Jihadist who tried to murder cartoonist for depicting Muhammad as violent faces terror charge

Islam is a Religion of Peace -- or else. "Somali Faces Terror Charge for Cartoonist Attack," from AP, January 11

COPENHAGEN (AP) -- Prosecutors filed a preliminary charge of terrorism Monday against a Somali man accused of trying to kill a Danish cartoonist who caricatured the Prophet Muhammad.

The man had faced a preliminary charge of attempted murder for breaking into Kurt Westergaard's home in Aarhus, in western Denmark, Jan. 1 armed with a knife and an ax.

Prosecutor Marian Thomsen said investigators changed the preliminary charge to terrorism, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison, after questioning the suspect over the weekend for the first time since his arrest.

Westergaard, 74, locked himself in a safe room and was not injured. The suspect was shot by police in the hand and knee, but was not seriously injured and is being held in jail pending the outcome of the investigation....

The suspect claims he only wanted to scare Westergaard and has denied all the allegations except the weapons charge, according to his lawyer, Niels Christian Strauss.

He only wanted to "scare" Westergaard by hacking through one door with an axe and working on another before he was stopped by police? He needs to work on his taqiyya technique.

Denmark: Somali terrorist was role model for integration

Update: According to MMG's lawyer, PET tried to recruit him three times, as a collaborator or informant, but he refused and told them that he couldn't help them with anything. (DA)

The Somali who tried to kill Kurt Westergaard this past Friday is Muhideen Jelle, according to the Kenyan media, or Muhudiin M. Geele. The Danish media now refer to him as MMG

I added another story below - MMG's ex-wife and sister claim that the Danish security service tried recruiting him after he came back from his Jihad trip to Somalia. What we don't know is whether they succeeded. It could certainly explain why he wasn't being followed.

Taking the two articles together - MMG went to Somalia in 2005. In 2006 PET tried to recruit him. By 2007 he was recruiting Danish Somalis to Jihad in Somalia. In 2008 he was collecting money in Sweden for Jihad. He then returned to Somalia. He was arrested in Kenya in 2009. The Kenyan authorities apparently didn't want to deal with a terrorism trial against him and so deported him back to Denmark.

Who is Abdi?

The 28 year old Somali with the short nickname who attacked Kurt Westergaard Friday with an axe in the cartoonist's home in Aarhus is a man with two faces: the good and the evil.

He's up for a long prison sentence for two attempted murders. He has experience as a fighter and sympathizes with the most brutal terrorists in East Africa.

But Abdi also has a past as a caring father to three children, of which the youngest is two and the oldest seven, and as a teenager he was a respected role model in Aalborg.

Three of the men who know Abdi's past in the north Jutland town best confirm this.

Ekstra Bladet spoke yesterday with Jens Larsen, head of a local club for immigrants, Nuuradiin Hussein, a social worker in Aalborg Municipality, who both had great expectations for Abdi, and Mohammed Abdulle, board member of the mosque in Danmarksgade.

They can almost not praise him enough. But Abdi didn't want to be a model for integration and Danish community support.

"Suddenly he evidently wanted revenge," says Mohammed Abdulle.

Abdi came to Denmark with a big sister in 1997. In Aalborg Øst they were united with their mother [who had come to Denmark in 1995]. Their father was dead.

Abdi quickly stood out in the New Danes group of 38 Somali boys who showed up in town as the jetsam of war and famine.

"He was calmer and quieter than the others - more mature. While several of the others rowdy and had smart jargon and tested the limits with threats and fights, Abdi kept himself in the background. He thought what the others were doing was stupid and honestly said who we should watch," remembers former youth counselor Nuuradiin Hussein, who today is a social worker for Aalborg Municipality.

The friendly, serious boy was a clear success. He distinguished himself with fluent Danish, good grades from technical school, and easily got a job in elderly nursing, cleaning or care for the elderly. For several years he was a homework tutor and mentor for young immigrant troublemakers in Aalborg.

"He was never in an A-class. Abdi didn't need that. He was very active," says Mohammed Abdulle, who is also spokesperson for the Somali Cultural Association.

But something went wrong. A seed sprouted and grew and smashed Abdi's marriage and opportunities in Denmark.

