are investigating the scandal. More than 100 investors, mostly Muslim, learned in August that they had lost all of their savings to the Sunrise Equities fraud. Many were completely wiped out financially. Sunrise Equities targeted investors who were mostly Pakistani Muslim immigrants. Many the victims had to take out home equity loans to make ends meet.

Molotov cocktail thrown at North Side temple

A Molotov cocktail thrown early today against the wall of one of Chicago's oldest synagogues caused minimal physical damage but worried local Jewish officials, who said the incident could be a response to the latest fighting in the Middle East.

"I can't help but think there's a relationship," said Roger Rudich, president of Temple Sholom of Chicago, 3480 N. Lake Shore Drive.

No one was hurt in the arson that police are investigating as a hate crime. Bomb and arson detectives were at the scene Monday afternoon and the investigation was ongoing, said Chicago police officer Daniel O'Brien.

O'Brien said the fire "extinguished itself, nothing ever caught fire." No suspect was in custody as of Monday afternoon, he said.

"The offender drove off and made a derogatory statement" to a witness, and police were working to obtain and review surveillance equipment in the area, said O'Brien.

Rudich said the incident was not "terribly expensive or damaging," but "it's just so unsettling."

Rudich said the temple is always reviewing its security precautions and in light of this incident, "we'll look at everything again."

Local Jewish community officials said they were not aware of any recent incidents of violence in area temples but wondered if the incident was connected to a rise in problems in the Middle East.

Jay Tcath, senior vice president of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago, said it was not clear if the arson had a global cause.

"Though no suspects have been apprehended and it's premature to unequivocally connect what is happening with this incident, it's hard to avoid the likely connection," he said.

Lonnie Nasatir, regional director for the Anti-Defamation League, said the arson is cause for vigilance.

"We are hoping that it's just one incident and that there are not further copycat incidents," Nasatir said. "We don't know if it has any correlation with what is happening in Gaza. In the last year there have been other anti-Semitic acts that weren't attributed to anything except ant-Semitism."

Jeremy Gorner and Bonnie Miller Rubin contributed to this report.
