I got a really interesting comment to my post at Classical Values: A Libertine Speaks. Even though I spent many years active in the Church, preaching and having a music ministry, once I got old enough to realize I didn't have all the answers, I didn't want any church elders having influence in law. Law should only be about not directly harming others, and nothing else.
The problem with imposing values is that when someone says "God told me this is the right thing to do" you can't argue with it. They've invoked the ultimate authority and don't think they have to even listen to opposing viewpoints. Calvin, who is STILL considered an authority, had people murdered for disagreeing with him. Almost every Christian church old enough has blood on its hands.
I've been active in quite enough churches to see first hand the jealousy and conflicting values. My music was more modern, and some Christians said "I feel the Spirit" and others said "I feel Satan in this why did you do this". They weren't both right, but both think they know God enough to use the Law to force people to live according to their own set of values.
Paul even told the early church in Corinthians to stop arguing over less important matters.
Jesus spent his whole time WITH the "sinners", not lecturing them or judging them.
We've already seen what the world looks like when the Church runs it, no one wants to go back to that.
plutosdad · October 29, 2009 03:05 PM I have nothing to add. Well actually I do have something to add. Eric at Classical Values documents some people who do want to go back to a time when the church ran the world as it still does in some places.
Free speech death watch. The U.N. Human Rights Council approved the resolution, cosponsored by the U.S. and Egypt, yesterday. It calls on states to condemn and criminalize "any advocacy of national, racial or religious hatred that constitutes incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence." It also condemns "negative stereotyping of religions and racial groups," which is of course an oblique reference to accurate reporting about the jihad doctrine and Islamic supremacism -- which is always the focus of whining by the Organization of the Islamic Conference and other groups about negative "stereotyping" of Islam. They never say anything when people like Osama bin Laden and Khaled Sheikh Mohammed issue detailed Koranic expositions justifying violence and hatred; but when people like Geert Wilders and others report about such expositions, that's "negative stereotyping." By Tawfik Hamid The proposal of the U.S. administration to reach out to “moderate” Taliban to end the Afghan insurgency needs reconsideration. The concept that we can live with “moderate” elements of this regimen based on the view that many of them “only” want to implement Shariah laws and that “most” of them do not promote global jihad carry many risks for the world’s security. The first risk is that accepting to live with “moderate” Taliban – because they do NOT believe in global jihad — will set a model for many Islamists to use the same barbaric approaches — that the Taliban used before and is still using until now – to implement Shariah rules everywhere. If I was until now a jihadist (as I used to be 25 years ago) reading about such an approach of the U.S. administration, I would immediately start putting a plan with my fellow jihadists to behead children in the U.S., burn young girls alive, and demand from the U.S. government to live under the rules of Shariah in order to stop our attacks. In other words, to end the freedom of women in U.S., prevent young American girls from getting education, and to practice stoning for those who have sex outside of marriage. Recently, the Pakistani government agreed to live with “moderate” Taliban and allowed them to control Swat, or the “Switzerland of Pakistan,” but this agreement has not prevented terrorist attacks in Pakistan such as the recent attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team and many others. By Pamela Geller The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) put on a hatefest during its annual convention in Washington over the Fourth of July weekend. The popular American Muslim speaker Hamza Yusuf of California’s Zaytuna Institute illustrated this when he declared July 4th a Muslim Day -- because on that day, Muslims defeated the crusaders. One featured speaker was the Imam Warith Deen Umar, the former head of New York prisons’ Muslim chaplain program. He spoke about his books, Jews for Salaam: The Straight Path to Global Peace, and Judaiology. Umar repeatedly described Jewish conspiracies to control the world, saying: “You need to know that Obama, the first man that Obama picked when we were so happy that he was the President, he picked an Israeli -- Rahm Emanuel -- his number one man. His number two man -- [David] Axelrod -- another Israeli person. Why do this small number of people have control of the world…There’s some people in the world says no Holocaust even happened. Some of their leaders say no Holocaust even happened. Well it did happen. These people were punished. They were punished for a reason because they were serially disobedient to Allah.” Read more ...Source: Human Events
To: U.S. Government and United Nations
We call upon America's government representatives and the international representatives of the United Nations to recognize the global threat of oppression and violence to women from Islamic supremacism. We demand that they pass national and international resolutions condemning Islamic supremacism as a threat to women everywhere. We demand that these world leaders recognize the existence of Islamic supremacism, and we demand that they take measures to protect the women of the world from the Islamic supremacist ideology. Women are being oppressed, beaten, murdered in America and around the world in the name of Islamic supremacism. Being "sorry" is not enough. We call upon the leaders of the world to take responsibility to SAVE WOMEN NOW from this cruel, vicious, and deadly ideology of Islamic supremacism.
Sincerely,
The Undersigned

Further details are available on connections between the U.S. Muslim Brotherhood, the U.S. government, and an Islamic cable TV station whose founder has been charged in the beheading of his wife. As reported yesterday by the New York Times: A man who founded a Muslim-American television station to help fight Muslim stereotypes is to appear on Wednesday in a suburban Buffalo court on charges that he decapitated his wife last week. The man, Muzzammil Hassan, 44, went to a police station in Orchard Park, N.Y., on Thursday to report that his wife, Aasiya Zubair Hassan, was dead, Chief Andrew Benz said on Tuesday. Mr. Hassan told the police that her body could be found in the nearby office of the television station, Bridges TV. The police later arrested him on charges of second-degree murder, Chief Benz said. According to investigative research posted on GMBDR, in April 2004 national media reported on the start-up of Bridges TV, described as "the first English-language cable television channel aimed at U.S. and Canadian Muslims." By Supna Zaidi On November 6, 2008, the U.S. Treasury Department hosted a seminar on Islamic banking to train government employees on Sharia-compliant finance (SCF). According to a press release, it was “designed to help inform the policy community about Islamic financial services, which are an increasingly important part of the global financial industry.” It is interesting to note that while many in the West deride parallel societies, the lack of integration, and overall “foreign-ness” of its Muslim populations, they have no problem embracing Islamic banking. Maybe because this is the one area of religious “encroachment” that allows the West to make money, and lots of it. Both nations have reportedly "signed three new military contracts worth $63 million" in U.S. grants to the Lebanese Army for "secure communications, ammunition and infantry weapons:" Military aid which will ultimately end up in the hands of Hezbollah, according to Middle East terrorism expert Dr. Walid Phares.
