ADVOCATES FOR CIVIL LIBERTIES HOLDS HISTORIC CONFERENCE IN TORONTO BY: FERN SIDMAN On Wednesday February 16th, a most unique and historic colloquium was convened in Toronto by the Advocates For Civil Liberties (ACL), a new and dynamic organization of attorneys, professionals and concerned citizens dedicated to spotlighting the egregious manifestations of anti-Israel propaganda on university campuses across North America. The day long symposium that drew over 400 people was entitled, "When Middle East Politics Invade Campus" and was held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Toronto. The forum featured a panoply of distinguished speakers including such vibrant and erudite intellectual personalities as Israel National News op-ed contributor, Dr. Phyllis Chesler, emerita professor of psychology and women's studies at CUNY, journalist, noted lecturer and author of 13 books including, "The New Anti-Semitism" and "The Death of Feminism". The other speakers included Dr. Catherine Chatterley, a research fellow at the University of Manitoba and founding director of the Canadian Institute for the Study of Anti-Semitism, Judge Hadassa Ben Ito, an international jurist and past president of the International Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists, Dr. Gil Troy, professor of history at McGill University, renowned author and presidential historian, Elliot Chodoff, a Major in the Israel Defense Forces and a political and military analyst specializing in the Middle East conflict and the global war on terrorism, Dr. Richard Cravatts of Boston University and author of a forthcoming book entitled, "Genocidal Liberalism: The University's Jihad Against Israel", Andrew Roberts, founding member of the Friends of Israel Initiative and a noted British historian, author and lecturer, and Salim Mansur, professor of political science at the University of Western Ontario. Spearheaded and organized by conference coordinator Meryle Kates, the ACL has been established to advocate for civil liberties protection in Canada, particularly in university settings. Their efforts have been devoted to countering unbalanced anti-Israel messages from organizations whose objectives are to promote propaganda against the State of Israel, with the result of inciting anti-Israel sentiment and hostilities. The directors of the ACL include Lorne Saltman, an attorney with the firm Cassels Brock & Blackwell, LLP, Stephen Posen of Minden Gross, LLP, and Robert Grant of FusionPro UK. According to their mission statement, "the ACL seeks to collaborate with academic officials to devise appropriate, enforceable ground rules for campus political activities. Increasingly, demonstrations such as, but not limited to the upcoming "Israeli Apartheid Week" on campus, create a hostile atmosphere, and one that stifles the genuine exchange of views on sensitive Middle East issues. Groups promoting Israeli Apartheid Week attack the very concept of dialogue and freedom of speech. Rather than engage in civil discourse, these groups become involved in hateful protests to delegitimize Israel's standing internationally, and create a climate of intimidation for many members of the university community." Serving as moderator for the proceedings was Jonathan Kay, a managing editor at Canada's National Post newspaper and a columnist on the newspaper's op-ed page. "The only way to disprove a lie is to establish the facts," declared Judge Hadassa Ben Itto as she delivered the opening remarks of the conference via video feed from Jerusalem. Judge Itto is best known for her scholarly monograph entitled, "The Lie That Wouldn't Die, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" (2005), a text that has been used for a century to demonize Jews and delegitimize Israel. "In 1964, the Protocols were finally declared 'the hoax of the century, yet both the Jewish people and Israel are now targets of haters who still insist that there is a Jewish conspiracy to dominate the world", she ruefully observed. Referencing the tendentious climate on campuses as it pertains to Israel and the spurious "scholarship" that is being substituted for facts, Judge Itto said, "The organizers of Israeli Apartheid Week prove that they know nothing about Israel. Professors at some universities are guilty of presenting distorted information about Israel along with one-sided bias and slanderous rhetoric. Boycotts of academics and the assault on the free marketplace of ideas are replicas of the public square where public opinion is dictating policy today." Adding that she personally witnessed "real apartheid" in South Africa years ago, she condemned the concept of an Israeli Apartheid Week as "outrageous" and called for responsible educators to set the record straight. Students at such respected academic institutions as York University in Toronto are no stranger to the acrimony that is engendered during Israeli Apartheid Week as their campus has previously morphed into a hotbed of anti-Israel and anti-Jewish hatred during past events of this kind. In a very special panel dedicated to the voices of those who have experienced this phenomenon, Mr. Kay introduced five York students who articulated their views and expressed concerns about the future. Sara Akrami, an Iranian human rights activist and second year political science student at York said, "Clubs are established at York with the sole purpose of creating discord and promoting anti-Israel violence and the administration takes no action against them." Ms. Akrami noted that the November 2010 appearance of British parliamentarian George Galloway was opposed by a majority of the students at York. Galloway is a highly polemical figure who achieved notoriety as a rabid hater of the Jewish state, asserting that Israel created "conditions in the Arab countries and in some European countries to stampede Jewish people ... into the Zionist state." She