"It's a shame. He was really a great kid. Maybe the last young Somali people would suspect of going to ruin," says Jens Larsen, head of the municipal leisure club Fri-Stedet, which is mainly aimed at young immigrants.

But popular among other Somali boys, he wasn't.

"Nah. We was a little isolated. He wasn't good at 'scoring' with girls and playing football. The things which typically give status," explains Nuuradiin Hussein.

As an adolescent he married the person Somalis call 'the sweetest girl in Aarlborg'. A girl from a good, well-integrated family.

The wedding was a show of success. Abdi dropped out of his engagements as homework tutor and mentor. As the years passed he isolated himself more. Secretly he cultivated a more radical interpretation of Islam that the others in the mosque. His great computer know-how opened a new world on YouTube. In the same period he sported a goatee.

"We noticed that Abdi and another young Somali suddenly didn't want to greet women," says Nuuradiin Hussein.

The friend moved to years ago to London, a known incubator of Islamism. He hasn't shown himself in Aalborg since.

Ekstra Bladet learned that in 2007 Abdi was seen recruiting other Somalis in Aalborg's neighborhoods of apartment blocks to the war flaring up in Somalia. This however surprises Nuuradiin Hussein: "Abdi isn't a strong person. He doesn't have the assertiveness to win people over to an issue."

His harsh religious attitudes and wish to go to war were purportedly not his wife's cup of tea. The marriage creaked.

But consideration for the family had to give. While the bloody war was at its highest, Abdi traveled twice to his homeland. Ekstra Bladet learned that he got the rank of officer. After one of the trips he supposedly came back injured to Aalborg.

Nuuradin Hussein met him shortly afterward in the mosque at Danmarksgade.

"People only go to Somalia if they have pain in their life. I'm certain that this also holds for Abdi. He was unusually quiet. Most others who were in Somalia then, talked a lot. Abdi said nothing. He was really hard to read.

Last year Abdi finally broke up with his wife. They divorced and Abdi moved to Copenhagen, where he supported himself since as an IT programmer. Secretly, according to the Police Security Service, he cultivated his new contacts in al-Qaeda in Kenya and the brutal organization al-Shabaab.

As late as last summer he was in Kenya, where he was arrested. Officially because his travel papers weren't valid. Unofficially, because he was suspected of being an accomplice with East-African terror networks.

Abdi was put on a plane home in September, after which he settled down in the Copenhagen suburb of Hvidovre.

The ambitious terrorist sympathizer visited Aalborg since. In the mosque he enjoyed time with his children. Nice and friendly, the good Abdi.

The last months, before Abdi came to Grøndalsvej with an axe and a knife, he disappeared. Nobody suspected anything wrong. Certainly not in Aalborg.

"It was a shock for his family, and a hard blow for all Somalis," says club head Jens Larsen.

"I don't understand it. He should have continued his battle in Somalia, if he was so abnormal," says Nuuradiin.

"Who is he? I don't know. There must be something very wrong mentally with the man I knew," says Mohamed Hussein.

The family is hiding. Abdi's mother went to Sweden. He ex-wife left the apartment at Konvalvej with the couple's three children, and the sister of the country's most discussed immigrant, opens the door just a crack: "I don't want to talk about it. I don't have time." And she slams the door.

Reports: Cartoonist assailant plotted attack against Hillary Clinton

Danish media say the man who attacked an artist who depicted the Prophet Muhammad in a cartoon has previously been arrested in Kenya.

The Politiken newspaper reported Sunday that Danish intelligence knew the 28-year-old Somali man was held in Kenya in September for allegedly plotting an attack against US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Citing unnamed sources, the newspaper said he was later released due to lack of evidence.

But Denmark's ambassador to Kenya, Bo Jensen, told the news agency Ritzau the man was arrested in Kenya for incomplete travel documents.

He said Kenyan authorities never told the embassy he was suspected in any terror plot.

Denmark's PET intelligence agency would not comment.

The armed suspect was charged with attempted murder Saturday after breaking into artist Kurt Westergaard's home.

Update: Somali terrorist targets cartoonist's home

AN axe-wielding Somali terrorist is behind a foiled attempt to break into the home of a Danish cartoonist whose depictions of Islam's Prophet Mohammed infuriated Muslims.

