 IS little Mikey really a terrorist? That is the question America is asking after it emerged that the eight-year-old Cub Scout from New Jersey is frisked every time he flies because his name is on a US terror watchlist.
Michael "Mikey" Hicks, whose father is a US Navy veteran and mother a photojournalist who has flown with the US vice-president, has been the target of extra security measures at airports since he was 2.
"Why would a kid be a terrorist?" he asks. Michael is not on the US Government's "no-fly" list of 2,500 people considered too dangerous to be allowed into the air. However, his name appears to be among, or to closely match, one of the 13,500 on the "selectee" list who are singled out for extra airport security. His parents first learnt of his status when they could not get him a seat for a flight to Florida because, as an airline official explained, he was "on the list". He was patted down for the first time aged 2 as he passed through Newark airport in New Jersey. Michael has been asked to see the supervisor whenever he checks in for a flight. On a recent trip to the Bahamas he was frisked on the way out and searched more aggressively on the return flight. Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who is charged with trying to explode a bomb, was identified as a possible problem when his father in Nigeria alerted the US Embassy that he had expressed extreme views before disappearing. The US Government added Mr Abdulmutallab to the 550,000-name Terrorist Identities Datamart Environment database. But his name was not added to the "no-fly" list or the "selectee" list, so he was able to get on a US-bound plane without attracting extra attention. Hundreds of people have been added to these lists since the breakdown was identified. The United States, though, is deeply reluctant to start profiling passengers by singling out Muslims.
Instead the Obama Administration has taken an intermediate step by ordering full-body pat-downs for all US-bound passengers from Nigeria and 13 other countries where the US suspects that terrorists operate. On its website, the Transportation Security Administration, which is responsible for airport security, insists that no eight-year-old boy is on the "no-fly" list. "Airlines can and should automatically deselect any eight-year-olds out there that appear to be on a watchlist," it says. "Whether you're 8 or 80 the most common occurrence is name confusion and individuals are told they are on the no-fly list when, in fact, they are not." Michael's mother, Najlah Feanny Hicks, has enlisted the help of her congressman to get the listing removed. "You could have seen that he was 2; that he was 3, 4 or 5. Now it's scary because he's 8.  WASHINGTON: The suicide bomber who killed eight people inside a CIA base in Afghanistan was a Jordan-born terrorist double-agent who had been invited to the base because he claimed to have information targeting Osama bin Laden's second-in-command. The bomber had been recruited by the Jordanian intelligence service and taken to Afghanistan to infiltrate al-Qa'ida by posing as a foreign jihadi, US officials said. The attacker, a physician-turned-mole, had been recruited to infiltrate al-Qa'ida's senior circles and had gained the trust of his CIA and Jordanian handlers with a stream of useful intelligence leads, two former senior officials briefed on the agency's internal investigation told The Washington Post. His track record as an informant apparently allowed him to enter a key CIA post without a thorough search, the sources said. An Afghan security official identified the bomber as Hammam Khalil Abu Mallal al-Balawi, also known as Abu Dujana al-Khurasani. The Pakistani Taliban also claimed Balawi was the bomber, Arabic-language websites reported. The bomber appears to have been invited to an operational planning meeting on al-Qa'ida, a former senior US intelligence official said. "It looks like an al-Qa'ida double-agent," the former official said. "It's very sophisticated for a terrorist group that's supposedly on the run." The blast on December 30 killed four CIA officers, including the Khost base chief; three CIA contractors; and Mr bin Zeid, officials said. Six CIA employees were wounded in the attack. The Al Jazeera television network reported the bomber had initially been recruited to provide intelligence on the whereabouts of bin Laden's top deputy, Ayman al Zawahiri. The CIA's deputy chief of station from Kabul travelled to the meeting at the CIA Khost base, Forward Operating Base Chapman, according to former intelligence officials, pointing to the meeting's importance. The officer was wounded in the attack, according to informed sources. Both the Pakistani Taliban and the Afghan Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack. The Afghan Taliban fights alongside an array of militants, including the Haqqani network, an Islamic extremist group that operates in Afghanistan and Pakistan and maintains close ties to al-Qa'ida. The US and Jordanian intelligence services have worked closely together for years, said a former senior intelligence official. "There's a confidence level with them," the former official said. Officials said Balawi had been jointly managed by US and Jordanian agencies and had provided "actionable intelligence" over several weeks of undercover work along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. "This is someone they obviously trusted very, very much," a former official said. Balawi was an active recruiter and an "elite writer" on al-Qa'ida's password-protected al-Hisba website, where he went by the name Abu Dujana al-Khurasani, according to the journal of the US Military Academy at West Point's Combating Terrorism Centre. In a posting on the site in May 2007, Balawi sought to persuade people from a variety of backgrounds, including African-Americans, Native Americans, Vietnamese and poor immigrants, to join the fight against their "oppressor", the US, the West Point analysts found. Balawi had studied medicine in Turkey with government funding, according to a translation of the Jordanian website Jerasa News by the Middle East Media Research Institute. He left Jordan about a year ago after being detained for a few months by Jordanian intelligence officers.

