 By Pam Meister The news this week should horrify anyone: A woman in Iraq, 51-year-old Samira Ahmed Jassim, confessed to arranging for the rape of 80 women so that she could convince them – shame them – into becoming suicide bombers. Linked to the Ansar al-Sunnah radical Islamist group (weakly called an “insurgent” group in the Herald-Sun article linked above), Jassim admitted in a videotape confession to mentally preparing the women for “martyrdom” operations, passing them on to the terrorists who gave them their explosives, and then took the women – now bombers – to their targets. Take a look at her photo. This woman, who looks much like anyone’s sweet old granny, used Islamic law and tradition as a way to recruit women who, one might guess, wouldn’t dream of “martyring” themselves for her own radical cause. Remind me not to go to her house for milk and cookies. It’s hard for Westerners to understand why these women would have turned to suicide martyrdom after being raped. But unlike the West, men are not considered to be at fault when a rape occurs. By Hamid Ahmed A suicide bomber on a bicycle blew himself up Sunday amid a crowd of demonstrators in northern Iraq who were protesting Israel's airstrikes on Gaza, killing one demonstrator and wounding 16 others, Iraqi police said. The bomber rode his bicycle into the demonstration of about 1,300 people in the center of the northern city of Mosul, said a police officer who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak with news media. The demonstration was organized by the Sunni Iraqi Islamic Party. The party's Mosul spokesman, Yahiya Abid Mahjoub, complained that police and the Iraqi army had not taken security precautions for the demonstration. There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack, the officer said. "The ones who targeted our brothers in Gaza are the same who targeted us in Mosul today. It is well established that Hamas-run television features programming indoctrinating children with a hatred for Israel, Jews and glorifying suicide bombings. Over at the Daily Beast, Gerald Posner posts a series of video clips from the Palestinian Authority that show the same kind of propaganda. The PA, of course, is supposed to be the moderate voice of the Palestinians, recognized by the U.S. as an honest negotiating partner in peace talks. What's worse, Posner claims, is that U.S. aid is being used to in producing the hateful images to children, which include "a steady drumbeat of indoctrination to kill Israelis, with idealized images of virgins who await suicide bombers."  On November 1, 2008, the Iranian website Tabnak, which is identified with Expediency Council Secretary and former IRGC commander Mohsen Rezai, reported that flyers have recently been circulated in Iran calling on the public, especially young people, to sign up for martyrdom operations to be carried out by the Lebanese Hizbullah. The flyer promises registrants that they will become "fighters in the worldwide front against the Global Arrogance [i.e. the U.S.]." Following is a translation of the Tabnak report: "In the recent days and months, forms have been distributed in Tehran and in several of [Iran's] large provinces, titled "[Registration for] Membership in the Lebanese Hizbullah" and "Registration for Martyrdom Operations." [These documents] call on the public, and especially on young people, to join the 'world-wide front against the Global Arrogance [i.e. the U.S.]' by filling out the form and providing an address and [phone] number where they can be reached. "The Hizbullah registration form bears a Tehran address, which has not yet been verified, but the martyrdom operations form bears the name of an organization [that is known to be] active in this sphere, as well as a phone number for further enquiries.  On October 14, 2008, clerics from 28 religious groups in Pakistan held a conference at the Jamia Naeemia madrassa in Lahore. The conference was organized by the Muttahida Ulema Council of Pakistan. In a fatwa agreed by consensus, the clerics declared suicide attacks inside Pakistan to be haram, or forbidden in Islam. The following are excerpts from the 21-point declaration issued by the clerics and distributed to journalists at the end of the conference: "The world of Islam, especially Pakistan, is confronted by such heartrending, dangerous and miserable situations; [the Ulema] express sorrow and anger at the activities of the enemies of Islam which are full of... cruelty, force and despotism, [and] strongly urge Pakistan's residents not to be sad about these situations... they should be ready to confront the shared conspiracies of President [George] Bush, the U.S., India, Israel... and Afghanistan, the child in their arms.... "A great responsibility is thrust upon the Ulema and saints to confront the rulers and their allies who, with the help of our enemies and our own army, are [using] attack planes on our own people to bloody and destroy humans, Pakistanis, homes and farms.  Federal officials notified law enforcement agencies Monday of a potential al-Qaida terrorist attack in which public buildings are targeted by suicide bombers.
According to NBC News, the analysis by the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security describes a scenario where a dozen attackers each carrying 20 kilograms of explosives storm a building, "seal off escape and access points, and occupy it long enough to set and detonate their explosive packages."
In the al-Qaida plan, according to the analysis, suicide terrorists "would be able to enter many publicly accessible buildings easily with little or no resistance from often poorly trained and lightly armed or unarmed security guards, and that an explosion from inside the building would be particularly effective."
The FBI/DHS analysis states that a "recently discovered audio recording of al-Qaida training sessions conducted several years ago" provided detailed instructions on how to carry out such an attack.