decried the "inhumane and terrorist activities of the Islamic Republic of Iran" and added that those on campus who support the draconian regime of Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad have "treated her organization with hostility and disrespect". She angrily admonished Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and called upon him to "stop dealing with the Iranian government." Others such as Josee Chiasson, a fourth year student at York completing an honors BA in psychology has undertaken the task of uniting Christian and Jewish leaders on campus and has assumed the role of president of Christians United for Israel (CUFI). "I knew nothing of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict during my first year at college. It was only when I visited Israel and witnessed the truth firsthand, did I begin to understand that the insidious rhetoric of the organizers of Israeli Apartheid Week simply did not hold true." Declaring that the pernicious canards against Jews extolled by Hitler were tantamount to those spewed forth by George Galloway, Ms. Chiasson said, "Hitler promised world peace if only the Jews were eradicated and so did Galloway. He said that if Israel makes peace with the Palestinians then there would be world peace and we know that that is a complete falsehood." She exhorted students and faculty alike to, "challenge the radical beliefs that are rampant on our campuses" as she spoke of "students who have been targeted for abuse and threats" by vehemently anti-Israel organizations on campus. Other students such as Michael Payton, a cognitive science major at York, sociology major Afroza Mohammed and Noah Kochman also addressed the issue of students being subjected to verbal invective and physical assaults by members of the Muslim Student Association and other anti-Israel groups. Mr. Kochman, a member of the Canadian Association of Jewish Students spoke of the violent outbursts of Palestinian student groups that led to the cancellation of an address scheduled to be delivered by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ay Concordia University in Montreal in 2002. "Pro-Israel student demonstrators were trapped in their own space, unable to move, because of the overt aggression of the demonstrators who resorted to violence." Subsequent to the student panel forum, Andrew Roberts, noted British author, historian, lecturer and founding member of the Friends of Israel Initiative took center stage and spoke of the aims of the relatively new organization. Established in August of 2010 to concretely challenge the British boycott of Israeli academia, Mr. Roberts said that among the goals of the Friends of Israel Initiative were to, "counter the growing efforts to delegitimize the State of Israel and its right to live in peace within safe and defensible borders. The Initiative arises out of a sense of deep concern about the unprecedented campaign of delegitimization against Israel waged by enemies of the Jewish state, and perversely, supported by numerous international institutions." Among the founding members of the Friends of Israeli Initiative is John Bolton, former US ambassador to the United Nations. Professor Richard Cravatts of Boston University and author of a forthcoming book entitled, "Genocidal Liberalism: The University's Jihad Against Israel", which documents the extensive web of Islamist influence that pervades the university campus, spoke of "brand hijacking" in terms of Israel's global image. "Those who would re-write the history of Israel and the narrative of the Palestinians in the Middle East have hijacked Israel's branding", he intoned adding that we live in a "world turned upside down in its relationship to the interpretation of the reality in the Middle East." Dr. Cravatts illustrated his assertions by pointing out the sheer hypocrisy of the worldview shared by the international community as it pertains to standards of equity and justice in Israel. "We ignore the fact that Arabs in the territories would receive the death penalty for selling an apartment to a Jew, but we never raise our voices when Israel is roundly condemned for building 1300 apartments in East Jerusalem; a right that any other nation takes for granted." Warning of the existential threat that Israel faces from the burgeoning Muslim Brotherhood, Eliot Chodoff, a political and military analyst and lecturer on the history and challenges of the Middle East said, "There is an all out assault on Israel taking place" and reminded his audience of the parallel between the recent revolution in Egypt and the Iranian revolution that took place in 1979. "It was students, intellectuals and shopkeepers that led the revolution against the Shah of Iran," he intoned, adding that the teachings of the Muslim Brotherhood were predicated upon a Nazi-like ideology and it is precisely these beliefs that provide their basis for launching a global jihad. "The campuses have become increasingly and aggressively anti-Israel and pro-Islam", declared Dr. Phyllis Chesler, prolific author, emerita professor of psychology and women's studies at CUNY and a foremost expert on gender and religious apartheid in the Muslim world. "Pro-Israel students are verbally humiliated and physically attacked. Professors in Middle East Studies teach students only one point of view -- the pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel point of view", she said, adding that, "this has been the case at York University, Concordia University and the University of California at San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Berkeley and Irvine." Speaking at length on the history of the progenitors of genuine apartheid in the Middle East, Dr. Chesler said, "Israel is not an apartheid nation. Islam is the world's largest practitioner of both religious and gender apartheid. Muslims have persecuted, murdered, and forcibly converted