 A shopkeeper from Bethlehem who was branded a terrorist in Sacha Baron Cohen's film Bruno is seeking $110m (£67.5m) in damages. Ayman Abu Aita is suing Baron Cohen, US talk show host David Letterman and others for libel and slander according to a lawsuit filed in the District of Columbia federal court last week. The actor and comic Baron Cohen plays a gay Austrian fashion journalist in the film, which was released in the UK in July. Keen to become what he calls "the most famous Austrian since Hitler," Bruno travels to the middle east, and in a short interview with Abu Aita, asks to be kidnapped in an attempt to become famous. A caption labels Abu Aita as a member of the militant al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade, the armed wing of the Fatah movement. He is a member of the board of the Holy Land trust, a non-profit organisation that works on Palestinian community-building. Cohen was interviewed on David Letterman's talkshow in the US, and said finding a "terrorist" to interview for the movie took several months and some help from a CIA contact. He said he had feared for his safety during the interview with Abu Aita, which he claimed took place at a secret location. According to the lawsuit, however, the interview with Abu Aita took place at a hotel chosen by Cohen in a part of the West Bank that was under Israeli military control. The film's distributor, NBC Universal, and the director, Larry Charles, are also named in the proceedings. Abu Aita case is that before the film he "enjoyed a good reputation for honesty and a peaceable nature" in his community. His lawyers write that any accusations or insinuations that Abu Aita is or ever was associated with the al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade, or any other terrorist activity, is "utterly false and untrue." His US lawyer, Joseph Peter Drennan, said Abu Aita was never offered a release to sign to appear in the film. "This is an important lawsuit because it is about the dignity of a specific person. It is about his reputation, about his standing in the community." Drennan said he expects a hearing in late January. Hatem Abu Ahmad, Abu Aita's Arab-Israeli lawyer, said Baron Cohen made millions "on the back of my client." His 2006 film Borat also attracted lawsuits, including one for $30m from two residents of the Romanian hamlet where Borat's "home town" scenes were filmed. Most of the cases were thrown out.  AUSTRALIA'S most notorious terrorist Willie Brigitte will be free from jail next year, having served less than half his sentence for conspiring to blow up the nation's only nuclear reactor and the power grid. Caribbean-born Muslim convert Brigitte made headlines in 2007 when he was sentenced in France, following his arrest in Sydney, to a maximum nine years in jail for joining an al-Qaeda-backed Pakistani terror cell out to bomb Lucas Heights nuclear plant, the national electricity grid and/or a military base. But The Daily Telegraph can reveal that the French Justice Ministry is considering releasing the 41-year-old on an early release good behaviour plan - possibly in the new year. He is expected to immediately leave France for the Middle East, with Australia definitely off his itinerary. Authorities close to his case in Paris said the decision would no doubt cause some diplomatic ructions in Australia but that the judiciary was a separate arm of the state. "He will be free next year, it was nine years but with good behaviour," Mr Durimel said. "Of course he is happy. He had no problem in prison, he had good behaviour and when people are of good behaviour they may leave early." Mr Durimel visited Brigitte in his maximum security cell in a complex outside Paris in the past couple of months to break the news. "He is very angry because he thinks that the Australian authorities pursued him for a political purpose. He always said he was not a terrorist and that the file was empty but for him it was a political decision and not a judicial decision," Mr Durimel said. Brigitte was born on the Caribbean island of Guadaloupe, a French territory, to affluent parents. He joined the navy in 1989 but quit four years later and moved to Paris. There he embraced a radical form of Islam and began associating with members of Algeria's Islamist extremist Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat. He ran survival training lessons in the forests outside Paris for those wishing to fight for the Taliban in Afghanistan. Twice divorced, he moved to Pakistan in 2001 following the September 11 bombings. It was there he began to train in earnest for jihad with other foreigners at a base run by the al-Qaeda-backed Lashkar-e-Toiba, as they all awaited for their instructions to attack the West. He later moved back to Paris but in May 2003 was given money and instructions to move to Sydney and make contact with an established terror cell and await further instructions. Ten days after he arrived in Sydney he married his third wife, unsuspecting army reservist and recent Muslim convert Melanie Brown. She said she only became suspicious of her husband when he continuously questioned her about her time as a signaller in East Timor, the military equipment she used and