The 28-year-old Somali national armed with an axe and a knife had terrorist intent and was close to the Somali Shebab movement and al-Qaeda, which was responsible for the 9/11 attacks in the United States, the internal security service PET said in a statement.

Danish police shot and wounded the man who tried to enter Westergarrd’s home.

He was shot in a knee and a hand but his life was not in danger, according to reports. He was expected to be charged with attempted murder of Westergaard and a police officer. It is understood the Somali man had a legal permit to be in Denmark.

Kurt Westergaard, who has received several death threats since a Danish newspaper four years ago published his drawing featuring Prophet Mohammed wearing a turban in the shape of a bomb, was at home in Viby near the western city of Aarhus guarded by police when the intruder tried to get in.

Prosecutors said a Chicago-based men spent at least a year working with a Pakistan-based terrorist group to plan an attack.

The security alarm was set off when the man tried to enter the house before being shot by the guards, the daily Politiken reported online. The intruder, wounded in the arm and leg, was hospitalised.

It is unclear whether the Somali man managed to enter the home.

“I locked myself in our safe room. He tried to smash the entrance door with an axe,'' Westergaard, 74, who was in the house with a five-year-old grandson, told Danish news agency Ritzau.

PET said in a statement: “The attempted murder of cartoonist Kurt Westergaard is linked to terrorism. The person arrested ... has close links with the Somali terrorist organisation al-Shebab as well as with the heads of al-Qaeda in east Africa.

“He is also suspected of being implicated in terrorist activities when he was in east Africa. The individual arrested has also been a member of a terrorist network implanted in Denmark that has been under surveillance by PET for a long time.''

Police had earlier reported there were three intruders before saying there was just one.

Ritzau said a dozen police vehicles were at the scene while sappers were sent in to look for a bomb that might have been laid.

Westergaard is one of 12 cartoonists whose drawings of the Muslim prophet were first published in Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten in September 2005, sparking controversy among Muslims worldwide.

The 12 cartoons were considered offensive by many Muslims and their publication sparked violent protests worldwide in January and February 2006.

Two men had already been arrested in 2006 for plotting Westergaard's murder.

Demonstrators burned Danish flags in protests that culminated in February 2006 with the torching of Danish diplomatic offices in Damascus and Beirut and dozens of deaths in Nigeria, Libya and Pakistan.

Melbourne terror raids spark angry local backlash

Abdurahman Osman
Abdurahman Osman says police should have talked to Somali leaders
before the raids. (So the terrorists would have enough time to leave)
Padraic Murphy | August 07

HATE-filled messages on a Muslim website claim an alleged plot to attack an Australian army base would have been justified.

And Somali community leaders have branded police as terrorists in the wake of this week's anti-terror swoop.

Abdurahman Osman, a leader of Melbourne's 15,000 strong Somali community, said police acted unreasonably.

"What do you call waking people up at four in the morning with guns?" he said.

"It is the police themselves that are the terrorists.

"They had 400 police and 19 raids, but they did not find anything. No guns, no ammunition, nothing.

"Now we have our kids being called terrorists at school."

Mr Osman's outburst came as a prominent Muslim website featured a photograph of Australian soldiers in uniform with the caption: "Real Australian terrorists."

It also features a photograph of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd addressing Australian troops overseas with the caption: "Terrorist mastermind delivers sermon to impressionable followers."

"Mohammed" said on the website: "Why is it called terrorist attack when the Aussie troops have been raping, killing innocent Muslims for years?

"In this country we can't trust nobody. The Australian Government is corrupted."

One posting suggested Australian soldiers were an appropriate target for the alleged Melbourne terrorist cell.

"More than a million innocent civilians have died as an outcome of the war on terror that our soldiers are involved in," Aussie-Muslim Tazza said.

Mr Osman, until now a voice of moderation between Somalis and the wider community, said police should have consulted migrant leaders.

"The federal police could have come to us first and we could have helped them," Mr Osman said.

"We have met with them now, but we don't believe they have evidence of a terrorist plot and that is the feeling of the community."

Other Somalis accused Australian authorities of bigotry.

"As a Somali-born Australian I am outraged at these raids not only because my fellow Somalis are being targeted, but once again basic human rights are being violated," said Xamxam, a 21-year-old Sunshine woman who knows the family of accused terrorist Nayef El Sayed.