the entire Middle East, India, parts of Africa, Asia and now Europe." Dr. Chesler outlined her important work on the phenomenon of "honor killings" of Muslim women throughout the world that was published in 2009 and 2010 in the Middle East Quarterly. "Islamic gender apartheid is a human rights violation and cannot be justified in the name of cultural relativism, tolerance, anti-racism, diversity or political correctness", she said. "We are facing two jihads", said Dr. Gil Troy, professor of history at McGill University in Montreal and author of the book, "Why I am A Zionist." "As we've discussed today, there is the jihad on campus and a jihad in the classroom, in our textbooks and emanating from our professors", he said. Exhorting students and parents to become more involved in the sphere of academia, Professor Troy said, "we are living in a golden age for Jews on campus, but we must raise the standards of teaching and rescue academia from corrupt academics and fight educational malpractice." Attacking the pervasive trend of multiculturalism, Salim Mansur, professor of political science at the University of Western Ontario said, "The right of Israel to remain a safe and secure state must be defended against the ideology of multiculturalists", adding that "multiculturalism is a big, odious, disgusting lie. China, Japan and the Arab nations are not practicing multiculturalism so why are we?" Dr. Catherine Chatterley of the Canadian Institute for the Study of Anti-Semitism spoke of the historical basis of Israeli Apartheid Week saying, "The ideology behind Israeli Apartheid Week is not a new one. The former Soviet Union was a leading proponent of this anti-Zionist philosophy. This was the ideology that declared that Zionism is tantamount to imperialism, racism, discrimination and organically linked to the repression of the human being." She also addressed the broader global machinations of those orchestrating Israeli Apartheid Week. "The concept of Israeli Apartheid Week is part of a global, political strategy to dismantle the Jewish state. It began as a Canadian invention and now takes place in over 55 cities worldwide." She added that the organizers of Israeli Apartheid Week are making concerted efforts to build alliances with the disenfranchised in general, thus furthering their anti-Zionist distortions.
 Actually -- surprise! -- the local Muslims are angry about the FBI's use of informants. Apparently no one is allowed to know what is going on inside the mosques, and we are all supposed to take it on trust that inside them they are preaching love for non-Muslims, peaceful coexistence with them as equals on an indefinite basis, equality of rights for women, the importance of the Constitution's non-establishment of a state religion, and the virtues of a non-Sharia state. "Deadly FBI raid in Dearborn prompts concern over informants: Muslims, civil rights advocates decry tactic," by Niraj Warikoo for the Detroit Free Press, January 17: He called himself Jabril. Two years ago, a white man who claimed he was an ex-con and convert to Islam started attending a predominantly African-American mosque on a run-down street in Detroit. He touted his Islamic ways while offering poor members of the mosque cash for odd jobs at an auto shop on the city's west side. He told tales of sick family members and brought a young boy to the mosque who he said was his son. Jabril soon became a brother in faith and a confidante of the mosque's fiery leader, Luqman Ameen Abdullah, who was killed in a shootout during an Oct. 28 raid by FBI agents to arrest men suspected of dealing in stolen goods. Members now believe Jabril was an FBI informant who infiltrated their mosque. "He built up trust in the community," said Omar Regan, 34, one of Abdullah's sons. The case -- one of several in the past year involving informants in Muslim-American communities -- has prompted growing concern among Muslims and civil rights advocates about undercover surveillance in religious institutions. Federal officials say they don't send informants into congregations without reason. But last week, U.S. Rep. John Conyers, a Detroit Democrat, called upon the U.S. Justice Department to review its policies on using informants in houses of worship. [...] For two years, the man known as Jabril to many at Masjid Al-Haqq ingratiated himself with members of the mosque, according to Abdullah's followers. They accepted him as a brother in Islam. On Oct. 28, Regan said Jabril asked mosque members to help him move some goods in a Dearborn warehouse. Authorities said the men were there to deal in stolen items. Once inside the warehouse, Jabril reportedly told the mosque members: "I'm going to go get some water, a drink of water," Regan said in an interview with the Free Press. Jabril then disappeared. Moments later, federal agents stormed inside. Abdullah, 53, was shot dead by FBI agents after an exchange of fire during the raid. Jabril was never seen again by members of the mosque. The story of Jabril's alleged infiltration offers a rare look into the use of FBI informants in Muslim-American communities in the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001. Members of the Detroit mosque say they believe Jabril was a key undercover informant in helping the FBI build a case against Abdullah and his followers. Muslim advocates say there's a growing problem of improper use of informants, particularly in houses of worship. Some accuse the informant of luring Abdullah to his death in the fatal shooting, which has raised questions about excessive force. But the FBI and federal prosecutors have said that agents acted appropriately in trying to apprehend members of a criminal operation led by Abdullah. They said the group preached violence and hatred against law enforcement and non-Muslims. Abdullah and his followers were not charged with any acts of terrorism. The charges against the 11 men arrested include dealing in stolen goods such as laptops and fur coats, firearms violations and tampering with vehicle identification numbers. The criminal complaint, however, highlights the radical views of the group. "America must fall," Abdullah once said, according to the complaint. While some Muslim leaders have expressed concern about civil rights, federal officials say informants are vitally needed, especially with the recent surge in domestic terrorism.... Read it all.  