her knowledge of army bases. She later sought to downplay the admission. He moved about in Lakemba in Sydney's southwest, with authorities oblivious to his background or intent. He worked at a takeaway shop and attended a local mosque. Then he made contact with Sydney architect Faheem Khalid Lodhi. The Pakistan-born architect was central to the plot to bomb a major icon such as the nuclear plant, Pine Gap spy base in central Australia, the national electricity grid or Holsworthy barracks. The plot was in its infancy when the French authorities discovered Brigitte had travelled to Australia and requested from the Australian Embassy any details of his travel. The request was initially ignored so the French sent ASIO a message, but it was a public holiday and the fax for urgent assistance was left on a machine in Canberra. About 10 days later Brigitte was arrested on immigration irregularities and was detained - and his full background revealed. Brigitte was deported in October and during interrogation said he was trained as a bombmaker and dispatched to cause death and destruction. The Australian
 The Iraqis just won’t let up. Whatever they have on the Assad regime must be shocking and credible. Members of the parliament are saying that they have proof of a direct Syrian role in the August 19 bombings in Baghdad, consisting of confessions from captured terrorists, wiretaps and photos of terrorist training camps in Syria. One MP who is close to al-Maliki says they also have documentation of the routes the terrorists are using to reach Iraq from Syria. The Iraqis are going to be submitting this evidence to a U.N. envoy.

 New York City Council member Charles Barron, who also serves as the Chair of the Higher Education Committee, helped lead a convoy with 200 activists to Gaza this summer for a group that openly advocates for the terrorist organization Hamas. Barron (D-Brooklyn) sought advice from the city's Conflict of Interest Board (COIB) prior to his trip: Is it permissible for the group to pay for his travel expenses? A COIB attorney said it "appears that the trip will serve a City purpose," based on the representation Barron offered – that the visit to Gaza would involve delivering relief and medical supplies and meeting "with leaders of charitable organizations, schoolteachers, students, heads of refugee camps, patients and nurses." When a New York City official visits Ireland or Italy, it historically has been viewed as spreading goodwill for New York and thus, serving the city. But it's doubtful those trips involved meetings with leaders of terrorist organizations. Charles Barron's trip to Gaza, along with two of his staff members, was paid by Viva Palestina, a group launched by British Member of Parliament George Galloway who has twice led convoys to Gaza that culminated in meetings with, and delivery of more than $2 million in the form of cash and supplies directly to Hamas officials. The cost of each person's travel was estimated at $2,400. The United States has designated Hamas a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and outlawed providing support to it. Last November, a federal jury in Dallas convicted five former officials of the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development of violating that and other laws like it. Barron came to lead the convoy, which left the United States in July, after Galloway passed him the baton upon reaching Gaza, as noted in an account provided by convoy participant Hector Carreon. According to Carreon's report, Galloway called Barron "one of the most important new and rising voices in the Democratic Party of Barack Obama, the City Councilman of New York City to whom I now hand over formally the leadership the American Viva Palestina convoy, Councilman Charles Barron." Upon their arrival in Gaza, both Galloway and Barron knelt down in a Muslim prayer position. Barron did not respond to calls seeking comment. The Investigative Project on Terrorism has been unable to obtain the letter Barron sent to the COIB detailing what he expected to happen on the trip. However, the response obtained from a COIB attorney includes a summary of Barron's representations – making no mention of meetings with Hamas officials. And why? Because the Feds placed a spy in the Islamic Center of Irvine, California, to gather information about a brother-in-law of Osama bin Laden’s bodyguard, Ahmadullah Niazi. That spy, according to the Associated Press, “recorded Niazi on multiple occasions talking about blowing up buildings, acquiring weapons and sending money to the Afghan mujahadeen.” So what could be the problem? If CAIR is really the moderate organization that it claims to be, abhorring terrorism, rejecting any attempt to use Islamic teaching to incite to violence, and proudly embracing American values and the American system, shouldn’t it be applauding the FBI’s bold and daring initiative in apprehending Niazi?  Canada's Globe and Mail has a fascinating account of a home-grown terrorist who dreamed of waging massive attacks on Canadian military and industrial targets but settled for tossing Molotov cocktails at a Montreal-area Jewish school and placing a small propane bomb outside a Jewish center.