The U.S. Office of Intelligence and Analysis told NBC that it has "no credible or specific information that terrorists are planning operations against public buildings in the United States." But the FBI and DHS analysts said they were releasing the note because "it is important for local authorities and building owners and operators to be aware of potential attack tactics."  TORONTO - The Muslim Canadian Congress (MCC) has strongly condemned the truck bombing of the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad, Pakistan, labelling it as yet another act of terror aimed at destabilizing the nascent democratic forces in the country. While evidence is still emerging, the Islamabad attack has all the fingerprints of Islamist terrorism.
The MCC has also expressed dismay that even though the dust has barely settled, apologists of the Taliban and Al-Qaeda have started spreading conspiracy theories in an attempt to deflect criticism from the Jihadis. Rather than categorically denouncing the terrorists and their Islamist Jihadi doctrine, many Islamists are portraying the Jihadis as if they were some sort of a liberation movement.
As Muslims, we are dismayed by voices within our community that apologize for these dastardly acts and view the Taliban as some sort of latter day Sandanistas. As Canadians, we are concerned for a Pakistan that is gradually succumbing to Islamist terror groups armed and aided by ideology and finances from the Middle East.
For too long, members of various ethnic and sectarian Muslim communities have chosen to fence-sit or worse, provide statements of support to the Taliban and their nexus of supporters. The latest suicide bombing in Islamabad is yet another reminder that regardless of Muslim grievance, real or imagined, such nihilistic acts of violence have further marginalized Muslims globally.
We urge individuals of conscience to exert pressure on Pakistani groups and institutions who still view the Taliban as a viable foreign policy imperative in Kashmir and Afghanistan. The Taliban are instead domestic enforcers and supporters of reactionary, anti-democratic Islamist groups. It is the dishonest posturing of pseudo-liberal elite Pakistanis and their fascist Islamist allies that provides sustenance to the militant groups responsible for such acts.
While Pakistan's liberal elites have succumbed to the most vile conspiracy theories that blame every ill on the USA, the Islamists profit immensely from this intellectual bankruptcy and work to sabotage the new government in Islamabad. We urge people of conscience to speak out against this dishonest narrative of false victim-hood that seeks to obfuscate the barbaric acts of the Taliban under the guise of pseudo-liberal double speak.
Murderers who cannot even respect the sanctity of the month of Ramzan, a month of physical abstinence and spiritual introspection for millions of Muslims, and in stead continue to engage in their savagery should be prosecuted and their apologists confronted at any and every debate possible. THE streets outside Islamabad's Marriott Hotel were littered with bodies and burned-out vehicles today, while weeping survivors in blood-soaked clothes searched for friends and relatives.
An AFP photographer who reached the hotel minutes after a huge truck bombing heard cries for help from inside the burning building, where many people leapt to their deaths from upper floors trying to escape the flames.
The restaurants of the five-star establishment had been packed with Muslims breaking the daily Ramadan fast, and with foreigners who considered the hotel one of the few safe places to dine in the Pakistani capital.
"It was like the hotel collapsed, and the roof of the kitchen fell with a huge bang," said a stunned chef sitting among the debris, his white overalls stained red with blood.
"There were lot of people working in the kitchen and many customers in the restaurants, I don't know what happened to them."
A Polish man wearing just a pair of trousers and clutching his shirt in his hands said he was looking for five people who were with him at the hotel when the bomb went off.
Hotel staff set up a makeshift first aid post in the parking lot, as police commandos dressed in black began cordoning off the blast site.
Police said a suicide bomber detonated a truck full of explosives at the entrance to the hotel, killing at least 60 people and injuring more than 200.
Mohammad Jamil, who was walking past the hotel at the time, said the truck exploded in a fireball and sailed into the air. The force of the blast, which was heard for miles around, knocked him over.
"For a few seconds I was in shock and did not know what had happened. Then I remembered the deafening noise, and how the blast just tipped me over," he said.
A cloud of smoke swirled over the hotel in the centre of the city, giving off a noxious smell of burning plastic and wires. The blast could be heard across Islamabad, and its force knocked out windows of buildings hundreds of metres away.
Fire engines tried to douse the giant flames leaping from the glass facade of the hotel, and a fleet of ambulances ferried the injured to hospital.
"Get away from this place, the building may collapse any time," police officers shouted at people gathered in front of the burning building.
The hotel's owner, Sadruddin Hashwani, who was among the crowd, said he was heartbroken to see the loss of human life at his establishment.
"Allah gave me all this and I am not disturbed at the material loss, but I am really disturbed over the loss of innocent people's lives there," he said.
"Most of the people inside the hotel were there to earn livelihoods for their families."

Hasib Hussein, a gawky 18-year-old with soft eyes, looks imploringly at the authoritative figure of Sidique Khan. "Sidique ... wait ... ," he says, with a voice full of fear and uncertainty. The older man calms the boy with a bear hug. "There is nothing to fear in death, Hasib," he says. "When the time comes, we'll face towards Makkah together, as one." He looks Hussein in the eyes. Two suicide bombers blew themselves up outside Pakistan's main army munitions factory overnight, killing 64 workers.