Two civil lawsuits filed by Muslims alleging criminal fraud were served today against the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a self-described Muslim civil-rights group that has been named an unindicted terrorist co-conspirator by the Justice Department. The cases filed in federal court in the nation's capital assert the D.C.-based CAIR was aware that its "resident attorney" and "manager for civil rights" at its now-defunct Maryland-Virginia chapter, Morris Days, was not an attorney and failed to provide legal services for Muslims who came to CAIR for help. The complaint alleges CAIR purposefully conspired with Days to keep the clients from discovering that their legal matters were being mishandled or not handled at all, according to attorney David Yerushalmi, who is representing the five plaintiffs, three of whom are Muslims. "CAIR has engaged in a massive criminal fraud in which literally hundreds of CAIR clients have been victimized, and because of the CAIR cover-up, they still don't realize it," Yerushalmi said. "The fact that CAIR has victimized Muslims and non-Muslims alike demonstrates that CAIR is only looking out for CAIR and its ongoing effort to bilk donors out of millions of dollars of charitable donations thinking they are supporting a legitimate organization." Meanwhile, CAIR is engaged in a lawsuit it filed against a father and son who carried out a six-month undercover investigation of the Muslim group's terrorist ties. CAIR is suing P. David Gaubatz and his son, Chris Gaubatz, who posed as a Muslim in an internship with CAIR's national office in Washington.
During that period, the younger Gaubatz made audio and video recordings and took some 12,000 pages of documents destined for a shredder in an attempt, he said, to expose the group's ties to Islamic jihad and terrorism. Key evidence has been published in the book "Muslim Mafia," published by WND Books. His father is a former Air Force special agent with extensive Middle East experience who researches the spread of radical Islam in the U.S. and its threat to national security. The two new lawsuits follow a previous suit centered on Days that alleged CAIR's fraudulent conduct amounted to racketeering, under federal RICO statutes. A court dismissed the RICO counts, concluding CAIR's conduct as alleged was fraudulent but not a technical violation of RICO. The plaintiffs in that case have appealed and are awaiting the circuit court's briefing schedule, Yerushalmi said. The two new federal civil complaints were filed Jan. 6 in the federal district court for the District of Columbia. The complaints say that according to CAIR internal documents, there were hundreds of victims of the fraud scheme. The suits contend CAIR knew or should have known Days was not a lawyer when it hired him. Further, when CAIR officials were confronted with evidence of Days' fraudulent conduct, the complaints say, they conspired to conceal the fraud. CAIR, the complaints assert, suggested Days was never actually employed by CAIR and concealed the fact CAIR had fired him once some of the victims began threatening to sue. More at WND
 For almost a decade, American Muslims have seen a growing debate in their communities about the radicalization of Muslims in America and how to combat it. Since its inception in 2003, the American Islamic Forum for Democracy (AIFD) has been one of the lone voices publicly waging a contest of ideas with Islamist organizations in the U.S. The crux of our mission is that the ideology of political Islam (Islamism) is the root cause of extremism that threatens Americans' security as well as the faith of American Muslims.
Most major American-Muslim organizations hatched from the Muslim Brotherhood are advocates of political Islam and will always refuse to acknowledge the need to separate mosque and state. The recent Christmas Day airliner attack, the earlier December arrests of American Muslims in Pakistan, and the Fort Hood massacre moved that debate into a new phase. The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) and the Muslim American Society (MAS) have begun to acknowledge for the first time that Muslim communities are facing a "radicalization" problem. These organizations recently announced they are pursuing "anti-radicalization" programs. This is certainly an important change in their rhetoric, but sadly, window-dressing. These Islamist groups have simply recognized that their post-9/11 apologetic messaging is not resonating with the general public. To solve the problem, they co-opted the rhetoric of curbing radicalization. But absent real, honest reform against political Islam, their rhetoric is vacuous. The question that begs to be asked of any Muslim group touting these programs is: What will be the structure and substance of your campaign, and will you confront, renounce and reform the ideology of political Islam? CAIR and MPAC have typically renounced the use of terror and violence, but they have never taken a position against the ideology of political Islam. They have also been constant antagonists to efforts by law enforcement to understand and mitigate the real stages of radicalization of Muslims in America. Just recently these groups called for government to naively "decouple religion from terror." If the root cause of Muslim radicalization is Islamism, what good is any counterterrorism effort that decouples religion from terror?