Omar Bulphred and an accomplice admit the attacks on the Jewish targets in respective guilty pleas. Bulphred was given a 7-year prison sentence Thursday. Police had been watching him for a while, after some of their sloppy ventures left a trail of clues behind, but Bulphred was able to attack the school despite being under frequent surveillance. An undercover officer posing as an anti-capitalist activist befriended the accomplice.
Police were on Bulphred's trail already, reporter Tu Thanh Ha's story details. Bulphred is described as "a small-time hoodlum with a big chip on his shoulders." He researched targets and bomb-making on the Internet. After at least two small attacks, the story details, notes were left at the scene urging conversion to Islam and "demanding the release of 17 Muslim terror suspects arrested earlier that year in Toronto."
His motivations are unclear. After being jailed in 2004, police found a note in his jail cell ranting against Jews and Americans.
Before his most recent arrest, they also heard the men discuss kidnapping and killing a random gay man.
Police arrested Bulphred and his accomplice after they scouted and shot videotape of an army base near his apartment. At home later, Bulphred was heard on a police bug saying "Take your knife and cut the throat of each Christian around you. No pity."
Police arrested the men two days later. As an officer explained: "It was getting too dangerous, considering the last conversation. We couldn't afford to wait." Source: IPT Blog

For years, some organizations have taken an extreme approach, telling the detainees' stories in the most favorable manner possible -- ignoring evidence of their ties to terrorism, while magnifying nearly every allegation of abuse whether it is valid or not. The result is a picture of Guantánamo that is clearly distorted. Most inmates are portrayed as obvious innocents who are tortured by an American government run amok. Consider a pamphlet published in mid-December of last year by Amnesty International. In a four-page piece titled "Solidarity with Guantánamo Detainees," Amnesty asks people to "support the detainees" and implores them to "act now" in their defense. The pamphlet references nine current and former detainees, highlighting their words from "poems and letters," and asking people to write them in order to boost their morale: "Please write to any or all of the following Guantánamo detainees, expressing in your own words your solidarity with them." What are the detainees' alleged ties to terrorism? What is the evidence that has been collected against them? Amnesty International does not say.  Let's have quick look at a radical Islamic terrorist and see what we come up with. The immediate problem is that much of our understanding of terrorism is derived from the official statements of the leaders who play up ideological and spiritual claims. It is rare for our ways of thinking about terrorists to be informed by direct contact with them. Where we can see them for what they actually are. They are often people with a poor understanding of what they are trying to achieve or the real consequences of their actions other than a general ideology. However, in spite of this a few basic characteristics can be inferred from their actions and this will lay a good groundwork for a better understanding of their basic beliefs. First of all they are all misogynists as witnessed by their attitude towards, and treatment of, women. They are also anti-Western, or more appropriately, traditionalists or anti-modern. They have a wish to retain or return to simpler times where things were black and white and their beliefs were not to be questioned. They are also extremely ego-centric in that they do not have the mental ability to understand that other people may have different opinions and beliefs from themselves. In other words; "It's my way, or the highway!"But, more than anything, the Islamic terrorist has an extreme inferiority complex with regards to the West, that is masked by grandiose plans and ambitions. I'm not sure what the medical term for this is but as I described in my book "The Plain Truth About God!" The decline of Islam has led down a road to where the modern Arab, for the most part, wonders how his faith and culture fits in with a rapidly changing world.