"If there was strong evidence against him, I would back up the police."

Abdullahi Ahmed, a salesman who has lived in Australian for almost 30 years, said he knew accused terrorist Saney Aweys.

He said Mr Aweys was a road worker and a dedicated family man.

"He was married only about a week ago. His family are here," Mr Ahmed said.

Mr Ahmed said Somalis in Australia would petition US President Barack Obama to stop the war in Afghanistan.

"There are innocent people being killed there. The Americans and the Australians are the ones making terror."

More Minneapolis Somalis Dying in Homeland

Somalia
A sad, scary story in Minneapolis' Somali community is getting worse with news that Zakaria Maruf was killed Saturday in Somalia. He becomes the fourth Minneapolis area Somali to die in his homeland in the past year.

Maruf was featured in this New York Times report published Sunday, where he was cast as a recruiter trying to lure more young Somalis to join him in fighting with the Al-Shabab terrorist group.

It isn't clear how Maruf died. Two days earlier, a 20-year-old named Jamal Bana was seen on a website dead from a gunshot to the head, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

In June, Burhan Hassan was shot and killed apparently after deciding to quit Al-Shabab and return to Minnesota.

Last October, Shirwa Ahmed became the first known American to carry out a suicide bombing, driving an explosive-laden truck into a government compound as part of a series of Al-Shabab attacks.

The FBI reportedly has criminal investigations in Minneapolis and several other cities into the recruitment of the Somalis and the financing of their travel back to their homeland. More than 20 young men are believed to have made the journey to join the Somali jihad, with Maruf being one of the first. Read more ...

Islamists Sabotage Assimilation of Somali-Americans
Some are returning to Africa to fight as jihadists - and that's just part of the problem.

Somalia
By Brendan Goldman

The mainstream media has publicized a few cases of Somali-American youth that have returned to their homeland to fight for Islamist forces there. What the media has neglected to investigate is how Islamist members of the Somali-American community have formed organizations to advocate their agenda here in the United States. These organizations, which claim to represent the larger Somali community, silence moderate Muslim voices and impede the integration of Somalis into American society.

There are approximately 200,000 Somalis living in the United States, the largest community of 70,000 people residing in Minneapolis-St. Paul (population statistics for Somalis in America are rough estimates because many Somalis are here as refugees and therefore are not counted in official surveys). According to Andrew Liepman, the deputy director of intelligence at the National Counterterrorism Center, Somali-Americans face “greater insularity compared to other, more integrated Muslim immigrant communities, [which] has aggravated the challenge of assimilation for their children.” Read more ...

Little Somali Islamonazis Harassing a Gay Man in Minneapolis

By Amita Parashar

Approximately 15 youths physically and verbally taunted a gay man as he was leaving Twin Cities Pride in Minneapolis on Saturday, in an incident captured on video.

The Somali youths asked the man if he was gay, and when he responded yes, the young people yelled "I hate gay people" and reportedly threw rocks at the man, whose name is not known.

On the video various youths can be heard saying "I hate gay people" repeatedly, along with "Gay is not the way" and "Fuck gay people. They can go fuck each other."

About one minute into the video, a police officer can be seen walking through the crowd of young people.

The man who was taunted walked away, telling the kids, "See how I'm not scared at all?"

Spanish navy captures pirates suspected of cruise attack

Somali Pirates

April 28

A SPANISH warship has intercepted a skiff carrying nine suspected Somali pirates believed to have attacked an Italian cruise ship at the weekend, the defence ministry said today.

The Numancia frigate “intercepted a skiff with nine occupants who could be connected to the hijacking attempt of the Italian cruise ship which was eventually repelled by the boat,” it said in a statement.

The cruise liner Melody, carrying more than 1,500 people, was attacked on Saturday but Israeli security guards on board the ship responded to the pirates' gunfire and were able to repel them.

After the hijacking attempt The Numancia, along with patrol planes from France and the Seychelles and an Indian navy ship, launched a high-seas hunt for the assailants.

During the search, the naval mission found “two small boats with nine suspects on board very close to the scene of the attack against the cruise,” the Spanish defence ministry said.