How can law enforcement effectively counter terrorism in our country without recognizing the slippery slope of political Islam and its separatist narrative is the core ideology that drives the mindset of the extremists as they radicalize? Pragmatically, and I say this with tough love for my co-religionists, many American Muslims need a 12-step program to recognize the driving separatism of political Islam. So many American Muslims have gone down that slippery slope of political Islam to radicalization that the connection cannot be denied. Until the majority of American Muslims can reform their theo-political ideas against the growing global power of the Islamist movement, home-grown terror will only increase as it has. There must be a public war of ideas within the Islamic consciousness promoting liberty over Islamism, freedom over theocracy and secular law over Sharia law. M. Zudhi Jasser
 I got a lot of mail today about a previous article describing a teenage Muslim girl who claimed to have converted to Christianity, and was now in fear of her life since she suspected her family might do her "in" with an "honor killing!" "Not so!" said her father, a middle class jeweler from New Jersey. After Rifqa proselytized with a Bible at school, Mohamed Bary said, the family asked her to stop because it wasn’t an appropriate activity in school. They also told her she had an obligation to study her original faith first, before choosing another. But Mohamed Bary says they never threatened to kill or harm the girl. “She is still my daughter,” he said. Now the question posed was whether she was just a troubled teen, or a potential victim of a barbaric and medieval practise of honor killing? My exact words were; "I think the Department of Children and Families might want to err on the side of caution on this one!" For this I got all sorts of mail from Muslims and Islamic institutions telling me that "honor killing" is more of a "cultural tradition" than a religious one. Even though this is true, the sad fact of the matter is that this suspicion, and the stereotype of Arabs /Muslims as bloodthirsty, ignorant throwbacks to a more violent time has been re-enforced by their actions and attitudes. Let me give a plain and direct message to all Muslims in the world today! You got one hell of a P.R. problem folks! Until you howl with rage and condemnation over every last act of barbarism by these "fundamentalists," "terrorists," "fanatics" and "misogynists" running around giving your religion a bad name, the world is going to paint you with the same brush as them! Only utter outrage at the terrible depiction of your faith by these ignorant, superstitious assholes will ever get the general population to accept you for what you really are, and not some demented and deranged savage.  By Diane Macedo A group committed to establishing an international Islamic empire and reportedly linked to Al Qaeda is stepping up its Western recruitment efforts by holding its first official conference in the U.S. Hizb ut-Tahrir is a global Sunni network with reported ties to confessed 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and Al Qaeda in Iraq's onetime leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. It has operated discreetly in the U.S. for decades. Now, it is coming out of the shadows and openly hosting a July 19 conference entitled, "The Fall of Capitalism and the Rise of Islam," at a posh Hilton hotel in a suburb of Chicago. Hizb ut-Tahrir insists that it does not engage in terrorism, and it is not recognized by the State Department as a known terror group. But some terrorism experts say it may be even more dangerous than many groups that are on the terror list. "Hizb ut-Tahrir is one of the oldest, largest indoctrinating organizations for the ideology known as jihadism," Walid Phares, director of the Future of Terrorism Project at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, told FOXNews.com. Phares said that Hizb ut-Tahrir, rather than training members to carry out terrorist acts like Al Qaeda, focuses instead on indoctrinating youths between ages of 9 and 18 to absorb the ideology that calls for the formation of an empire — or "khilafah" — that will rule according to Islamic law and condones any means to achieve it, including militant jihad. Williams - June 11, 2009 Islam is that “old time religion.” - Timothy Drew (a/k/a Noble Drew Ali) In his speech before the University of Cairo, President Barack Obama said that Islam “has always been part of America’s story,” adding that Muslims have “enriched” the United States since the time of its founding.
Mr. Obama’s statement raises a question that few historians, let alone elected officials, have raised in the past. Who was the first American Muslim? Some maintain that this forgotten figure was a Moorish slave who was transported to South Carolina in 1587. This is problematic, since not one scintilla of historical evidence can be used to support this assertion.
Historical evidence, however, does exist to show that Ayuiba Suleiman Diallo and Omar ibn Said were transported to the New World as slaves in 1731. But this evidence also shows that these slaves were returned to Africa in 1734.
A few Muslim writers maintain that America’s first Muslim was a Native American named Mahomet. The basis of this claim is that the name of Mahomet bears a resemblance to the name of the Prophet of Allah. The same argument, of course, could be employed to establish that Mahomet was a Mahican or a Mahayana.
If Mahomet doesn’t qualify, others argue, the title must belong to Peter Salem, a former slave who fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill. This noble figure, we are told, must have been a Muslim since “Salem” bears an etymological resemblance to “Salaam,” the Arabic word for peace. Such arguments could be used more convincingly to contend that this stalwart figure’s home was Salem, Massachusetts.