This is a far cry from originally belonging to one of the greatest cultures in the history of human kind.
One of the main problems with the Arab-Muslim religion of the Middle East today stems from outright religious intolerance combined with an insular culture that is still stuck in the tribal twelfth century!
It is a curious situation where on the one hand the average Arab confesses to overwhelming piety and subservience to Allah; while at the same time he looks with arrogance down on everyone else as being “infidels” and inferior.
This, combined with the rage average Arabs have against perceptions of them in the West as being nothing more than camel herders living somewhere in the middle ages, makes for a truly schizophrenic outlook on their part.
Just as Christianity was stuck in the Middle Ages for a long time, so the religion of Muhammad has, among certain groups, been stuck in the past.
It needs to be dragged into the modern age, kicking and screaming if need be!
One of the best examples of this can be seen in the recent practices of the Taliban in central Afghanistan.
They held a whole nation hostage to their religious zealousness and it took the intervention of outside forces to finally remove them.
Gone is a centuries old way of life as their governments and population are thrust unto the world stage.
Their religion and lifestyle has been given a millennium long drop kick from the eleventh to the twenty-first century.
The cultural shock alone has seriously disrupted the social order and fabric of their society.
Nevertheless, I would like to point out that Muslims themselves bear the most responsibility for the situation they are in right now.
When we look at the tensions between East and West in the light of day, religion is a handy way to rile the population against the “infidels” of the West.
The Imam's know this and it is a fear of Western ideals and culture, combined with jealousy of Western affluence that drives them into such fits of rage.
The Western influence is a direct threat to their authority, especially amongst the young!
Don’t forget that no matter what form of government a Middle East country has, outside of some large urban areas it is still largely controlled by the tribes and Imams!
By the end of the 1970’s America, Europe and various Arab regimes extended too many fundamentalist and extremist groups military, diplomatic, financial and logistical support for two main reasons.
The first was to deflect the attention of Muslims around the world from the anti-American, Iranian understanding of Islam that was being fostered by the clerics under the Ayatollah Khomeini.
The second was of course to reduce American casualties in trying to counter the U.S.S.R. incursions into Afghanistan.
Sponsored by petrodollars, all aggressive interpretations of Islam were published and abundantly distributed in the Muslim world.
This was accompanied by a vigorous publicity campaign assuring Muslims that this was the only right path and correct understanding of Islam.
Other interpretations quickly disappeared amongst the uneducated masses.
Religious and cultural tolerance was slowly eroded while fundamentalism was on the ascent.
However, literature and propaganda didn’t work alone amongst the frustrated Arab citizens living under totalitarian regimes for the better part of a century.
The extreme interpretations of Islam that were circulating provided them with a fascinating religion based Utopia.
A dream that the Imams were only too glad to foster and spread.
The truth of the matter is that Islam now enjoys the same sort of power over the masses as Christianity displayed a thousand years ago.
Why should the power structure of Islam give up any of their perks? It does not matter whether it is Al-Qaida, the Taliban, the clergy running Iran or the militants in Egypt and half a dozen other countries.
They all want to turn their little piece of Eden into an Islamic state.