The suspects abandoned one the boats and were later caught in the skiff. The Spanish navy handed over the suspects to a Seychelles ship since they were captured in the island nation's waters in the Indian Ocean.

A commander of the pirates who attacked the cruise ship described the bandits' attempt to seize the boat in an interview with AFP today.

“Unfortunately, for technical reasons, we could not seize the ship,” Mohamed Muse told AFP by phone from the pirate lair of Eyl, in the northern Somali breakaway state of Puntland.

“We were aware that hijacking such a big ship would have been a new landmark in piracy off the coast of Somalia but unfortunately they used good tactics and we were not able to board,” he said.

“It was not the first time we went for that kind of ship and this time we came closer to capturing it and we really sprayed it with gunfire,” Muse said.

The captain of the cruise liner, Ciro Pinto, said the attack had felt like a war, and praised the response of the security guards.

“The ship was very big and there were only a dozen pirates involved in the attack so we eventually had to decide to back off after chasing it for close to 30 minutes,” Muse said.

Somali pirates are currently holding at least 16 ships and more than 250 seamen to ransom. Attacks surged in April as calm seas allowed them to approach their prey more easily and dodge the increasing naval presence in the region.

Somali Muslims Changing Small Tennessee Town

Shelbyville
Tens of thousands of Somali refugees have resettled in America in recent years to escape the chaos of their homeland, but the transition isn't going smoothly in one small town.

By Erick Stakelbeck

It has been nearly 20 years since Somalia last had a functioning government. Islamic Jihadists now control most of the country – and sharia is the law of the land. Tens of thousands of Somali refugees have resettled in America in recent years to escape the chaos of their homeland, which is located in the Horn of Africa.

But the transition isn't going smoothly in one small town.

At first glance, Shelbyville is your typical sleepy southern hamlet. It's nestled in middle Tennessee, where the walking horse is king.

There's Main St., the local sheriff, a movie theatre. It's all very "Mayberry," except for one big difference: the recent arrival of hundreds of Somali Muslims. Read more ...

Source: 'Several' Missing Somali-Americans Back in U.S. After Overseas Terror Mission

Abubakar As-Saddiqu
Families that belong to this Minnesota mosque,
Abubakar As-Saddiqu,
were suspected of having a role in their loved ones' disappearance.
Many of the Somali-American men who were recruited to join an Al Qaeda-linked terrorist group overseas have returned to the United States, according to a source familiar with an FBI investigation into the matter — but the FBI still has not revealed publicly if it is pursuing arrests in the case.

"Some of the guys who were missing aren't missing anymore," the source said. "Some of them got blown up and some of them came back, and some of them are still there [in Somalia]."

For several months the FBI has been investigating at least 20 Somali-American men from the Minneapolis area who traveled to war-torn Somalia, where some of them trained and fought with an Al Qaeda-linked terrorist group known as al-Shabaab, according to counterterrorism officials.

Asked to characterize how many of those men are now back on American soil, the source would only say that "several" have returned. Federal authorities believe the men went to Somalia to join al-Shabaab, which has been warring with the moderate Somali government since 2006.

Usama bin Laden weighed in Thursday on the battle. In an audiotape posted online, the Al Qaeda leader urged Somalis to fight against the Somali government, insisting, "The war which has been taking place on your soil these past years is a war between Islam and the international crusade." Are Somali Jihadists in Nashville?
Is an Islamic center in Nashville advocating Jihadist activity against America?

ICN
By Dave Gaubatz

For a few days in February and March of this year, my field counterterrorism researchers and I visited Nashville, Tennessee. I had obtained information in Richmond, Virginia, that a group of Muslims originally from Somalia had relocated to Nashville. Additionally, there were several media organizations (conservative and liberal) and individuals reporting concerns for our national security in regards to some Somali nationals missing from various U.S. cities and likely organizing to commit Jihadist activity against America.

During my counterterrorism lectures and training, I have often said the truth is somewhere in the middle. Never focus solely on what organizations slanted to the extreme right or extreme left inform the American public. More importantly, I advocate only using first-hand intelligence and do not rely on open source intelligence. The only method to determine if Muslims from Somalia were advocating Islamic Jihadist ideologies in America was to conduct research in predominately Somalian Islamic Centers. The Al-Farooq Islamic Center in Nashville was selected as a start. Read more ...