When all attempts fail to produce one believing Muslim who lived in colonial America, Islamic revisionists turn to legend and the story “Old Tom,” a 19th century slave on a Georgia plantation, who purportedly proclaimed on his death-bed: “Allah is God and Muhammad is his prophet.”
Of course, there isn’t documentation to show that “Old Tom the Mohammadan” ever lived, let alone uttered shahadah being giving up the ghost. Who was America’s first Muslim? - Introducing Timothy Drew Islam did not arrive in the New World with a boatload of black slaves or Muslim missionaries. It did not emerge from the cotton fields or the halls of ivy. Islam made its first appearance in the form of Timothy Drew, an African-American conman and two-bit snake oil salesman, who popped up on a street corner in Newark, New Jersey circa 1910 as the “Savior Prophet of Allah.”
Timothy Drew is not a subject of Black History Month. He has not been the subject of a PBS documentary, nor that of a critical biography. Most history professors, even at prestigious black universities, know little about him. But few African-American leaders have cast a larger shadow. Without Drew, there would be no black leaders such as Elijah Mohammed, Malcolm X, Mukasa Dada, Stokely Carmichael, H. Rap Brown, or Louis Farrakhan; no organizations such as the Black Power Movement, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, the Death Angels, or the New Black Panthers; no rap and hip-hop artists such as Public Enemy, Ice Cube, KRS-One, X-Clan, or Lauryn Hill; and no Barack Hussein Obama.
By 1913, Timothy Drew, now known as Noble Drew Ali, managed to convince hundreds of Newark Negroes that they were not the descendants of African slaves, but the sons and daughters of Berber Moors, the very Moors who had introduced slavery to the Ivory Coast. In 1913, he opened what is reportedly the first mosque in America - the HolyMoabiteTemple of the Science of the World, also known as the CanaaniteTemple. “The Moors were living up and down the Mississippi River before the European man came to them,” Drew told his flock. “The bananas were large and the grapes were four-in-hand. It took two men with hand sticks to carry a bunch of grapes.”[i]
No one within the Moorish Science Movement came to realize that the Prophet Muhammad viewed the black race with contempt and referred to Negroes as “raisin heads” several times in the Hadith (I:662; 9:256).[ii] Girdles and Snake Oil The male members of the temple were required to wear an official red fez (available for $3), a girdle (priced at $5) and a robe (at the cost of $5).[iii] Women were obliged to cover their hair at all public gatherings and to augment their headpieces with a blue and oval Moorish pin (sold for $3). All members were encouraged to add “Bey” or “El” to their names in order to signify their Moorish descent on their membership cards (renewable yearly for $1).
The reception of such membership cards, Drew told his flock, represented relinquishment of their U.S. citizenship. “By being born here doesn’t make you a citizen,” Drew told his disciples. This claim resulted in the refusal of many temple members to comply with the Selective Service Act of 1917.
The new American Muslims were obliged to attend Friday worship services and to make payment of the monthly dues of $2 for men and $1 for women. They were encouraged to purchase Noble Drew’s magical elixirs - Old Moorish Healing Oil, Moorish Blood Purifier Bath Compound, and Moorish Herbal Tea for Human Ailments for a nominal fee.[iv] “My remedies,” Drew proclaimed, “will cure you of anything you weren’t born with.”[v] The New Mecca The Newark temple became so successful that the Prophet opened branch temples in Harlem, Brooklyn, Philadelphia, Pittsburg, Cleveland, Toledo, Flint, Detroit, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Kansas City, Norfolk, and Louisville, Kentucky.[vi] In 1925, Drew relocated to Chicago, where he established the central shrine of the movement on Indiana Avenue. “Chicago, Illinois is going to be our new Mecca,” he said.[vii]
By 1926, when the Moorish Science Temple became a legal corporation, the movement had garnered more than 32,000 adherents. Within the next three years, a host of other temples - 36 in all - were established throughout the country. The temples were governed by Grand Sheikhs and “Grand Sheikhesses” [sic] who had been appointed by Noble Drew. One such “Grand Sheikhess” turned out to be Pearl Jones Ali, the aunt of one of the Noble Drew’s wives.[viii]
By 1929, the Chicago branch of the Moorish Science Temple boasted 12,000 members; the Detroit branch 10,000. The movement operated grocery stores, clothing shops, and The Moorish Voice, a national newspaper. Who’s Muhammed??? A Muslim from the Middle East, who happened to stumble into one of Drew’s Moorish Temples on a Friday night, would have thought that all Bedlam or Parnassus had been let out. The temple members with their red fezzes, yellow pantaloons, and curled slippers, knew nothing of the five pillars of Islam. They prayed standing upright with two fingers lifted on one hand and five on the other. They were ignorant of the exordium and even the basmalah. They claimed that the Prophet Muhammad was a black man, even though various hadiths spoke of the whiteness of the Prophet’s skin. They fancied that the holy city of Islam was Morocco, not Mecca. They upheld shocking shirks, such as their insistence that Noble Drew was the divinely ordained prophet of Allah - a heresy in Islam which taught that the age of the prophets had ended with the death of Muhammad. And they presented themselves as “angelic gods,” even though the words of the shahadah - Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Llah (”I testify that there is no God but Allah”) - represented the basis of Muslim belief. Fame, Fortune and Polygamy Such matters appeared to be of little concern to Drew and his followers in October 1928, when the first national convention of the Moorish Science Temple took place in Chicago. By this time, Drew’s movement boasted more than 100,000 followers, and his annual salary was listed at $36,000, a fortune at the time.