Islamophobes urge Canadian government to ban burqas, niqabs in public -- no, wait...

Actually it was a Canadian Muslim group -- a group that knows full well what these garments mean for the subjugation of women.

But our enlightened multicultural Western governments know better, of course. "Muslim group urges gov't to ban burkas, niqabs in public," from The Canadian Press, October 7

TORONTO -- Middle Eastern garments designed to cover a woman's face are "medieval" and "misogynist" symbols of extremism with no basis in Islam, a Canadian Muslim lobby group said Wednesday as it urged Ottawa to ban the burka and the niqab.

The Muslim Canadian Congress called on the federal government to prohibit the two garments in order to prevent women from covering their faces in public -- a practice the group said has no place in a society that supports gender equality.

"To cover your face is to conceal your identity," congress spokeswoman Farzana Hassan said in a telephone interview, describing the issue as a matter of public safety, since concealing one's identity is a common practice for criminals.

The tradition of Muslim women covering their faces in public is a tradition rooted more in Middle Eastern culture than in the Islamic faith, Hassan added.

There is nothing in any of the primary Islamic religious texts, including the Qur'an, that requires women to cover their faces, she said -- not even in the controversial, ultra-conservative tenets of Sharia law.

Considering the fact that women are in fact forbidden from wearing burkas in the grand mosque in Mecca, Islam's holiest site, it hardly makes sense that the practice should be permitted in Canada, she said.

"If a government claims to uphold equality between men and women, there is no reason for them to support a practice that marginalizes women."...

2 Moderates & Liberals on: from Islamism to Honorcides

A Palestinian woman wearing a hijab veil.

The deadly face of Muslim extremism
Tarek Fatah and Farzana Hassan, National Post
Published: Wednesday, December 12, 2007

The tragic death of a Mississauga, Ont., teenage girl -- allegedly at the hands of her own traditionally minded Muslim father -- has sent shock waves across the world. Canadians are justified in raising concerns as to whether this is a sign of the rise of Islamic fundamentalism in their own backyard.

Aqsa Parvez, a sprightly 16-year-old, beloved of her friends and peers at Applewood Heights Secondary School, was only trying to be herself, was only wishing for a normal adolescence amid Canada's rich cultural mosaic. Her father has now been charged with murder, and his son with obstruction, while a young life has been snuffed out -- likely in the name of honour and Islam.

Radical Muslim men consider themselves ultimately responsible for the conduct of the womenfolk. This outlook is rooted in a medieval ethos that treats women as nonpersons, unable to decide for themselves what they should wear, where they must go and what they must accomplish in life. If their conduct is seen as contravening this austere religious outlook, they are invariably subjected to abuse.

The hijab in particular has become a thorny issue among Muslim families. It has been elevated as a sort of "sixth pillar of Islam" among militant sects. Young teenage girls are often lectured over the virtues of the hijab by their family members. Once they hit puberty, compliance is deemed a non-negotiable religious requirement.

Polygamy battle continues in Canada

Polygamy
Three Canadian organizations fear that Canada will soon legalize polygamy.

The Canada Family Action Coalition (CFAC) has joined the Institute for Canadian Values and the Muslim Canadian Congress to issue a news release called "Polygamy - The Road to Fiscal, Legal, and Social Chaos." A poll conducted by Compass Research for CFAC shows that 85 percent of Canadians do not want the government to legalize polygamy.

Executive director of CFAC Brian Rushfeldt says the poll is in response to a court case in British Columbia in which two men are challenging the polygamy ban based on the fact that Canada has already legalized homosexual "marriage."

"We said this from day one. If we destroy the foundational premise of marriage as one man and one woman and open it up to any two people, which is to appease the homosexuals," he notes, "then we're going to have other groups and others forms of relationship using the same argument that the homosexuals did."

Rushfeldt believes that would make it impossible to set any parameters for marriage. "Are they going to say one man and ten women or one man and 20 women? Then the women are going to say what about one woman and 20 men?" he contends. "And so we will virtually put ourselves in a position where we cannot put a definition on marriage, and therefore marriage will no longer exist in the law."

The pro-family leader does not expect a ruling on this case until sometime in the fall.

Law & Justice: a Play about Sharia

Source: Muslim Canadian Congress
47 minutes
Westerners may find this play strange, but it works well with good-hearted Muslims who used to believe in so-called Allah's law - many of them rejected Sharia Law or at least started questioning its divinity after viewing the drama and movie. This is actually created specially for Muslim world where people are illiterate but simple, honest but ignorant and explosively emotional about Islam and Sharia. The drama is given a shape that suites their psyche, and it works.

The Tragic Illusion of an Islamic State

Mirage
By Jamie Glazov

Frontpage Interview's guest today is Tarek Fatah, host of the weekly Canadian TV show, the Muslim Chronicle, and a frequent contributor to the Toronto Star, the Globe and Mail, and the National Post. A lifelong critic of Islamic extremism, Fatah has earned the ire of Islamists. For his work and perseverance as a writer and broadcaster, despite numerous death threats and intimidation, the National Press Club of Canada awarded Fatah the 2007 Press Freedom Award. Earlier, MacLean’s magazine named Fatah as one of 50 people it described as “Canada’s most well known and respected personalities." In 2002, he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal for his work in the community.

In the aftermath of 9/11, Fatah founded the Muslim Canadian Congress, a secular Muslim organization dedicated to the separation of religion and state, opposition to Islamic extremism, and an end to what it describes as "gender apartheid" that is practised in many parts of the Muslim community. He is the author of the new book, Chasing a Mirage: The Tragic illusion of an Islamic State. He can be contacted at tarekfatah@rogers.com. Read more ...

Review of Tarek Fatah's book - "Chasing a Mirage-the Tragic Illusion of an Islamic State"

Fatah
By Dan Smith

Cabbagetown' s Tarek Fatah begins his cri de coeur by setting out his citizen of the world credentials succinctly yet with power: "I am Indian born in Pakistan; a Punjabi born in Islam; an immigrant in Canada with a Muslim consciousness, grounded in Marxist youth. I am one of Salman Rushdie's many Midnight's Children: we were snatched from the cradle of a great civilization and made permanent refugees, sent in search of an oasis that turned out to be an mirage. I am in pain, a living witness to how dreams of hope and enlightenment can be turned into a nightmare of despair and failure...

"I write as a Muslim whose ancestors were Hindu. My religion, Islam is rooted in Judaism, while my Punjabi culture is tied to that of the Sikhs. Yet I am told by Islamists that without shedding this multifaceted heritage, if not outrightly rejecting it, I cannot be a true Muslim."

And so it goes in Fatah's Chasing a Mirage: The Tragic Illusion of an Islamic State (Wiley, 410 pages, $31.95). The co-founder of the Muslim Canadian Congress and the host of Vision TV's weekly The Muslim Chronicle sums up his inclusive, holistic understanding of the Quran's teachings, in opposition to the Islamic fundamentalism, of political and religious, that he has spent most of his adult life campaigning against it.

Chasing a Mirage is dedicated to Benazir Bhutto and Daniel Pearl: "a Muslim and a Jew, victims of terrorism."