Waiting for the American Jihad: The waxing of radical Islam in America comes as the issue seems to be waning in importance with Obama administration.

Radical Islam
By Gary Bauer

Last October, Shirwa Ahmed blew himself up in a homicide bombing in Somalia. What distinguished Ahmed from other jihadists is that he was a 27-year old college student from Minneapolis and a naturalized American citizen, which made him the first U.S. citizen to become an Islamic homicide bomber.

Ahmed’s unusual path to martyrdom got the attention of American counterterrorism officials, who now report that more than a dozen Somali-American youths have disappeared so far this year. They are suspected to have returned to Somalia to wage jihad. Concerned about the radicalization of Muslim youths in America, the FBI is running active investigations in at least five major American cities.

These developments beg the question: If terrorist organizations can recruit American Muslims to travel to Africa to wage jihad, what’s stopping them from recruiting American Muslims to wage jihad in America? As Moar Jamal, Executive Director of the Somali Justice Advocacy Center in St. Paul, put it, “That kid that blew himself up in Somalia could have done it here in Minneapolis.” Read more ...

Grand jury convenes in FBI terror case against Minneapolis Muslims, mosque

The Somali faithful at the mosque in question
The Somali faithful at the mosque in question
By Mike Levine

Federal authorities are looking to bring terror-related charges against one or more Somali-Americans from the Minneapolis area, and witnesses to the case have been subpoenaed to testify before a federal grand jury, according to a Muslim leader in the area and a woman who said she testified before the grand jury this morning.

For several months the FBI has been investigating about a dozen Somali-American men who disappeared from their homes in the Minneapolis area late last year and may have joined terrorist groups overseas. One of the men, 27-year-old Shirwa Ahmed, later blew himself up in Somalia. The FBI recently called him the first U.S. citizen to carry out a suicide bombing, and FBI Director Mueller said he was "radicalized in his hometown in Minnesota."

The FBI has interviewed at least 50 people in the Somali community and subpoenaed at least 10 people to testify before a grand jury in Minneapolis, according to Farhan Hurre, the director of the Abubakar As-Saddique Islamic Center in St. Paul, one of the largest mosques in the Twin Cities. He said most of those subpoenaed are students at the University of Minnesota. At least two of the men still missing were students at the University of Minnesota. Read more ...

Pirates drown after taking ransom

Sirius Star
January 11, 2009

SIX Somali pirates who hijacked a Saudi supertanker drowned with their share of the ransom when their boat capsized as it left the vessel, their leader said yesterday.

Four others were missing with their share of the $3m payoff, which been parachuted on to the tanker on Friday, Mohamed Said said by phone from the port of Harardhere.

"The small boat that was carrying those killed and eight who survived was overloaded ... they were afraid of a chase from outsiders (foreign navies of the combined maritime forces)," he said.

Mohamud Aden, a resident of the port off which the tanker had been anchored watched by the warships, said: "The capsize was an accident. The pirates were full of joy and partially frightened by the presence of foreign war machines and were speeding.

That was a tragedy for the pirates." In all, several dozen raiders had held the ship and its 25-member crew, including two Britons, to ransom.

They were well-armed and disciplined but as soon as they got the ransom a shootout nearly broke out, it was reported. The 1,080ft Sirius Star, owned by Aramco, is the largest vessel hijacked by the Somali pirates.

It was seized in November in the Indian Ocean, well outside the raiders' usual operating area. The tanker was carrying 2m barrels of oil, more than a quarter of Saudi Arabia's daily output and worth an estimated $100m.

Its capture was seen as a dramatic demonstration of the pirates' ability to strike hundreds of miles offshore. The tanker's crew included second officer Jim Grady, from Renfrewshire, and chief engineer Peter French, from Co Durham.

Yesterday they were looking forward to coming home, though latest reports said the ship was still anchored off Harardhere. More than 100 ships were attacked off the Horn of Africa last year and maritime officials said the problem was out of control.

The pirates were said to have raked in $120m and still hold some 14 merchant ships and 300 crew.

The Sirius Star's release came as the US Fifth Fleet announced that a taskforce targeting piracy would be launching later this month. Nato and the European Union have warships in the Gulf and the Chinese navy has said it will assist.