In the second bombing to rock the feuding Coalition Government since president Pervez Musharraf resigned on Monday, the attackers struck a crowd of workers leaving the huge complex in Wah, 32km west of Islamabad, after their shift.
The Taliban claimed responsibility and threatened to carry out more suicide bombings if an army offensive against militants near the Afghan border was not stopped.
"It's a massive attack," local police chief Nasir Durrani said.
"Two men apparently blew themselves up outside the factory during a shift change. The bombers were on foot and they exploded themselves less than a minute apart."
"The death toll has gone up to 64," local police officer Shafiq Ahmed said.
Earlier the factory in a statement put the toll at 59 dead and 67 wounded.
Workers were streaming through the gates of the tightly guarded factory during a shift change when the two bombs exploded. The force of the explosions knocked many people to the ground and sprayed others with shrapnel.
"I looked back and saw the limbs of my colleagues flying through the air," said Shahid Bhatti, 29, his clothes soaked in blood.
Emergency workers with plastic bags on their hands lifted mangled and blackened corpses onto stretchers, while forensic teams picked through scraps of flesh and scattered shoes.
The Pakistani Ordnance Factories at Wah is a cluster of about 20 industrial units producing artillery, tank and anti-aircraft ammunition for the Pakistani armed forces. It employs 25,000 to 30,000 workers.
Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani appealed to MPs to urgently draw up a strategy against terrorism "even if you have to sit together for a week".
US President George W Bush called Mr Gilani to express sympathy for those killed in recent terrorist attacks in Pakistan.
The two men "reaffirmed their mutual support for going after these extremists that are a threat to both Pakistan, the United States and the entire world," said Gordon Johndroe, spokesman for the White House's National Security Council.
Maulvi Umar, a spokesman for Pakistani Taliban groups, said the arms factory attack was to avenge airstrikes on militants in Bajur, an extremist stronghold in the mountainous frontier region.
The blasts came two days after a suicide bomber attacked a hospital in the northwestern town of Dera Ismail Khan on Tuesday, killing 30 people.

Minutes later a man, also laden with explosives, attacks the rescue workers who rushed to the scene in Diyala province, north of Baghdad. Thirty-two people are killed and 52 wounded. The co-ordinated bombings that ripped through the town of Baladruz in May are one of twelve attacks involving thirteen women suicide bombers to strike Diyala so far this year – a huge jump, signalling a new tactic by insurgents. US officials suspect that al-Qaeda has built a network of cells that recruit women and turn them into killers. Women are the perfect weapon in a country where it is frowned upon culturally for a man even to approach a woman without her husband or father in tow, let alone frisk her for weapons at one of the many checkpoints that are the bombers’ favourite targets. By Amir Shah KABUL, Afghanistan - A car bomb ripped through the front wall of the Indian Embassy in central Kabul on Monday, killing 40 people in the deadliest attack in Afghanistan's capital since the fall of the Taliban, officials said. The massive explosion detonated by a suicide bomber damaged two embassy vehicles entering the compound, near where dozens of Afghan men line up every morning to apply for visas. The embassy is located on a busy, tree-lined street near Afghanistan's Interior Ministry in the city center that is protected on both ends by police checkpoints. Several nearby shops were damaged or destroyed in the blast, and smoldering ruins covered the street. The explosion rattled much of the Afghan capital. Shortly after the attack, a woman ran out of a Kabul hospital screaming, crying and hitting her face with both of her hands. The family of Shehzad Tanweer and 400 guests will 'celebrate his life' and 'remember him as a martyr' at a village in Pakistan. Tanweer, 22, along with Mohammad Sidique Khan, 30, Hasib Hussain, 18, and 19-year-old Jermaine Lindsay, died when they detonated rucksack bombs on three crowded Tube trains and a No.30 bus. Tanweer's uncle, 42-year-old property developer Tahir Pervez, is organising the celebration in which verses of the Koran will be read out then curry and rice distributed at his home in Samundari. 'The party is kept very secret from people outside the village but everyone knows it happens every year,' said one villager who asked not be named. 'People are invited to join in blessing Shehzad Tanweer's soul by reading verses from the Koran and they call on us to remember Shehzad as a shahid (martyr).' The gathering has twice been held in secret - yards from Aldgate bomber Tanweer's grave which is fiercely protected from outsiders. The Israeli military says it has captured the mastermind of the deadliest suicide bombing of the Palestinian uprising. Omar Jabar had been on the run since the March 2002 bombing at a hotel in the Israeli city of Netanya. In the attack, the bomber blew himself up during a dinner celebrating the Jewish holiday of Passover. Thirty people were killed and nearly 150 were wounded. The attack sparked a large Israeli military operation in the West Bank. The army says Jabar planned the attack and dispatched the bomber to the hotel. The worshippers were gathered at a cafe about a half mile from the Imam Hussein shrine, one of the holiest sites for Shiites.