In other words, a state that is run according to their own ideals, beliefs and benefit; and to hell with everyone else!  By Supna Zaidi 24-year-old Derrick Shareef was sentenced yesterday to 35 years in prison for planning a terrorist attack on a Chicago mall using hand grenades two years ago. At sentencing, Shareef declared that he no longer believes in violent jihad and has "adopted more positive Muslim beliefs." What these positive beliefs are should be a central concern to the Metropolitan Correctional Center since his attorney cited his rise as the Imam of the Muslim population while interred there. In 2005, then FBI Director Robert Mueller stated, "Prisons continue to be fertile ground for extremists who exploit both a prisoner's conversion to Islam while still in prison, as well as their socio-economic status and placement in the community upon their release." As an Imam, Shareef is technically taking on the role of a Chaplain, though it does not seem likely that he applied for such a position given its requirements, including but not limited to a Master of Divinity degree or its equivalent and at least two years of "autonomous experience ... in a parish or specialized ministry setting." Shareef was arrested at 22. Indoctrination by Islamists in prisons is a real threat to democracy and remains a prime example of lawful jihad in America. If he found a home belonging to followers of Jesus, he would sometimes throw a grenade inside and shoot it up with bursts of machine-gun fire. He has no idea how many people were killed and wounded in such attacks. Today a non-uniformed Saada, now known as Tass, patrols the dangerous Hamas-dominated streets of the Gaza Strip – no longer hunting down Christians or bearing arms; the Palestinian-American has traded in his automatic weapons and grenades for the Bible, humanitarian service and apologies to Arab Christians he once persecuted. It was a day of national mourning with memorial services, moments of silence and special events for the victims’ families as every New Yorker and folks all across the country touched by that fateful day shared recollections, stories and tears. That morning, I shared an emotional moment with a co-worker who had just come from an early morning church memorial service where the names of the local victims were solemnly commemorated. One of the victims of the tragedy was a dear friend, FDNY Firefighter Michael Elferis, a fallen hero who rushed into the burning buildings to save the lives of trapped victims. My co-worker’s husband, who worked for Con Edison, spent three weeks as a first responder at Ground Zero fit testing respirators. About the case, a press release issued on April 17, 2006, the DOJ stated: "...Former University of South Florida professor Sami Al-Arian has pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiring to provide services to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad [PIJ], a specially designated terrorist organization, in violation of U.S. law, the Department of Justice announced today...Al-Arian pleaded guilty to Count Four of the indictment against him - a charge of conspiracy to make or receive contributions of funds, goods or services to or for the benefit of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad...Al-Arian's agreement with the government calls for a recommended prison sentence of 46 to 57 months in prison, based on a five-year maximum statutory sentence. Al-Arian, 48, who has been in custody since his arrest on Feb. 20, 2003, has agreed to stipulate to deportation to another country by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement once his prison sentence has ended..." Al-Arian was under detention by immigration authorities, facing a charge of contempt because of his refusal to testify in a federal grand jury investigation involving the infamous "Virginia jihad network." Activist, judge Leonie Brinkema, a 1993 Clinton appointee [who notoriously chastised federal prosecutors, taking the death penalty off the table in the case of Zacarias Moussaoui - the so-called "20th hijacker" - who is now serving a life term] started the process that led to the release of Al-Arian.  KANSAS CITY -- A date in 2009 has been set for former Southwest Michigan Congressman Mark Siljander to stand trial on charges in connection with an alleged international terrorism ring.
U.S. District Judge Nanette Laughrey, of the Western District of Missouri, signed an order last month setting a trial date of Nov. 2, 2009, for Siljander and other defendants in the case involving the Islamic American Relief Agency.
Siljander was indicated in January on charges of money laundering, conspiracy and obstruction of justice. The government alleges the agency used stolen money to pay Siljander for lobbying efforts and that Siljander lied to federal investigators.
Prosecutors say the organization aided a terrorist with ties to al-Qaeda and the Taliban.
Siljander has pleaded not guilty. His lawyer has said Siljander "vehemently denies" the charges.
Siljander, 57, formerly of St. Joseph County, represented portions of Southwest Michigan in the old 4th Congressional District from 1981-87. He now lives in Great Falls, Va. Source: Kalamazoo Gazette

Forty years ago, Mahmoud Mohammad Issa Mohammad, a former teacher, joined the terrorist group the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. On Dec. 26, 1968, Mohammad and another gunman launched an attack on an El Al airliner at Athens International Airport. The two ran up on the tarmac firing guns and, throwing grenades at the passenger jet, wounded a flight attendant as she opened an emergency exit and killed a 50-year-old passenger, Leon Shirdan. The gunmen were captured, tried and convicted in Greek court, and they were sentenced in 1970 to serve 17 years in prison.