[ix] The Prophet received additional stipends for his living expenses, including the mortgage payment for his luxurious trappings on Chicago’s south side, and the salaries for his chauffeur, maid, butler and other domestic attendants. He kept several wives, a host of concubines, and fathered, at least, 20 children.[x] When he tired of one wife, he would quietly “divorce” her and “marry another.” He also kept four women at the same time and paid for each to live in separate homes. Murder and Madness On March 12, 1929, Claude Greene Bey, Drew’s personal chaffeur, staged a coup by pronouncing himself the Grand Sheikh, stripping Drew’s headquarters of all files and furniture, and setting up a rival temple at the Unity House on the north side of Chicago, where he began to call for assassination of all whites and all Moors who objected to his leadership. Drew imported some thugs, including Ira Johnson Bey from Pittsburgh, to quell the rebellion. Three days later, Greene was shot and stabbed to death in the alleyway behind Unity House.[xi]
Drew, while hosting a party to celebrate Greene’s demise, was arrested as an accessory to homicide. Released on bail, Drew hastily promoted David Ford-el, a/k/a Master Fard Muhammad, as the acting head of the movement on July 20, 1929. It was not a prudent move. Fard was a criminal with 58 aliases. He had served three years in San Quentin before gaining release on May 27, 1929.[xii]He purchased a one-wat ticket to Chicago, where he joined the Moorish Science Temple.
One month later, Noble Drew Ali was found dead at his home. The cause of his death has never been determined. Several of his followers speculated that he died as a result of injuries sustained in beatings from the police; others insisted that he had been murdered by his rivals. An autopsy was never conducted and a full-scale police investigation never conducted.
The future of Islam in America came to rest with Fard Muhammad, the acting Grand Sheikh, who had packed up his bags and headed off for Detroit to form the Nation of Islam - a movement that gave rise to Elijah Muhammad, Malcolm X, and Muhammad Ali. Drew’s Legacy Timothy Drew - an uneducated and unscrupulous con artist - convinced the black community in America that Islam is their native religion and that Christianity represents the oppressive religion of the white man. At present, Islam is the fastest growing religion in America, and 90 percent of the converts are African-Americans. Sixty percent of these African-Americans are converted to Islam in prison. Many of the temples that Drew established are now Wahhabist mosques that serve to flame the fire of Jihad and to incite anti-American sentiment among the poor and disenfranchised residents of the nation’s inner cities.  An advertisement in the new issue of the Weekly Standard is most welcome to those who argue the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) inflates its support among American Muslims. The ad notes that U.S. government officials have been "mostly baffled by extremism among American Muslims," a state best illustrated by past, warm relations with CAIR: "We, the undersigned American Muslims, have long known the true character of CAIR and its allies." The FBI broke off most contacts with CAIR last summer and has indicated "certain issues" must be resolved by CAIR leaders before its access is restored. Those issues appear connected to evidence in the terror-finance trial of the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development (HLF) which ended with the conviction of five men on 108 counts related to Hamas-support last November. Sentencing is scheduled for late May. Evidence in the trial places CAIR founders in pivotal conversations among members of a secret Hamas-support network in the U.S. Other transcripts indicate CAIR was a direct outgrowth of that network. The advertisement It was placed by the Center for Islamic Pluralism and signed by four center officials – President Kemal Silay, Executive Director Stephen Suleyman Schwartz, fellow Imaad Malik, Nawab Agha Mousvi and Southern Director Jalal Zuberi. Joining them were Supna Zaidi, an assistant director at Islamist Watch, M. Zuhdi Jasser, founder of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy, Khalim Massoud of Muslims Against Sharia, Kiran Sayyed of the Council for Democracy and Tolerance, and Shia.Protest@yahoo.com. Under the heading "American Muslims Commend FBI for Rejection of CAIR," the group explains the reasons it supports the FBI move. Among them: "We observe their commitment to radical aims, their attempts to chill free speech by calling critics of radical Islam "Islamophobes," and their false, ugly accusations against moderate American Muslims who disagree with their agenda.

