Tampa Mayor Iorio to No Longer Award Radical Group CAIR with Proclamations

DECISION MADE FOLLOWING INFORMATION MAYOR RECEIVED FROM AAH CONCERNING CAIR’S HAMAS TIES

AAH
(Tampa, FL) Yesterday, June 9, 2009, Americans Against Hate (AAH) Chairman Joe Kaufman received a call from Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio’s office informing him that the Mayor will no longer be issuing any proclamations to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).

The past week, Kaufman had been speaking with the Mayor’s office and had sent information detailing CAIR’s involvement with the terrorist group Hamas and CAIR’s stated support for Hamas. Kaufman showed proof that CAIR was named a co-conspirator in a recent Hamas fundraising terrorism trial and that the FBI recently cut ties with CAIR.

Kaufman had previously called on the Mayor to rescind her November 15, 2008 proclamation for “CAIR Day,” an award she had given to the Tampa office of CAIR at least the last four years.

A member of Mayor Iorio’s staff, Santiago Corrado, said that, while the Mayor would not rescind any prior proclamations – because the “CAIR Days” had already taken place and she could not go back in time and change the calendar – she would no longer sign any further proclamations to the group in the future.

Kaufman stated, “While we had wished Mayor Iorio would rescind the past proclamations from CAIR, we are thankful that no more proclamations will be awarded to the group. No group that has ties to overseas terrorists should receive any type of award, proclamation or otherwise.” Read more ...

Tampa Mayor Honors Extremism: "CAIR Day" is coming to town.

Pam Iorio
By Joe Kaufman

In April of 2007, Pam Iorio was sworn into office for her second term as Mayor of Tampa Bay, Florida, given the confidence of Tampa’s citizens that she will help protect them from harm. Yet every year for at least the last four years of the six-plus years she has served, Mayor Iorio has honored CAIR, a radical Muslim organization, with a Proclamation naming a day for the group. Is the Mayor just trying to placate a fringe constituency or has she submitted to terror?

Tampa has had an Islamic terrorism problem for more than two decades. Elements of Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood have infected the population, rendering it vulnerable to those who wish to do harm to the city.

From August of 1986 till February of 2003, when he was taken into custody by law enforcement, Sami Al-Arian, a university professor, built an entire PIJ infrastructure within the Tampa area. He did so in the guise of a charity, a think tank, a children’s school and a mosque -- the latter two still in existence.

Youssef Megahed and Ahmed Mohamed, Tampa-area university students, were arrested in South Carolina, in August of 2007, and indicted for possession of explosive materials which were found in the trunk of their car. Mohamed later pled guilty to a separate charge of trying to assist terrorists by creating a video demonstrating how to use a remote-controlled toy to detonate a bomb. Read more ...

Tampa Mayor Ignores Terror Ties, Declares "CAIR DAY"

AAH
ANTI-HATE GROUP CALLS FOR MAYOR IORIO TO RESCIND PROCLAMATION

(Tampa, FL) Citing CAIR’s terrorism ties, Americans Against Hate (AAH) has created an online petition calling on Tampa Bay, Florida Mayor Pam Iorio to rescind a Proclamation she signed last Saturday declaring November 15, 2008 “CAIR Day.”

AAH Chairman Joe Kaufman stated, “CAIR’s ties to Hamas and other terror-related entities are well documented. Mayor Iorio, please do not ignore the facts about CAIR. We urge you to withdraw your Proclamation and to discontinue any future tributes towards CAIR.”

This was at least the fourth year in a row that Mayor Iorio has issued a Proclamation for “CAIR Day.”

To sign AAH’s petition to Mayor Iorio to withdraw the Proclamation, go to: www.petitiononline.com/CAIRday/petition.html.

Joe Kaufman is available for interview. E-mail: info@americansagainsthate.org.

Tampa Mayor Proclaims November 15th, 2008: "CAIR Day"

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) held its 6th annual banquet Saturday at the Tampa Convention Center. Speakers included Georgetown University professor John Esposito and U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, the first Muslim in Congress.

Ellison detailed some of the challenges that Muslims faced during the campaign, including two Muslim women wearing hijabs being forbidden by the Obama campaign from standing behind the candidate at a Detroit rally.

One way that non-Muslims tried to define Muslims during the campaign was through mass distribution of the DVD Obsession, which characterizes some members of the faith as violent extremists. But a University of South Florida religious studies graduate student, Catherine Lafuente, said propaganda like that won’t influence her. She is not a Muslim and her father died in the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center.

A civil rights award was presented to the Florida Immigrant Advocacy Center, and WMNF received a community service award. Maritza Betancourt is the city of Tampa’s Human Rights Investigator in the Division of Community Affairs. She read a proclamation from Mayor Pam Iorio.

"By virtue of the authority vested in me as mayor of the city of Tampa, I do hereby proclaim November 15, 2008, as ‘Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) Day’ in the city of Tampa, Florida." Read more ...