Somalis Leaving U.S. for Jihad. Incredibly, jihadist recruiting events in America have long been ignored by government and media.

Somalia
By Patrick Poole

The funeral for Shirwa Ahmed last week in Burnsville, Minnesota, punctuated a growing national security threat metastasizing inside the U.S. — one Homeland Security and law enforcement authorities have quickly taken note of. Ahmed, who killed himself in a suicide bombing attack in Somalia in October, is just one of up to 40 men from the Twin Cities area who have disappeared and are feared to have returned to their homeland for training with the al-Shabaab terrorist group to wage jihad.

The FBI is investigating similar disappearances in other major Somali communities in Columbus, OH, Atlanta, Boston, San Diego, and Seattle. There are even reports coming from Europe, recently from Denmark, of Somali men returning home to fight with al-Shabaab and other terrorist organizations. Read more ...

Somalis grow fearful of Islamists

Islamists
By Mohamed Mohamed

Public anger at the recent stoning of a 13-year-old girl in Somalia shows the growing resentment towards radical Islamists who have gained control of much of the south and centre of the country.

Insurgents from the militant group al-Shabab are seen as authoritarian and unaccountable - unlike the Islamists who were in control of the capital, Mogadishu, in 2006.

Asha Ibrahim Dhuhulow was stoned to death for adultery in the southern port city of Kismayo, which was taken control by al-Shabab and its allies in August.

Her 62-year-old aunt told the BBC that the teenager had in fact been raped by three armed men - and she took Asha to the police station to report it.

Several days later, after two suspects had been arrested, she was asked to return to the station with her niece. Read more ...

Somali youth was killed 'in row over alcohol and Islam'

Britain
By Angela Balakrishnan

A gang of five men beat a Somali teenager to death because of a row over Muslims drinking alcohol, a court heard today.

Ahmed Mohammed Ibrahim, 17, was repeatedly hit across the head with a samurai sword, baseball bat, machete and metal pole after being chased in Sefton Park, Liverpool, in March this year.

The teenager became embroiled in the fight after accompanying his cousin, Ahmed Mahamoud Ahmed, 16, to a "straightener" – a one-on-one fight – with the alleged killer Ali Mohammed, 19.

Liverpool crown court heard how Mohammed is believed to have accused Ahmed of breaking Muslim rules by drinking alcohol and held him down while a friend hit his head with a bat.

The 16-year-old boy was chased home where his mother's car windows were smashed, said Tim Holroyde QC, prosecuting.

The next day, Ahmed was lured to the fight - where Mohammed, his two brothers Khadar, 23, Essa, 22, and two cousins lay in wait, it was claimed. Read more ...

Fired Somali workers observe Ramadan as leaders prepare for future action

JBS
Jakob Rodgers

Fired workers from JBS Swift & Co. stayed at home and observed the Ramadan fast with family and friends on Friday as Somali community leaders organized their constituents for possible legal action.

Several organizations, including Somali Aid, the Colorado Muslim Council, the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition as well as faith and labor leaders, joined on Friday in condemning the firing of more than 100 Somali workers on Tuesday for not showing up to work at the JBS Swift plant, according to a release.

Local leaders prepared to hold a meeting today, however, to advise the workers on how to proceed. No Somali workers visited the local unemployment office on Friday as originally planned, according to Graen Isse, spokesperson for the local Somali community; such actions could happen on Monday.

Meanwhile, an investigation continues concerning threatening fliers that were distributed in the plant's cafeteria on Wednesday night that appeared to show people in a protest with signs reading "Behead those who insult Islam."

At least 100 Swift workers let go

Strike
About 100 Muslim workers at the north Greeley JBS Swift & Co. plant were let go Wednesday afternoon.

About 15 Greeley police officers were called to the scene by a Swift security guard as part of the termination. The security guard told police one terminated Swift worker had tried to hit him.

No arrests were made. The worker was escorted off the premises and police remained on the scene for peace keeping purposes.

The workers appeared to be all African. The termination appears to be related to the walkout of Muslim employees on Friday. The workers left their jobs Friday night after they were told they would not be given a break to observe the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Swift issued a statement via e-mail Friday evening about the terminations. The statement said the workers were let go as a result of the Ramadan-related work stoppage last week. Read more ...