 Lost in the blur of slogansBy Ishmael Khaldi Last year, at UC Berkeley, I had the opportunity to "dialogue" with some of the organizers of these events. My perspective is unique, both as the vice consul for Israel in San Francisco, and as a Bedouin and the highest-ranking Muslim representing the Israel in the United States. I was born into a Bedouin tribe in Northern Israel, one of 11 children, and began life as shepherd living in our family tent. I went on to serve in the Israeli border police, and later earned a master's degree in political science from Tel Aviv University before joining the Israel Foreign Ministry. I am a proud Israeli - along with many other non-Jewish Israelis such as Druze, Bahai, Bedouin, Christians and Muslims, who live in one of the most culturally diversified societies and the only true democracy in the Middle East. Like America, Israeli society is far from perfect, but let us deals honestly. By any yardstick you choose - educational opportunity, economic development, women and gay's rights, freedom of speech and assembly, legislative representation - Israel's minorities fare far better than any other country in the Middle East So, I would like to share the following with organizers of Israel Apartheid week, for those of them who are open to dialogue and not blinded by a hateful ideology: You are part of the problem, not part of the solution: If you are really idealistic and committed to a better world, stop with the false rhetoric. We need moderate people to come together in good faith to help find the path to relieve the human suffering on both sides of the Israel-Palestinian conflict. Vilification and false labeling is a blind alley that is unjust and takes us nowhere. You deny Israel the fundamental right of every society to defend itself: You condemn Israel for building a security barrier to protect its citizens from suicide bombers and for striking at buildings from which missiles are launched at its cities - but you never offer an alternative. Aren't you practicing yourself a deep form of racism by denying an entire society the right to defend itself? Your criticism is willfully hypocritical: Do Israel's Arab citizens suffer from disadvantage? You better believe it. Do African Americans 10 minutes from the Berkeley campus suffer from disadvantage - you better believe it, too. So should we launch a Berkeley Apartheid Week, or should we seek real ways to better our societies and make opportunity more available. You are betraying the moderate Muslims and Jews who are working to achieve peace: Your radicalism is undermining the forces for peace in Israel and in the Palestinian territories. We are working hard to move toward a peace agreement that recognizes the legitimate rights of both Israel and the Palestinian people, and you are tearing down by falsely vilifying one side. To the organizers of Israel Apartheid Week I would like to say: If Israel were an apartheid state, I would not have been appointed here, nor would I have chosen to take upon myself this duty. There are many Arabs, both within Israel and in the Palestinian territories who have taken great courage to walk the path of peace. You should stand with us, rather than against us.  A survey finds Muslims are happiest in the U.S.Life in America is a mixed bag for Muslim Americans, said Jane Lampman in The Christian Science Monitor. The nation's youngest and most racially diverse community is still struggling for a sense of belonging, partly because some others harbor "post-9/11 suspicions about the Islamic faith." But a Gallup survey found that Muslims are among the most highly educated and prosperous religious groups in the U.S.
Not only that, said Rachel Abrams in The Weekly Standard, but it turns out that American Muslims "are pretty much the happiest in the world." And it's not surprising. "They're citizens of the most welcoming and inclusive place on Earth," a country where desperate immigrants find refuge from tyranny and "grinding poverty."
Now it's time for Muslim Americans to take the next step, said Amreena Hussain in the Baltimore Sun. Muslims are still largely excluded - "or exclude themselves" - from American social and political life. "It is time we realized that we have left our monarchies and dictatorships on a different continent and arrived in a land where we can assert ourselves." Source: The Week

If you are willing to sign a letter to Obama, we have the foundation of an all-American MCC-type secular Muslim organization. The least the four of you can do is to reply to this message.
As far as the people you mentioned in your message, they are all in it for their INDIVIDUAL careers and fame, and I do not mean that in a negative way. This is a disease that has afflicted many bright Muslim secularists. They only prefer to fly solo, not in formation. Formation flying requires caring and wrrying for your wingman and the other planes, while solo flying like Gary Powers is a great thrill, until one gets shot down.
What Irshad Manji, Eteraz and Mona do not realize is that solo flyers rarely leave the people on the ground in awe or moved, while formation flights do exactly the opposite. Hence, even though we are individually not as glistening as the star performers of the USA, we in the MCC have moved mountains.
In a few months we will have MCC type orgs in Holland, France and Germany as well as UK and Denmark. It would be a pity if we cannot do this in US.
So please do let me know if you are prepared to affix your signatures on this open letter. If not, that is OK, but please do lend me the courtesy of a response, an affirmation or a regret.
BTW, I’ll be back in Toronto on Saturday morning. I can tell you folks that the MCC is seen among European Secular Muslims as a role model. We have a huge fight to win and so please lend your leadership your shoulder to carry the weight and at times to cry on, please.
